Question RE: breastfed babies...how many oz is your baby taking while at daycare? C was taking 5 oz every 3 hours. We recently switched to a daycare center (remember my drama??) and the teacher told me yesterday that she thinks he is ready to be bumped up to 6 oz feedings. With DS1 we never fed more than 5 oz at a time. I think she is over feeding because I mentioned paced bottle feeding and she didn't know what I was talking about. So I explained it...I don't want to tell her how to do her job but isn't 6 oz per feeding a bit much? Also- I should mention that he eats 5x per day (3 bottles then 1 nursing session in the morning around 6 and at night around 7). I am overproducing still so it's not like I am pumping less than 5 oz at a time and I have quite a stash of over 1,000 oz built up, so it's not that I don't have enough. I just don't want him over eating on bottles and not nursing like the normally does. Thoughts? I think DS is an outlier but he eats 6oz bottles regularly... He eats 4 6oz bottles in the 12 hours I'm at work. (One about every 3ish hours) He does seem to be that hungry and he does stop himself when he's full it seems like...I hope we're not over feeding!

I should add that he is 14 weeks and he is breastfed, although on days I'm at work I supplement two of those bottles because I can't pump enough to keep up.

During the day at daycare he eats 3 4 oz. bottles between 7:30 and 5. DS1 never ate more than 4 ounce bottles and I'm not sure if DS2 is going to continue that way. 6 ounces is a lot.

We're also on the tiny side here. I actually had people tell me this weekend they thought DS2 was about a month old. We weighed him this morning and he's around 11 lbs 2 ounces.

I don’t have a reference for how often she would eat because I’ve only been away from her for about 4 hours at a time (I work 3-11 and she goes to bed at 7)... she did drink 5oz like once before but that’s not common.

stephne, what is paced bottle feeding? I have never heard of that before. Also, I don’t know that a baby can really over eat. Is he spitting up after each feeding? Usually, that’s a small indicator that baby may be getting too much. I asked my pediatrician at DD2’s 2 month appt because all she wants to do is eat and I thought I was over feeding her. She reassured me that it wasn’t likely. Maybe he’s going through a growth spurt? I FF so I have no idea what a “normal” amount is for BF babies. DD2 will have 8oz in the morning and then 4 6oz bottles for the rest of the day. I don’t ever remember my DD1 drinking that much even at like a year old. So I was concerned. Maybe send an extra ounce in each bottle and see if he finishes it during each feeding.

That's amazing!!!! Addressing your question, that seems a lot to me for a breastfed baby. DS1 never took more than 5oz tops at a time, even when he was older. I still have DS2 on size 0 nipples and don't plan to change them. (But I also have low supply so my milk comes out slow when he nurses and isn't forceful, so I don't want him to prefer getting milk faster out of the bottle.)

In that same vein, a lady the other day said, "oh she's so beautiful," about baby. That of course doesn't offend or bother me at all, but I just said "Thank you so much! He's actually a boy." She proceeded to go on and on for about 3 minutes, "Oh he looks just like a girl! He's so beautiful - wow he looks just like a girl!!" Like OKAY LADY keep telling me my baby boy looks just like a girl.

stephne I never did daycare but I'm pretty sure breast fed babies only ever need 4 oz bottles. Something about the composition of the mill changing to make it more filling? Sounds like she doesn't have any experience with breastfeeding.

Basically instead of laying the baby all the way back and putting the bottle in the mouth like bottoms up, the baby is supposed to be more in a sitting position and the bottle is supposed to be kept more parallel. She did give him an extra oz with each feeding today and she marked on his slip that he was much better after his feedings. I did notice when I got there to pick him up he was knocked out....like in a food coma lol. Tonight he did not seem interested in nursing. I'm willing to give it another day before I say something

Sounds like she doesn't have any experience with breastfeeding. She seems super nice and I don't want to offend her but my gut is telling me that 5 oz is plenty. I am actually meeting tomorrow night with someone that I know who decided to quit her social worker job to stay home with her kids. Hopefully this works out and we can take him out of the daycare center.

Re: small babies DS1 was small and I loved his pedi for telling me some babies have to be in the lower percentile. If all babies were 50% there wouldn’t be chart! I stressed so much about his weight and other people (mom!!) added to my stress and it was all for nothing. Every baby has their “talents”. Some eat better, sleep better, nap better, roll over sooner, sit sooner, are happier, crawl faster, eat every solid so on and so forth.... DS1 was 2% for weight but STTN super at 3 weeks and hit ever gross motor milestone super early. DS2 was 80% for weight but didn’t STTN until he was three and rolled months later, sat later etc. ajetter it took about 3 weeks for me to see real good result after being dairy and soy free. Her eating got so much better and we really improved in the weight gain department. I don’t even eat out besides jimmy johns bc even when I thought I was being in-line I wasn’t. Give it some more time. Hope she starting gaining soon even if it’s slower.

rebeccabunch when you say her eating got better, what does that mean exactly? I feel like Arden nurses really well. She’s truly a happy baby and never seems to be having any digestion issues (like excess gas or uncomfortable or anything). It really is just the spitting, eczema, and slow weight gain. She’s only gained a pound in the last 10 weeks. If I never saw a growth curve I’d assume she was just a happy petite baby and move on. Obviously I need her to gain and I would love for her to spit up less and not have the eczema, but overall the kid is just happy.

Last night I had a dream that I was having some surgery that I was awake for and they tied my tubes without my consent. I like had to watch them do it but couldn't stop them. I was SO upset even as I woke up. Maybe on my mind lately. We had really planned for DH to have his V by now but meh I'm sure he's going to make me call. Why am I dragging my feet on this? My body cannot handle another pregnancy so it should be a no brainer. We have only DTD once since I was cleared so really there's no rush.

stephne I agree, 5 is plenty. My DD1 moved to 5oz bottles around 5 mo.. Thankfully solids shortly after that helped! I would print her info on pace feeding and include it with his bottles.

👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 hi guys! We've been busy enjoying my last week at home. 😭😭😭
O is having a lot of spit up overnight again. The last two nights I slept in the rocker holding her. So. She's gaining but this is definitely not normal. And I'm hoping she'll be rolling soon so I am going to need to figure out night sleep.

stephne, I think according to kellymom, the average breastfed baby will take in about 25 oz in 24 hours (or something like that, there is a calculator on there and everything to check # of oz expected based on # of feedings per day). Paced feeding is hard for people that haven't BFed to understand, I think. My mom and dad don't really get it, so I sent a video and then they never watched it so....they think I'm not giving them enough milk and that she is always hungry....but we are making it work. DH was the one that found that video (it's also on kellymom) and he is much better at "managing" my milk when he is home with her during the day When DS went to his first day care, they were definitely over-feeding him and didn't "get" paced feeding either, until there was a center-wide weekend training on caring for BFed babies and suddenly, they understood things better! It was weird, b/c they were a big center. I would have expected there would have been other BFing moms that made the same request, so it just made me feel like a crazy person. When we switched day cares. the new provider understood things better and also was good at managing DS's feedings. If I produced a lot of milk, I probably wouldn't even care as much, I'd be all: give her all the milk!!!! But I'm one of the moms measuring out the bottles to the last oz. to try to get 12 oz per day from pumping!

The breast milk changes as the baby gets older. The calories and fat content change since they require more to get full. Whereas, formula is formula. It calorie content doesn’t change requiring more oz as the baby gets older.
