Sign I saw outside a business today (like on their own marquee): “Be grateful we aren’t getting all the government we’re paying for” One of the most successful instances of using a single phrase to talk out of both sides of your mouth I've ever seen. I know. I saw it as I was turning (onto a main road, so couldn’t stop) and I literally puzzled over it the entire 40 minutes home because it can so easily go either way. It’s in an area that definitely went for Clinton, but was kind of a tossup in our primary last month. Not Trump fans though, in the presidential primary Kasich won those areas among Republicans.

Interview with Zuckerberg. We desperately need regulation in the social media space, because leadership is obviously not motivated to deal with it, refuses to acknowledge or address the damage they are doing. Hmm, hmm. I have a lot of thoughts to sort through about Zuckerberg, Zeynep's accusations, the world wide web and social media at large, globalization, colonialism, politicization, real life and virtual lives. Good interview. I'm scheduling two days on my hypothetical syllabus.

I know (at least, I'm very sure of because of your political involvement) you know this has been going on for decades. What do you want to discuss about this recent incident? (I think this probably sounds in text not half as friendly as it's meant) I was just wondering if it had been discussed at all. I couldn't remember seeing it, but wasn't sure if I'd missed it on this or the old thread. Anyhow: 30,000 Palestinians gathered on the Gaza border to protest not being allowed to return to the homelands they have been dispossessed of. The IDF fired upon crowds, injuring hundreds and killing 17. There are disputes over whether the people killed were armed. IDF initially claimed they were using snipers only to take out violent protesters, but deleted the tweet after evidence put forward that some of the people were not armed and at least one was claimed not to be a protester at all. I have a lot of feelings about this, both how it's playing out on the ground and how it's playing out in the media. It's interesting the way the protests have been portrayed as violent and driven by Hamas on one side, and on the others as entirely innocent. The truth is almost somewhere in between: most of the protesters have been peaceful. Some of the ones killed were not violent. Using live rounds on protesters is appalling. I am irritated by the constant invocation of Hamas as a means to delegitimize the protest, while completely erasing the reasons behind the protest, which mostly includes the fact that Palestinians in Gaza are basically being held in an open air prison with limited access to food, water, fuel, medicine, and other basic necessities. I'm bothered as usual by the "this has been going on for decades" shoulder shrugging. This is a new incident, with new circumstances and new actions to pick apart. We've got plenty of problems here that have been going on for decades, even centuries, but that doesn't make them any less worthy of critical examination. Another article recapping more clearly here. Thank you for going more into depth. I'm happy to discuss more in detail. But I'd like to clarify that I wasn't shoulder-shrugging. I was asking for you to expand more on what details you wanted to discuss about it. In the article you first posted what surprised me the most was the implications about Egypt's response. I'll go read the second article.

I think because last week was quiet and yesterday was a holiday, a lot of people are doing other stuff. I'm burnt out. The Sinclair stuff has me really, really down. It's getting harder to be proud of my degree in journalism when others who hold the same degree are shit human beings.

I was asking for you to expand more on what details you wanted to discuss about it. In the article you first posted what surprised me the most was the implications about Egypt's response. I'll go read the second article. Egypt joined Israel in blockading Gaza as a response to Hamas (backed by Iran) taking over control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. Saudi Arabia has also strengthened ties w/ Israel over concerns about Iran. When it comes to Hamas/Palestinians in Gaza, Egypt and Israel move more or less in lockstep. Welp, I got lost and muddled somewhere along the Morsi accusations, so I need to get caught up. Later, though, because I'm about to head out the door. About the media presentation of the recent protest atrocities, I'll take your word for it. I don't trust Israeli or Hamas claims repesented in either article because of their histories. Israel has no problem commiting atrocities against innocent people and pointing fingers and passing blame. Hamas makes wildly unbelievable accusations against the IDF such as their training a dolphin to spy on Hamas. Yes, there definitely should be an investigation by the UN and human rights groups. That violence was escalated by Israelis during this time is especially deplorable given the current holiday, and I hate that that conscience is unlikely to affect them in the event of further protests Friday. I hope this does not escalate further.

A 17-year-old, who'd been in of MS-13 since he was 12 and was trying to get out, helped law enforcement by giving them inside information on MS-13. He thought they would help him. Instead, ICE picked him up, put him in detention with other MS-13 members, and plans to deport him back to El Salvador, where he is a known informant and will almost certainly be murdered on arrival. Fucking appalling. And this is exactly why sanctuary laws are actually important in aiding law enforcement. Because who would ever come forward and help law enforcement from the inside if they knew this was the end that was waiting for them?

Driving back from MA to DC today. We left at 430am. Between the snow and traffic, we are still on the road at 5pm.

Continuing the Roger Stone saga... HA, that is the exact opposite of what matters in a court of law. From my perspective, as a corporate compliance officer, it does not matter at all what you did, it only matters what you can prove via contemporaneous documentation.

I've always looked at sanctuary laws through the lense of violence against women (i.e., not reporting abuse, rape, etc.) but this is just another case of how our "prolife" friends ignore the humanity of people who don't look like them.

If it’s not charted it didn’t happen. Or at least that’s what was drilled into our heads at orientation.

I am so tired, I was wondering what politics had to do with my favorite shopping site. I'm glad she's stepping down. It gives someone with a clean record a chance to run.

You know MS-13 will use this as an example for anyone who even considers it! And this is why immigrant communities don’t trust law enforcement, which will lead to bigger issues in the community. They won’t report abuse, theft, drug sales, trafficking bullying of businesses, etc. for fear they too would be deported or held until they can be proved a citizen. It just hurts everyone!

Burnt out. House planning and trying to contact the last vendor so we can move to the actual complete contract phase. Procrastinating at work. Trying to figure out how to manipulate our pay so that the one card that reports mid-statement to the bureaus is no longer reporting a 95% utilization ratio, but instead, a more accurate representation of what we spend per month

Is anyone else seeing their local “Action” group really go downhill? Mine has been bad about posting fake or sensationalist news for a while and I’m about to quit. It’s just so frustrating- it’s not like there aren’t plenty of legitimate things to complain about this administration over, you don’t need to turn to this.

Trump is looking for further attacks on Amazon. Non-snarky question-is this legal? Semi-snarky question- wtf will happen when this drives Amazon to put their new HQ in say, Toronto?

One anchor who works for Sinclair Broadcast Group shared a snippet of his contract: Basically they can't fight back because not only will they lose their jobs, but they'll be forced to pay Sinclair damages on their way out. That is effed up. Is this allowed because the anchors sign multi-year contracts? I was trying to figure out how this could be possible because it sounds like a terrible employment agreement.

The thing that kills me about him bitching about Amazon not paying enough in taxes is him signing the fucking tax bill that gave Amazon how many millions in tax breaks.
