I had bookmarked it to listen and finally did today. Sooooooo good.
F the Dunbars, man. Mostly the current family who won't talk to her anymore. I get the original mom taking the 4 year old. I'd probably be in denial too if that happened to one of my babies.

I cannot believe how money essentially bought them this child. I am glad DNA would provide a check and balance for this in today's world.

The slander of the real mom in this story was just staggering to me.

Yeah. Pretty much a seemingly respectable family decided this was their son and boom. He was.
And yes, it was awful how easy it was to malign the mom Julia. It's clear that poverty was her only actual problem.

The whole story broke my heart on so many levels. Two mothers lost their sons. And poor Bobby/Bruce.
What about the story he invented of the second boy who fell off the wagon? Wow.

I just listened to this tonight- and what a shame for both mothers. I am glad they were able to get the DNA test to know the truth. It sucks that her family is being so shitty.

Why in the world would the family not want to know the results of the test? I can’t fathom this. And enough to be really pissed about it.

I just listened today. It’s hard to fathom how anyone could even think that boy was Bobby. Bobby goes missing in an alligator swamp but you think that he was actually kidnapped by a piano repairman? And said repairman and Bruce’s Mom have identical stories of how he was taking care of the boy while she couldn’t? It’s awful. And I for sure think that Bobby’s Mom knew the whole time which is why she has issues.

Finally got a chance to listen, but what a compelling story!
I love the three family histories regarding the same story. Oral history is just fascinating to me.
And I know if anything happened to one of my children I'd be devastated. I can't imagine taking the child of another woman and making her go through that too.

Did anyone else listen to the Switched at Birth episode? I did not understand the parents choices in that one. I really tried to, but there is just no way I would just let that shit slide.

Parts of their childhood they were even hinted at being adopted or compared to the other family and it was never really acknowledged until they were older. It’s such a strange story. Tagging earlybird for deets

I just listened to switched at birth and that was a fascinating listen.
I know times were different but not speaking up because your husband didn't want to embarrass the doctor? That's upsurd. I also really hated the "god's will" portion I whole heartedly agreed with the mother that did not know saying god's will would have been to do the right thing.

I heard most of this episode on the radio while driving, it was really fascinating! And sad that Bobby's family is so adamantly against her research and wanting to find the truth. I don't understand wanting to be willfully ignorant when there's a possibility to find out the truth about your family history. But I haven't been in their shoes, so i don't know what I would do. Definitely going to download Switched At Birth and listen!

I listened to the Bobby Dunbar episode last week. It really was a great story. I'm so glad that Margaret kept seeking the truth once she knew how much pain the other two families had experienced. I can't even begin to understand why the rest of the family is mad at her, but they shouldn't be.

At I forgot about that Switched at Birth episode. I listed to that sometime last year. Crazy story. I couldn't identify with the creepy mom who kept dropping weird hints for years but never saying the truth. www.thisamericanlife.org/360/switched-at-birth
