I think we may start our tomato seeds today. Frost date is April 16th so I guess it’s about time. I get WAY too excited about vegetable gardening 🌱

We have plans to start some seeds tomorrow too! Today has been a lazy day because it has been pouring rain all day.
Tomorrow we drop the boys off at our sitters house and we have plans for lunch with friends in Lisbon.
I think dinner tonight will be pizza from the neighbors. I do that feel like cooking and MH is still a little sick.

We planted a few seed pods last week and they are the cutest little seedlings this weekend. SO is gone for a week or so, so I was unable to get the compost and dirt for our garden boxes.
I had great intentions of going to some fun things around the city today but instead I've been relaxing and doing a much needed cleaning of the house. Tomorrow we will try driving to the gardens for pics and then go to my moms. Gorgeous weather this weekend!

getdownpleaseI'm curious about your garden set up since you mentioned living in the SE. Are you just doing tomatoes? What kinds? I've never done tomatoes but we have seeds for cherry and yellow pear tomatoes. Im curious how they will do. I'll need something to hold them up, right?!

I have zero talent for keeping plants alive. MH built a garden bed for our neighbor a few years ago and in exchange she provides us with fresh veggies all summer, but she's moving away this fall so I'm not sure she'll bother planting this year.
Not much going on this weekend. I was trying to think of something to do and came up with nothing so I've spent the morning playing with DS while MH works on our new tile shower. DS is napping now so I'm just chilling on the couch. I'd love to take a nice walk bit it's a bit chilly and the wind from the storm is still hanging around. I do need to at least take the dog out. It would be easier to do while DS is sleeping but I have no motivation right now.

We're cleaning. Our niece is spending the night so we're trying to get the house presentable.
I'm having like just general achiness in my pelvic floor. Not cramps though. I can't remember if this is part of being pregnant (or when it started) or if I'm just gassy or need to use the bathroom.
I need to vacuum but it aches lol

Our house is a disaster. Should be cleaning but this weekend has been crazy and I just got DD down for a nap so I’m going to nap too. Priorities right?
Yesterday I watched some friends’ 1 and 3 year olds while they went to a wedding. DH chose the same moment to invite 3 of his guy friends over, all of whom slept over at our place, including the wedding goers and kids. Morning was crazy, once everyone left we had to go help my brother move.
So tired, so ready for a nap!

pixiepink24 We have two 4x8 raised beds. The plan is for one to be Brussels sprouts (already in the ground, may give up on those), onions, and arugula; and the other will be sugar snap peas on a trellis, basil, and tomatoes. I’ve never started tomatoes from seed, but they do very well in the SE as long as they get lots of sun! Tomato cages are a good idea. We’re trying 4 different heirloom varieties his year, so we’ll see...

Oh, and pixiepink24, did you say you were composting? I’m trying it for this first time this year, DH got us a bin for Christmas. Not sure how to incorporate it into the existing soil, guess I’ll just dump some in there once the orange peels and stuff disappear...? 😂

getdownpleaseWe have two 8x4 raised boxes too!! SO made them last year but that was my first time doing a real garden. We don't do compost at our house (though I should), but our county has free compost and mulch near the landfill. It worked well for us last year. I start most of mine as seeds. I too am trying out Brussels and they've poked out of the pods already. I'm excited!

It’s my dad’s bday so we’re making him banana bread. Currently trying the ripen-bananas-in-the-oven-until-the-skin-is-black trick...anyone ever tried this? I’m skeptical 😂

getdownplease, sorry no knowledge on that banana trick. They are my arch-nemesis so i don't F with bananas. Happy birthday to your dad! I do have a compost bin. We started over winter, so it is slow going right now, and it needs more carbon because I keep adding kitchen scraps. I highly recommend getting a compost accelerator. You can get them on Amazon or at some garden centers. You just put all your compost materials in the bin and water it with the accelerator and it automatically adds a bunch of bacteria. Things will get good when it warms up too. Oh and keep it in a location close enough that you'll remember to fill it, but not too close in case it gets a little gross like mine and you don't want to smell it. lol.

I just purged the bathroom closet. There were so many almost empties or products we didn't like/don't use. There's room for a baby tub in there now. I still have to do the bathroom cabinets but that's a chore for another day.
I feel like there's so much to do before September.

I had a neighbor in my old apartment complex that was really into urban farming and composting. They actually were able to keep their compost in their closet in a bin with no smell what so ever! They did a little class for the neighborhood teaching about it. I remember they had red wiggler worms to help break everything down. They also used some news paper and paper egg cartons and such. It was impressive.

I'm excited to get our garden started again, just waiting for the last frost. I have two raised beds we put in last year and we're planning on adding a third. Last year we did kale, tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, onions, potatoes, poblanos, pickling cucumbers and pumpkins. I attempted a late planting of peas and green beans and they got killed by an early frost. I want to add more varieties of peppers, start my beans and peas earlier and try some new varieties of seeds. I am going to try growing potatoes in reusable grocery bags, apparently lots of people do it successfully.

We did them in my raised bed last year and I was surprised they grew so well in pretty shallow soil. I started with a bag of old potatoes that had started growing tentacles, and then you cut them into chunks with two eyes each and sit them out for a couple of days so the cut edges dry out. Then you plan them in a furrow and cover with like an inch of soil and keep adding soil as the leaves come up. The bags should allow for even more space to grow
