Hi everyone. Work has been crazy so I haven't been around as much as I would like, and as a result I also need your help. I am finishing up my government class with a unit on the prison system and was wondering if you knew of any articles/films on the topic that might work well with high school seniors. It's a pretty mature group so the resources can be more college-level. Many thanks in advance.

Blood in the Water is really good (but long-- it would be great extra credit, haha!)-- it's specifically about the Attica uprising, but a lot is still super relevant today. Heather Ann Thompson did a lot of related interviews etc for the book though, and there seem to be some clips/interviews etc that could be a fit here- www.heatherannthompson.com/media-reviews/.

Pod Save the People has done a couple of eps that you might want to check out-one on Rikers, one on Cook County, and another on a partnership program with a colleg. Note: the eps start with a breakdown of the week's news, the interview is maybe half the runtime.

The podcast Ear Hustle is about life in San Quentin. I heard about this. It is put together by the inmates, correct? Mostly, yes. The hosts are an inmate (Erlon aka E) and a prison volunteer (Nigel). But the rest is all inmates - interviews, music, editing, etc. They do not have internet access so they get postcards! It’s very interesting. It’s quite well done, I have to say. A good mix of heavy topics and light hearted ones.

There are some slightly more positive aspects that some of your kids might get into- like theater in prisons, theres a few groups that focus on doing Shakepeare's plays in prison,(theres a group at Racine Correctional in WI , for one) also dog training programs, and theres a prison in Va that rehabs racehorses, for instance that may be topical for young adults. Almost every system does some sort of volunteer work, the type and variety varies greatly -one prison I worked at made stuffed bears for police officers to hand out to scared kids... but researching that could be of interest. Im thinking of topics that might appeal to the less diehard political junkies in the crew that still need projects. Theres also been a lot recently out about prison labor, and the marketing of desirable consumer products made via prison labor.

There are one or two episodes that would not be high school-appropriate (like the one about conjugal visits), but overall it is really interesting and humanizes the prison experience. The Sporkful also has a great episode called Prison Ramen Saved My Life.

I know more about how to make prison food, including all you can do with Ramen, than I ever wished to know. Maybe I should make a Prison Cookbook
