DS1 and I planted our first set of indoor seedlings as we are in the 8-10 week range from our last frost date in Zone 6b!!!
All seeds are from Baker Creek (rareseeds.com) - Thai Red Chili Pepper - Lightening Mix Habanero - Ajvarski Sweet Red Pepper - Striped Pandora Eggplant
-Rosemary -Marjoram -Broad Leaf Sage -Emily Basil -Wild Zatar Oregano
We used peat seedling trays we got at Lowes so we can direct plant into the ground with less small hand damage (DS is 3). We used organic seedling starter mix.
MH rigged up a grow light (42" LED) in our boiler room which hovers between 68-70 degrees. Our regular house is between 58 and 62 so I didn't think it would be warm enough for germination. It legit looks so sketchy in there. Between the brewing set up in the garage and the boiler room grow station we look like something out of Breaking Bad.
What is everyone else up do?

We have seeds to start basil, broccoli, sunflowers and chives. We will strat these this week.
We already have strawberries, parsley, cilantro, pitanga (type of kumquat) growing outside already.
Still searching for jalapeno/habanero/chili pepper seeds too.

Also I highly recommend tweezers for planting in those tiny cells. I don't know how big I thought these seeds would be, but my sausage fingers were zero help.

I started tomatoes and cucumbers yesterday using the same peat trays for the reasons yoginikiki mentioned. Ds will be 3 in may and was super serious about counting the correct number of seeds for each little pod. I haven't decided if I'm going to start anything else from seed yet. I've been using the Audubon Native Plants Database to research flowers that will attract birds and butterflies in my area. The goldfinches loved the sunflowers last year but it will be more fun to have a greater variety of wildflowers in that section of garden. I'll probably just start them outside and take a survival of the fittest approach.

We've started lettuce, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and snow peas inside. We used big egg cartons. They seem to be doing well except we're a little worried about them molding. H was really excited to plant some of our starters this weekend and they promptly died when the temp dropped. Our last frost date was January 29, but we got an unexpected cold front. Luckily, we kept most everything inside.
We have strawberries outside already and the poor edamame that H planted. Hopefully it can be salvaged.

I didn't realize I should be starting so early. Any time I've ever started seedlings, they are massive and end up dying before I can plant them outside.

I only started things that require 8-10 weeks indoors prior to hardening off. I wont start tomatoes for my zone until mid march probably.

I just sterilized my tray today so we'll be putting seeds down for some of the plants. I got some no damp-off starter and then will transfer them to larger containers before final planting.
Tomatoes: Paul Robeson and Dark Galaxy varieties Delicata Squash Jalapenos Kale Spanish Mammoth Peppers My pollinators/for the porch pots: Bee balm, hyssop, and marigold
I have some other seeds that I will direct sow in April. Soooo excited!

I just started some green beans indoors to be planted in the garden come may. Still early, but looking for good, early harvests! Indoor aquaponics green beans just sprouted it's first green bean and I'm ecstatic!

Literally 48 hours after planting a cucumber sprouted! Of course I read after planting those are better as direct-sow, so we'll see.

If you transfer them early (before they become root bound ) they will be fine! Apparently they do well in 5 gallon buckets (like Home Depot ones) filled with soil if you dont think you can harden and transfer outside before they become root bound.

Oh, and I picked up a potted parsley for my herb garden. My chickens kindly reminded me that I will need to protect it from them, as they find it delicious. 🤦🏼♀️ Attachment Deleted

They can be frozen whole and then tossed into chili and stews all winter long!

OH no!!! Did anything make it out? We're expecting a nor'easter tonight into tomorrow Probably not. It toppled over and MH scooped up what he could, so we’ll see. This happened last year so I put it in a different spot this year and weighed it down, but we had some pretty big gusts this morning. I think what this tells me is I need a real glass greenhouse. 😉
