I love Liam, and would use it if wasn't completely terrible with our last name (they sound very similar so it just doesn't work). I don't think Liam Carl sounds bad.

Dramaphile I love all your name options!! I know a two year old named Declan and he’s pretty much the cutest toddler ever. Love Caleb and Felicity too.

chriskoo I think all of those name combinations flow nicely! I think that Liam and Lucas sound nice with your DD's name, if that's important to you 😊 I also like Hank as a NN for Henry.

We've added Caleb to our boy name possibilities, and might be inching away from the boy name we would have used for DD, Declan. Middle would still be Scott (family name). Girl name is still in the air, but Felicity is a top contender. MN would likely be Eugenia (MH's late mother's greek name). Our last name is super common, one syllable, so we want to choose a name that is established/old fashioned/classic-ish, but not super common or trendy. DD's name is Cec.ily Patr.icia I love both Caleb and Felicity, good choices there. Felicity is unique but not too unique that nobody would know how to pronounce it. Caleb is on our short list for boy names but DH doesn’t like how popular it is .

I feel like there are fewer good options for boy names unless you really want something out of the box, which is NMS. It took us forever to settle on Declan last time, and but we're both waffling on it now (partly because a friend had a Declan a year ago, and at least we don't currently know any Calebs).

Dramaphile I agree boy names are so hard! Caleb, Damien, Jonah, Lincoln, Isaac, and Samuel are my top contenders.

I love Jonah! Sadly MH vetoed it. Aw bummer! I vetoed a bunch of his (Tristan, Hunter, Connor), so all's fair... Our naming tastes don't intersect well on boy names, which is part of why we had a lot of trouble choosing one we like.

I shave two boys and was so glad this baby is a girl simply because name are so hard. We struggled with DS2s name.
Ds1 has my maiden name for a first name and his grandfather's middle name as his MN.
DS2 is Samuel and we chose it in part because it is easy for the Portuguese to pronounce. DS1's name is impossible for people here, so he just goes by "B" 😁

So I think I may have convinced DH to agree to Henry nn Hank! I’m so excited! He was dead set on Gregory which I also really like but I’m not sure I see myself calling a little baby ‘Greg’. I brought it up and he was like ‘we can use that name if you let me do a spaceship themed nursery’. I’m like, umm ok!

Reviving this thread to discuss nicknames. Did any of you name past children with the intent of calling them a nickname or did it happen organically? Or planning to give new baby a longer name, but introducing them with a nickname?
My DS1 does not have a first name that has a common nickname so I don’t have experience with this, but we are considering some longer names for DS2 so I’m wondering how that all would work or if anyone is willing to share their anecdotes.

mirabelle - DS's name is already a short name so no personal experience but I think you could either tell people you want to use the nickname or just start using it all the time. I know I've seen friends post birth announcements on FB before as FirstName "Nickname" MiddleName LastName which to me immediately shows intended use of the nickname. If you wanted something more formal you could do something like that (whether FB, emails, texts, printed announcements, etc).

We are also debating on doing a "go by middle name" kind of thing too.

With ds1 we had no intentions of nicknames, but his name is long and difficult to pronounce for the Portuguese, so we nicknames him the first letter of his name "B", which makes it easier for everyone.
DS2 we gave a name with the intent of using the nickname, but we wanted him to be able to choose later to go by something else, as his nickname is kind of childish.
This baby will be Jane Lourdes and we will call her Lulu which is a Portuguese nickname for Lourdes. It has sentimental connotations for my family.
So I guess I run the full gamut. 😂

DD is Ella, and goes by Ella. We occasionally call her Elle. I hate “Ellie”, and it doesn’t suit her at all so I’m happy that no one has ever tried to call her that.
DS will be Henry, and we plan on sometimes calling him Hank. I’ll be laid back about whether other people call him Henry or Hank. Whatever sticks.

DD is Eliza (not Elizabeth like many people think) and we call her Eliza, Liza, or Liza bean. I think you can pick a nickname to use and help people kind of catch on by using it a lot, but sometimes other nicknames can just kind of organically come about (like I never thought my daughter would be called Liza bean but almost everyone calls her that haha)

My DS's name doesn't really have a nickname. But I often call him Bud, and Bubs when he was younger, which has nothing to do with his name! I think anyway you want to incorporate a nickname, or not, is fine! If you feel strongly about wanting to use the nickname, I like Nymeria 's idea of including the nickname on the birth announcement! Otherwise, people will pick up on whatever name you use on a daily basis, and how you introduce your LO, and will likely follow suit. Kids can always shy away from using a nickname as they get older too and that's no big deal. I have two cousins, one male one female, who both went by the more "kiddish" nicknames for their names when growing up. As they got older they preferred their full name and everyone has adjusted to using that just fine!

My daughter is Cecily, and we sometimes call her "Ces" for short, but have discouraged the use of "Cessie" or "Cici." She went through a phase where she called herself Cessie because L's are hard and it was cute, but has reverted back to her full name now. We are a family that uses a lot of silly nicknames, so she often is called Nugget or Boo or Stinkyface. #2 will likely also have a name that doesn't have any obvious nicknames.
My BFF's son is named William and they have called him Liam since birth and nobody has really batted an eye at it. I think if you introduce the baby as whatever you want them called, people tend to follow suit. If you want to use it in the birth announcement, I would do something like, "Introducing our new arrival Bobby!" Robert James Smith, birthdate etc underneath it.

I thiiiiink we might be kinda settled on names!! 😃
We were struggling with a boy name but I think I'm feeling settled with what was originally my second choice.
I basically told MH in the beginning of this pregnancy what I was already planning to use for a girl and he never protested, so I just need to make sure he doesn't secretly hate it!

We haven't made any progress on names. It was a struggle to come up with DD's name and since we are having another girl I don't know what we are going to do. This child may not have a name for a few days after she's born. 🤦🏾♀️

teambrink we haven't talked about names at all either and are really going to struggle with girls names. DH didn't like any girl names I suggested a few months ago and we haven't talked about it since. We almost named DD Lily (I love Liliana) but not sure if that will still be in the running. Our last name has a few "L"s in it so I don't know if it sounds weird or not. Hopefully we'll have at least one girl name before he/she is born!

We are at a stalemate with names also. I’m worn out from looking at the lists day in and day out. Every type of list. I’m waiting to wake up and just know it’s the “one.”

I'm about 90% sure we are going with our old boy name. Nothing else is clicking for us. And nothing feels "right". Not many people are fans but whatever. Looks like baby boy will be Len.non Mar.s. 🤷♀️ I may add a second middle name to help break it up and add flow. We might use a family name before said middle name.

I'm wondering if I need to let up on my quest for another Irish name. MH is not Irish at all and I got my Irish name with DS1, so maybe it's time to broaden my horizons a bit. It certainly narrows down our options trying to find an Irish name MH will actually go for (he doesn't like anything "too Irish").
Not to mention if we use the middle name I think we will, my current Irish front runner would result in DS1 and DS2 having the exact same initials first, middle, and last. I have people telling me it's not a big deal but I'm not sure I love the idea of them matching all letters.
MH has suggested William for both boys now and I keep shooting it down, but I feel like I may like it. I have an uncle William so I keep saying no to the name, but he goes by Bill and I think I'd want to use Will for a nickname. I'm no where near saying ok to it, but I feel like I may need to change up my approach a bit if we're ever going to find something.
ETA: I think I'd be sold on William nickname Liam, but I already have a first cousin Liam and we see my first cousins pretty regularly.
