I have some family members who go to church frequently and believe in this type of husband/wife dynamic. In a respectful, functional, and traditional setting it can work. But, throw in a possible abusive situation or a non-traditional relationship, and it gets harder to make it work. If you have a same sex couple, how do you determine which person is the decison maker? If the decision maker is not considering the other's needs, how do they proceed? In most of the churches that are insistent a woman must submit to her husband, there generally isn't an acceptance of same-sex marriage. These are typically aggressively regressive churches. That's true for my family member's church definitely. I am pretty open when it comes to how and what people worship, but I have to ignore a lot of what comes out of this family member's mouth (and keep my kids away from any "sermons").

When the topic of religion comes up - specifically Christianity and the judgement/legalism/abuse it can perpetuate, I'm reminded of the following:
"I like your Christ, I don't like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - Mahatma Gandhi.
That basically sums up my feelings on today's church.

I'm so sorry about all these stories of abusive churches / pastors. Unfortunately, religion is a very easy method of manipulating and controlling people. There are lots of religious organizations working against this kind of abuse, though, and also many books on the subject of abusive churches and how to recognize them or find suitable therapists once you're out of them. It needs to become a topic that can be openly discussed in church settings, though, and not completely taboo. Just because John Doe or Jane Smith come to church every Sunday and volunteer all the time does not mean they can't also be physically or psychologically abusing their partner or children.
