We always did the real firearm rules for play guns too. The only way a play gun could be used to shoot each other was after verification with an adult that it was a play gun, rules about only from the waist down, eye protection, safe word to signal time to stop etc. (for nerf guns and water guns).
Dh used to teach firearm safety classes, so he takes it seriously. he also was a competitive pistol and rifle shooter, and went to Olympic trials as a teenager and young adult. So there are safely stored firearms around, and firearms are serious business for the kids starting young.
As soon as they were old enough to take a hunter safety class, they took it. That made a huge impact in their respect of guns, as there was instruction, homework, tests, taken to the range to see shooting, shooting a watermelon and talk about how if that is a body part, head etc, then there is no way to survive that with watermelon guts going everywhere, showing that just a 22 can go thru walls, etc etc. Scared straight, sort of, but also soooo much repetition of the shooting rules and responsible gun ownership, storage, eye and ear protection and to treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
