My 2.5 year old has an adorable curly but crazy to manage mane. I love having it long because when I take the time to sit down with it, it can look like this But let’s face it, 90% of the time we are just at home, or when we are out she’s wearing a toque because winter, so despite combing and conditioning it almost every night, by the time she wakes up in the morning..this is the amount of bed head I’m navigating through every day. I have thick wavy hair. This is all new for me. Does anyone here have any other tips I may be missing? We’ve used real conditioner, leave in conditioner, combs, brushes, detangling spray, not washing it every day. Our dry, cold winters definitely make it worse, but we also winter for 5-6 months so it’s not a temporary time of year, lol. My other thing is, my hairdressing MIL is coming for a visit tomorrow and I’m just thinking of finally chopping it. Anyone with other fine haired kids have any cute cuts to reference? I’m currently trying to Pinterest search some ideas.

Have you tried braiding it at night?

Have you tried braiding it at night? I did just this week...and all the thin stuff found it’s way out and matted in the exact same spot it always does, and then it was even poofier because braid crimps 😂

G’s hair is curly but kind of thick. Right now she has light layers and no bangs. I wash it every three days and condition it then too. I usually put it in a ponytail for school. Before I brush it, I put in a leave in conditioner spray for curly hair. I will edit this post with the name of the product later because I don’t remember it right now. Here is her hair when it feels like being super cute and curly after a bath. This is it when it’s a mess

Omg marygracerich that ponytail! So adorable!! L’s hair isn’t that thick, or doesn’t have that much of it or something, but I’m hoping that comes a bit with time. Maybe I do still wash her hair too often. I usually go every second night. And I should probably start getting more curly hair specific products. I think I just need to get better at this lol. It’s just so different than my own hair type that I usually feel a little lost with it haha.

tiffrobot G has soooo much hair. She has actually had three haircuts already and she is only 2 1/2. This is the way her curls used to look the morning after baths. It’s not as curly anymore which makes me sad. I think if I cut it shorter it may look like this again. This is the hair product I use before I brush it will a Wet Brush. ETA: I have the straightest hair you can imagine so I am just playing it by ear with her hair.

marygracerich it might be the weather making her hair less curly. The dry cold air isn’t good for curls. It might just bounce right back up in the spring/summer when there’s more moisture in the air! Curls thrive on moisture

Curls thrive on moisture Hmmm. I didn’t think of that. Maybe I will wait for spring for her next cut then. She doesn’t really need it at the moment, I was just doing it so I don’t lose her curls.

I don't know anything about little kid hair but I have super curly hair and my secret is 1. Never brush the hair. Ever. Unless it's right before bath for detangling. 2. Put in a leave in conditioner while the hair is still soaking wet. 3. Put a quarter size of gel (I use cheapo stuff - LA Looks and it works great) while wet 4. Let it air dry or if you have to blow it dry use a defuser.

Except I’m a product-whore and change up my product usage all the time haha. But the key with curls is moisture. So a moisturizing shampoo/conditioner (I know a lot of curly moms love the Shea Moisture Kids line), a leave in conditioner while hair is soaking wet, and then a gel to help lock in the moisture. Also, a silk or satin pillow case should help decrease the amount of frizz and knots that she wakes up with!

I also love kinky curly curling custard

Lol! I appreciate it anyway @heartbot! Us bots must stick together anyway. Thanks for all the tips everyone! This sounds like it will be super useful. If anyone is still following along, I did get MIL to get rid of some yesterday..clean up all the dried out stuff and I’m feeling armed with more information now from this thread to manage it better now!

It looks great! Her hair color is gorgeous too.
Other random tips I didn't include earlier:
When she sleeps try to either put it up in a high bun on her head or braids.
I only shampoo mine every other day.
When you apply hair products scrunch the hair from the bottom and hold it for a few seconds.
Try to find a detangling brush so when you brush it before bath it doesn't pull her hair out.

For all you curly hair ladies I love my Ouidad products, expensive but worth it. I also think they have kid products too.

And I use a ton of gel but my gel doesn’t make your hair crunchy which is one reason I love it.

Alright I’ve officially got Shea Moisture kids shampoo and conditioner on order, a different kind of leave in conditioner than I’ve been using, and a silk pillow case. Looking forward to trying out some new ideas!!

I’m going to take a moment in here to mourn DD2’s curls. 1.5 years ago (and in the humidity) her hair looked liked this. Ringlets for daysssss. The longer it got the less curly it became on top and the bottom was so ratty and unhealthy looking. We trimmed off a couple of inches hoping it would bring the curl back, but right now, no dice. This is earlier this month. I know when the humidity comes back she’ll have more curl again, but I don’t think all those ringlets will ever come back. I waited 4.5 years to cut her hair. I’m so sad. 🤷🏼♀️

ajetter I bet a lot of that curl will come back in the summer! Also, my hair was very similar to your DD’s hair in that 2nd pic when I was little, but once I hit puberty my hair got super curly. So you never know!
