Lurker coming out of the woodwork here... My 8 month old DS has been EBF, but for the last month (since he got teeth) I've had excruciating nipple pain every time he feeds. I never had this problem with my DD, so I'm at a loss of what to do. Lanolin hasn't worked for me, and using an ice pack before I nursed made him refuse the breast. His latch is nice and wide so I don't think that's the issue. I tried using a nipple shield and all he would do is chew on it, which obviously didn't help. Somebody please tell me there's a magic potion to fix this! Otherwise that magic potion may need to be formula

Any chance you’re pregnant?

Any chance you’re pregnant? I took a dollar store test a few weeks ago and it was negative - I'll get a better one and test again!

are you having shooting pains in your breasts as well? that can be a sign of thrush. although you can still have thrush just on your nipple without it being in your milk ducts. you can try an OTC antifungal cream 2x a day and see if it helps at all.
have you tried different positions? side-lying? LO on your lap, facing you? semi-reclined? if the pain improves in certain positions it is probably sloppy latch. IME kids have an awkward latch for a week or so after they get new teeth and they kind of have to re-learn how to latch.

Do you have any cracking, blebs, or blisters? They might be teeny tiny.

I tried a football hold, and while painful it wasn't as bad as my normal cross body setup.
I don't see anything wrong with my nipple, but with the dry winter weather it's possible that there's a crack and I just can't see it. Is that something nipple butter would help with? Or is that just something I need to give it time to heal?

I am trying to remember what exactly I did when it happened to me, but I think I ended up dipping my nipples in some warm salt water after feedings and I think that felt nice and helped. I usually get BFing advice from Kellymom, and think that was one of the suggestions.
