I get that. For me those lines are clear.
I was speaking to here and this group and when someone has to be told about this and that or misses something.
My comments are also about what can I do or not, what can I add or not, what is my role. I am looking within.
I am also saying that to clarify that I am not speaking to what anyone else should do or not. Not saying you are saying that. I just want to be clear.
Those are clear lines but I also take a hard line for people who vote for those people even if thatβs not their primary motivator. I think all the adjacencies to problematic folks make me think the whole thing is rotten. Yes, I don't think voting for these people for other reasons gets a person a pass. If these beliefs aren't a dealbreaker, then you just don't give a fuck about disenfranchised groups, which is not much better than actively hating them.

I agree. 2016 wasn't about how you think we should handle taxes or the military, it was about human rights. And that's evident in the number of defected Republicans.

I believe whte people fall into one of three groups: 1. Racist, with superiority complexes and a true belief that all/most people who donβt look like them are lesser than. 2. Not racist, but harboring prejudices that have been ingrained and rooted since their early years. Most of the time they can check themselves and do better than act or speak with prejudice coloring their world. 3. And the final group, the one that bothers me the most. People who say theyβre not racist and refuse to see how their prejudices impact their thoughts and actions.
I canβt do anything about Group 1. I wish them all on a boat that sinks in the ocean.
Group 3 should be able to learn, but theyβre currently incapable of self reflection and seeing that they themselves ARE a major problem with America.

I listened to a podcast talking about how people are more likely to do something terrible after seeing someone else doing something terrible and not facing any consequences for it. So I am afraid with Trump in office, things are going to be worse for a while before getting better. This. I think there is a group of white people who are relieved that it is more socially acceptable to say/do fucking awful things. They are thinking "Finally, someone is saying it." Their racism was always there, but they had to be slicker about it before. And I did not realize before Trump how large this group is. Yeah, this. Like here is this orange buttface saying this shit on national TV, it's mainstream. They found their guy and are now more comfortable speaking up and out.
And the thing I try to remember is that those people were always there. They are simply feeling more emboldened. They've been there all along, but I didn't see many of them, which speaks to my privilege of being a white woman.
And that is something that I am really trying to learn from.

My boss and I have had a few awkward race moments which sucks because he is the CEO but I think he meant well and was dumb. In another situation at work, I had a board member who really likes me say that around the world black boys are a problem and there is something inherently broken with them and the culture. I just feel like I canβt trust or give benefit of the doubt anymore. Itβs exhausting and I hate being disappointed every single time. This is why I frequently feel compelled to speak up and urge other white people to do the heavy lifting when possible. I don't mean to ever speak for POC but I also want to pick up some fucking slack because it is probably literally the least I can do. I still mess up though - often. And I am thankful for any grace received when I stumble, but honestly, I don't expect it either. Thisbitch expected us to spoon feed her the answer and then forgive her when she threw it back up in all our faces.

Group 3 describes the majority of my parent's generation. This is the majority of our generation, too. Yeah. I mean, I'm Gen X, so definitely my generation has this issue, but I think even millennials are affected. People think recognizing that they have attitudes and biases that have been shaped by white supremacy puts them in the first category of card-carrying, unabashed capital "R" racists, so they refuse to do any self examination. They know racists are awful, and they don't want to be perceived as awful, so they just live in a state of denial. The desire to avoid being seen as a racist at any cost is why white liberals can be particularly bad about this.

Sheβs who I picked on Vote 411. Weβre friends. She has a lot of black friends who genuinely love her and have traveled to raise money for her and support her and she is a policy wonk. She is the real deal. Also, her opponent wears tiaras and sashes to events.... My gosh...

It's like a half-dozen Trump wannabes all running ads right now. I read through my pamphlet this weekend to do my ballot, and there were a few candidates that had words like "make America great again" or something similar and clearly alluding to Trump. Ugh. My city is somewhat red in a blue state and I cant read the comments sections of local news articles without wanting to pull my hair out.

OMG. It's like a half-dozen Trump wannabes all running ads right now. This is my first experience in a red state and itβs just soul-crushing. I've been in GA a looooong time and by far this is the worst I've ever seen. There really is something to that emboldened by Trump thing.

Since this thread was drug up, I will say that I am glad out of this bullshit--we settled on a clear set of expectations on calling out racism on this board. This will sound trite, but I was v uncomfortable with thisbitch's behavior after her shitty statements. I was upset that she gave lip service and then came back posting about facial masks like nothing happened. I felt like beyond her racist statements and obvious gaslighting, it was disrespectful to the people she hurt to not pretend it never happened. I wanted to bring it up and not her skate by, but I was unsure if it was acceptable or would cause more pain for the people she hurt.So I just kept quiet and side-eyed from behind my computer. That won't happen again. Hold out; wasnβt it you you wanted posters not to speak on the plantation wedding thing? Am I misremembering. Because you knew LSJ in real life and it want fair because she wasnβt here to defend herself? Break down to me please the difference because Iβm legit lost right now. This is a fair point.

Well, this is a very good point. And now Iβm oissed again about that entire defense because 1. A Blaxk woman was tone policed for calling out problematic behavior 2. Here we are full circle doing the same thing again. Sap please Iβm waiting for this explanation. I had no business telling anyone they couldn't speak on it. Period.

I just don't want to prematurely shut down someone who wants to learn because I have put them in a certain group in my mind.

I definitely did before that thread. I have spoken to her since she left regarding that thread at least twice. I think I've shared that before? I don't know. But she and I have had a direct conversation about that thread and its fallout. But what does that have to do with this? I also used to really like ThisBitch and then more information came to light. Things change, people change, and others change their opinions about them. Because for a lot of people they canβt admit their friend is problematic or outright racist. The same people who canβt wont call out racist/problematic family. It goes hand in hand. See the thread on GBCN that was mentioned earlier. Her friends aren't racist!
