The double standards when it comes to bilingualism drive me up the wall, and it's not just in the UK or US. Here when people hear my kids are being raised bilingually with English they're all: "Oh man, they are so lucky! I wish I had grown up bilingually!!" But when the talk turns to Turkish families, it's all, "They need to stop speaking Turkish at home and only speak German or the kids will not be integrated, fall behind in school and lead a life of crime!"

Honestly, I get the point of what the tweeter is saying - but my emotional response is way to go, pick on a two year old. No one is picking on a 2 year old. Eh, the way I took it on quick reading, which is probably how most people read twitter, is it could have been worded a little more nicely to point out that children of all 'stations', if you would, should be praised/respected for being multilingual. Also, doesn't it kind of imply that all immigrants are poor? As I said, that was my emotional response - which is probably as valid as anyone else's. I just did not like that particular twitter.

I have appreciated Gillibrand’s daily tweets about PR.

This is terrifying. I feel like the scientific community has been warning about this (not Cape Town, but the general environmental, humanitarian, and political catastrophe of drought) for at least 15 years. I remember it being an issue when I was prepping for internship interviews, back when I thought I wanted to practice environmental law. And unfortunately we have leadership that is ill equipped to deal with this. Because this problem will impact well beyond the immnedi ate suffering in Cape Town.

I’ll watch SOTU. I’m a glutton for punishment. And I have FOMO.

I suspect the SOTU will be on in our house and I’ll certainly post here what I’m seeing/hearing but I’m not sure I can keep up enough to be the sole live feed person

Putin accuses the US of interfering with the upcoming election in Russia because of course. link "An expected US report that could sanction Kremlin-linked oligarchs is an attempt to influence Russia's March presidential election, Moscow has said."

Apparently since DT hating sharks has come out, shark protection organizations have seen a huge increase in donations. LOL

I'm not sure how I feel about this. The 'cloud' created by the administration has certainly been a distraction and I feel like that is one of the reasons but I wish we could stop the bullying of life long public servants because they hurt someones feelers.

McCabe is stepping down but staying on until March, which sounds like it was his plan all along (retirement).

McCabe stepping down early may just be him being like "fuck it I am out" but this administration's dysfunction makes me take a step back and assume the worst, always. It's quite annoying.
