**TMI Warning**
I found out yesterday I have a chunk of something, probably retained placenta, in my ute. Good times. I have to take cytotec to try and avoid a D&C. She gave me a script for percoset for pain but I'm hoping I can just get through with heavy doses of ibuprofen so I can keep BFing.
I did have cytotec for my first loss, but my recollection is it did absolutely nothing except cause very mild cramps and I ended up with other interventions.
Did anyone have any other experiences with it? I know it's used a lot for MCs.
And a little vent: I'm finding this out 4.5 months after my c-section? I complained to my OB about bleeding a lot longer than it seemed like I should have and they brushed it off. Also how do you miss a chunk of placenta? What kind of tomfoolery went on? Will I find a pair of gloves, a half-eaten sandwich and the doctor's car keys in there too? Honestly.

enchanted it was actually my RE who found it. The OB office was done with me at 8 weeks PP. They didn’t do an ultrasound or anything.

bootsorhearts1 I took cytotec with my first loss and it did nothing for me. I still ended up with a D&C a week later. WTF to your OB, by the way! Glad you're RE found it and hopefully it can be resolved quickly. Also, congrats on your newest LO.

Neither of my kids came out that way.

W.T.F.
I'm shocked at your OBGYN simply dismissing your concerns about heavy bleeding. That's absurd. I assume she's aware of the remaining tissue now. What did she say?
I have no advice. Just wanted to say WTF and give you a {hug}.

When does your OB want you to start taking it?

mattsgirl2004, I take it tomorrow morning and then take another dose in 12 hours if it doesn't work. So I guess it will be a rough weekend! We have some extra help for the kiddos so it's not all on DH. What should I expect for pain levels? Will heavy doses of ibuprofen cut it? I took that after my c sections and it was plenty so I'm assuming so.

I stumbled on this thread lurking around and figured I'd answer. I used cytotec successfully after a loss. My OB gave me 800mg ibuprofen as well as an anti-nausea med since it's not totally uncommon to get nauseated from the process/meds. I never felt nauseous, but I have no idea if that was from the meds or not, and my cramps never really got that painful. I'm sorry you got this far and I'm glad your RE took this seriously. I wish you luck with this process and will give more details below if you're interested in how using the meds went for me. I hope this works for you so you can avoid any procedures.
**TW - details of how it went**
I inserted the first dose on a Friday night and the second the following morning. I had light cramps and light bleeding over the weekend, but it didn't seem like it was doing much so my OB called in 2 more doses. Bleeding picked up Monday, but I still used the third round that night, and the fourth on Tuesday (can't remember if I did it in the morning before work or waiting until night time again). Wednesday the cramps finally picked up and at one point almost felt like they were coming in waves, shortly thereafter I passed tissue while at work.
Cramps lingered for another day and the bleeding tapered down to spotting by the weekend, which lasted another week.

bootsorhearts1 I only needed ibruprofen when I took the cytotec (I only need/use ibruprofen after my csections as well). After I inserted my first dose of cytotec, I had a little bit of spotting and nothing more. After the second dose 12 hours later, I got a little crampy and had a little more bleeding. It wasn't until after my third dose that the bleeding picked up and so did the cramps. It was like a heavy period. This lasted until my following ultrasound the next week where I was told that after all of that, I still needed a D&C because I had not passed all of the "tissue." ETA: I hope it does the trick for you so you can just be done with it all! Glad that you have help with your kids too.

Nymeria, mattsgirl2004, thank you that helps! She only prescribed me 2 doses, I'm wondering if it shouldn't have been 4 based on what you guys are saying. Hmm. We'll see how it goes.

**lurking** I took cytotec for my first loss as well. It took me 3 doses to get things moving beyond spotting. The cramping wasn't too terrible until the last half hour before I passed the sac, and then I was at a 10 for sure - I remember begging hubby to call an ambulance or take me to the hospital to get some pain meds. Luckily he convinced me to give it a little more time because as soon as everything had passed my pain was nearly gone again (at least until clots started settling against my cervix the next day, but that's another story). I'm not sure how it would go with the placenta, but for me the only truly solid thing I passed was the sac. Most everything else was just largish clots of congealed blood, between the size of a nickel and the size of a Canadian loonie. I did wind up sitting on the toilet for about a half hour straight at one point because they kept coming. I also had some diarrhea with it, but I normally have some loose stools with my period so I didn't think much of it. Good luck to you. Hopefully it works for you and you can avoid surgery.

Been thinking about you today. Hopefully you're not too uncomfortable and the cytotec is doing what it's supposed to do.

I'm late to this thread but geez Boots I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I hope at this point it is all cleared up. After my third loss, when we did all the testing, my RE found I had a bunch of stuff leftover. It was probably from my second loss because I remember the OB seeing it in the final U/S and saying basically no biggie it'll work itself out. I didn't do cytotec but had a hysteroscopy. I don't know what the reason for that vs. cytotec but it did the trick of cleaning everything up.
