So cell phone that isn't a gun and having your back to the police means you deserve to be shot repeatedly if you're a black man. That poor man and his poor family. There is a picture of him with his kids floating around that breaks my heart. This has happened so many times, though, and the cops are always given a pass. I know. I hope I'm wrong, but I have no faith there will be consequences to the murderers in this case either.

Holy shit to being arrested three times for assaulting her ex and his girlfriend. And they are definitely over policing. "Assume Goodness" Barf. Barf is right.

Jenny Craig has decided to stop advertising with Laura Ingraham.
I love that companies are still ending business with her show.

So you guys are saying I can't write a book about this place?
Damn.
I have no interest in writing a book based on any forum I've been on, in case that's not clear.

I don't like the way they passed the bill at all, but, honestly, and no doubt UO, I think a lot of teachers/government employees really may want to figure out how to deal with fixed contribution retirement accounts and not being able to dump tons of days of unused vacation into a defined benefits plan moving forward. Moving new hires to a fixed contribution plan does not really make me want to take up arms. Most teachers do not pay into SS but rather into a pension fund, as far as I know. What, again IMO, is awful is when the pension plan is not appropriately funded. An actuarial analysis request is reasonable, I think - but, the results may not be what either side wants. Can attest that most teachers do not pay into SS, are not eligible to collect SS when they hit retirement age unless they've paid in. Same goes for many federal employees, which is why state/federal pensions are important to keep well-funded. My parents are both recently retired teacher/federal employees. My mom worked a job when she was younger that paid into SS and I think she can collect a small, but definitely not livable amount, and my dad is starting a new FT job to build up his SS so he can collect SS eventually. Both have concerns about the limited COLAs and increasing health insurance costs for their pensions. I did not know that most public employees don’t pay into SS. We do along with mandatory contributions to the pension fund. Those with pensions should be able to do both

If the system isn’t integrated with Ss, then the pension program will exist; if they aren’t, then you’ll get more access to SS, 403b and 457 programs. I plan minimally for age 95 as a rule, pensions help a lot. A LOT. As pensions are going by the wayside, I do think we will start to see more “private” pensions, ie people building their own pension.

Both have concerns about the limited COLAs and increasing health insurance costs for their pensions. My own pension plan (which recently froze defined benefits portion and added on a defined contribution pool) does not have a COLA. That's a pretty rare bird in many industries. My last Fidelity review posited I'd live to 96 (and I'm no spring chicken now) and the rep was talking about maybe we should push it up. The increasing life span is really playing hob with historic actuarial projections for pension plans. A lot of these traditional pension plans truly, with no malice inherent by the employers or designers, are not viable in the long run anymore. Also, too many plans (private or public) are not even close to be fully funded. And, yes, health insurance is a major issue for all, regardless of age, but for retirement planning is often underestimated. I was fortunate enough to be able to enroll in a group LTC plan many years ago at my employer, and will continue to have access after retirement. Even at the group rate, and starting young, I'm looking at over $300/month for decent, if not outstanding, coverage. And, that's incredibly better than if I started shopping at 65. And, honestly, can't even be too mad at the LTC underwriters - this was a heck of a product to try and underwrite, and pretty much everyone estimated wrongly. I can attest to the rarity of COLAs. I've worked as a pension actuary for over 10 years on private sector and multiemployer plans and never encountered a plan with one.

As pensions are going by the wayside, I do think we will start to see more “private” pensions, ie people building their own pension. I think there's certainly a trend that direction. I think it will swing the opposite way (I hope!?) as people see a new generation of retirees who do not have the assets to support the income they will need in retirement. The overwhelming evidence is just that people do not save enough money. I hope we will come up with some sort of public (federal or state) defined benefit/defined contribution system that allows for the portability of a defined contribution arrangement with some guaranteed income mechanisms of a defined benefit plan. I have specifics on how I think it should work, but broadly I just hope we get there. The current system has some kinks to work out.

In terms of health care, I'm locked into whatever I have upon retiring, per my union, which is typical of NYS teachers (*I assume is typical, I've been in three districts across the state and it's always been the case).

cakewench, I feel your pain. An acquaintance shared an anti-gun legislation post and I fact-checked, then a friend of hers went all "This is the first step to a POLICE STATE and they all want a NEW WORLD ORDER!!" At the words "new world order" or "deep state" I disengage from FB conversations because at that point I know this is a person who cannot be reasoned with.

There’s a pretty good fact check in thread. Obama’s started a commission to end human trafficking in 2012 and Trump has kept it going. Which is actually a good thing Trump has done. Buuuut I guarantee folks who applaud Trump for it will never recognize Obama’s started it. This is trying to have a good faith argument about policy with people who believe that some Reddit poster is a high-level administration official giving them inside dirt on how Trump is secretly locking up Hollywood stars and directors extra-judicially. They are the people who think Hillary is hiding a monitoring ankle bracelet.
