We are team green, due in July. We have a list but neither of us love anything.
Our list: Desmond Griffin Dean
Dean is my favorite. It was my grandma's middle name and my great grandma's first name (well part of it).
MH is meh on it. And as terrible as this will sound, it's my BILs middle name and I am in no way trying to name my child after him.
Desmond is MHs favorite. No significance behind it, he just likes it. It's just okay to me.
Traditional names like John are NMS. Nothing trendy or too popular (Dean is a bit more popular than I prefer, its in the 200s on the SSA).
If you got through all of this, you're awesome. Thanks in advance!
Edit: To remove Cohen from my list. I had no idea about the history of the name.

I love Dean! H vetoed it for this baby. Boo!
Griffin is also a good one.
FWIW, my oldest’s name is my brothers middle name. And my brother doesn’t think his nephew is named after him.

Love Desmond - it was on our short list for DS.

I like them all. Desmond is probably my least favorite of i we’re ranking but I still like it. I’m smiling because your picture is a Dean (I’m a supernatural fan). That sucks it’s your BILs middle but if it doesn’t bother you I’d say no big deal, go for it.

I'm 100% behind Dean! Handsome name! I imagine if family all knows the various family members the name was inspired by, it wouldn't be a big deal that it's BIL's MN.
I much prefer Cohen and Griffin to Desmond. Griffin feels trendy to me but I might be wrong.

Not totally true, but it helps. 🤷♀️

We're not close and don't see them that often. Griffin actually got added to our list as kind of a joke and then we both ended up liking it. MH has called my little sister Griffin since he met her because her last name sounds similar. Idk, it's a cute joke between them. But I also like that in a way it'd be after my sister. Idk if it's trendy, I've only ever heard it on tv.

Cohen is very controversial. I would avoid.

This is fascinating. I had no idea that it referred to a specific genetic lineage. SaveSave

I like Dean other than I think of Dean Pelton from Community. Mostly that bothers me because he was "the dean" so it entered occupation territory & I don't like occupation names. Personally, I like the familial connection to your grandmother. My sister's MN is my grandmother's MN and my Mom discovered it was her SIL's FN when she came to visit and said "Oh you named her after me!" Meanwhile, my Mom is like, "Wait [insert name] isn't your FN?" It's not really a big deal in the end. SaveSave

It's been a while since anyone's tried to float Cohen (to which the answer, as has already been stated, is no).
Desmond is definitely by far the best of this lot. Other names kind of like these:
Carlisle Harlan Lorcan Finnian Galen Ciaran Myron Piers Willem Thayer

Desmond!
DS will always be a Desmond to me, such name regret over not choosing it.

I love it but I am feeling some type of way about it's popularity. It makes me think it's not *the* name.

Is there a big surge this year or something. I’ve never heard of anyone using it. Maybe it’s regional or something.

I have met 3 deans under 5 in the past several months (gym daycare, church, DDs friends sibling). And other online boards I've gone on it seems to be common. I'm probably being extra. I still love the name, I'm just iffy about it.

notmoose I completely understand. I know once something is on your radar you will run into it more. Hope you find (or already found!) a name you love! I am overwhelmed and waiting a while to start thinking about it.

If you’re iffy on popularity, scrap Griffin. It’s not wildly popular but is a trendy name I hear enough for it to feel of the moment. I really like Desmond. Dean is very nice too.

My BFF's nephew is named Dean, and I feel like it might be a southern thing. I personally love it, but I get not wanting to use a name you see a lot of.
