Help! I've developed really bad postpartum hair loss. To the point where I'm getting bald spots at my temples. I have an appointment tomorrow with my hairstylist to do something about it. The question, what should I do? I'm seriously contemplating chopping it all off, but I'm not sure how far to go. I need a hairstyle with low daily maintenance, where I don't have to do much with it in order for it to look nice. So, GD, can you help me? Thanks in advance! Photos showing the thinning at the temples in the below spoiler. Good full face view for matching with potential hairstyles, and bonus pic of Lugnut under this spoiler.

My hair continues to fall out in sheets. My baby is 17 months. Will it ever end?
I cut it to my chin. Easier to wash, easier to dry and I look more put together in less time. I do miss my long hair!
I can’t help specifically with what kind of cut but I will warn you that the shedding could continue for a bit so think long term for the moment.

I have been there. Twice. I got bangs cut both times to camouflage the really thin areas. I did blunt and straight across once, which I loved but was just a bit of maintenance since I had to straighten just my bangs in the morning for 5-8 minutes. I did longer sideswept bangs layered into my hair the second time and just styled as usual.
I actually preferred the straight across bangs because I could put the rest of my hair up and still look like I had made an effort. Plus once the hair starts growing back you have to deal with a fuzzy hair halo until it gets longer and the bangs hid that as well.
I would be wary of chopping it all off unless you’ve done it before and know how it works with your hair. Really short can actually be a decent amount of work and regular maintenance. Also then you can’t throw it into a ponytail, which is really nice to be able to do with a baby, especially with their grabby little hair pulling hands.
The hair will grow back, I promise. It’s just another one of the really glamorous parts of childbirth.

I cut my hair into a long bob when I was dealing with PP hair loss. It was just below my chin with layers. It was fairly low maintenance and hid the shedding well. It was also still long enough to pull it up into a little pony on weekends or whenever I wanted it out of my face.

I cut my hair between my chin and my shoulders when my PP shedding was at its worse. It was much easier, mentally, to not see the chunks of hair be as big. It also made it look fuller and was easier to style.
That's basically how my hair has stayed in the 2 years since then. That's also around the time period I fell in love with dry shampoo. It gives me a little more volume.
FWIW, I cut my hair really short after my first was born. I don't really recommend that. An interim length will be less jarring for you and an easier grow-out.

Same as joy, mine looked just like your pic. I cut it to chin length. I was so, so, so nervous because I've never had short hair in my entire life so I was really worried about HAVING to blow dry it and not being able to pull it into my usual lazy bun. But I was amazed how much I love it and how easy it is. Blow dry takes like under 3 minutes and it's good to go for 3 days.

I'm leaning towards a long bob. Maybe somewhere between ear and chin length. I've done super short before (my hair was an inch long at one point during high school), and it was not the greatest look. I have too much forehead to go that short, lol.
Thanks for the advice guys!

I'd get a long bob, with some layers and bangs.
PP hair loss is a biiiitch. My LO is will be a year old in a couple of weeks and it still comes out by the handful. I have lovely "wings" right above my ears that are taking forever to grow out.

So everything I read said to avoid bangs if your hair is thinning so I've finally grown mine out - and it still feels weird and I'm debating cutting them this weekend. However, it does seem easier to camouflage the spots without the bangs - maybe because the bangs draw attention to where my balding spots are? I also found that adding some highlights helped to make the spots less noticeable. And I will admit some days I just wear hats and pretend they're my favorite fashion accessory vs. just being self conscious about my hair. I've found that a slightly stacked bob helps make my hair look fuller (you don't have to go too drastic). With my hair shorter I'm not constantly putting it in a ponytail - which, sometimes I miss the convenience of, but I don't think it helped my hair to constantly be pulled back in a hair tie. Plus the shorter length is actually easy to take care of because it doesn't take as long to blow dry, I can curl it if I want to change it up, but I can also just throw some sea salt spray in and have the messy look on days I don't want to make an effort. I also think it's key to use the right products and think hair powder is a life saver. This is similar to my current style (of course that woman looks like she has more hair than she knows what to do with):

RajahMD , to be honest your hair, and you are really beautiful, I dont know if I'd do anything to it! PP hair loss sucks, but im not sure I'm feeling a bob or shorter cut for you. I'm super low maintenance with my hair as well, and every time I've gotten bangs, they seem to be the opposite. You really need to work at them for them to look good. Maybe some angles around your face to frame it? Wear your hair down as to not pull/strain the hair any further by keeping it in a pony, and have her add lots of layers for texture.

joy 17 months?? I think you just ruined my day. 😠It’s really appalling. It does ebb and flow, at least? I have Hashimoto’s but it’s controlled so I can’t blame my thryoid. Siiiiiigh.

I do finally have some hair growing back along the hairline and it’s like an inch long and sticking straight up and it’s ridiculous. I don’t know if ebbing and flowing makes me feel better or worse.

I would do a cute bob or lob. If you feel a bit hesitant about bangs maybe try side swoopingbangs that way if you want your hair completely out of your face you could easily pin them back.

I got it cut to below my shoulders and didn’t wear it up for a few months. You have my sympathies, I had bald spots on my temples as well.

Are you still nursing? My SIL swore by some pills her hairdresser recommended for PP hair loss but you can’t take them if you’re nursing.

I cut my hair into an a-line bob with side swept bangs during the pp hair loss phase. Less hair to drop everywhere. Plus it is an easy style to wear down without styling.

I'm just here to commiserate... After Ava my hair was falling out in HUGE CHUNKS, one shower would produce a hairball a little larger than a golf ball. I knew to expect hair loss but I didn't expect it to be that bad since even when not PP I usually have a fair amount of hair shedding. At the time my hair was between my shoulders and bra line so it was long which made it worse. This time I'm going to get it cut right above my shoulders to give my hair more fullness. Bangs are too much upkeep and only look right if I straighten my hair (which almost never happens)...
I also thinned a lot at my temples so I tried to avoid pulling it back. You will notice it more than anyone else so try not to feel too self-conscious, but it is easier said than done.

The LT I gave was for the cute pic of the baby. 😊 I had awful hair loss with G. Worse than the actual hair loss was the regrowth. I had shirt hairs that would just stick up in all directions. The only thing that helped was gel or hair spray to keep it down.

It's at my bra line currently. When it sheds, it's a good foot and a half long. And I have to pull it up for work (the last thing I want is my hair falling in some random organ). Thanks for all the advice and commiserstion. I learned about the hair loss in med school, but did not realize just how bad it could get.

My mom occasionally gets low iron and her hair falls out. She swears by Redken Cerafil products to grow it back.

joy and spicysalmonroll apprently Aug 16 BMB all cut our hair to chin length. The cut really helped my hair look Fuller and I think it is breaking less because I can't wear it in a ponytail. I have a bald spot on my crown where it all fell out and the Dr said I could get a steroid shot but I passed on it.

My nephew was born yesterday and we left pretty much straight from the salon to go to my hometown to meet him. I'm in the car now. I'll try to get a car selfie if I can.
