Can we talk kids bedroom sets? We are planning on moving DS into the larger spare room in the next couple months. This way he will have plenty of time to get used to his new room and big boy bed before the baby comes. I want to get him something that he can grow with and hopefully have for the next 10 years or so. Initially I set my budget at $1000 but I would be willing to go up to $1500 for better quality. I just don't want to buy something that's not going to last. I would like a full bed, nightstand, and dresser with mirror. Once he's in school I'll probably get him a small desk but he doesn't need it right now. Any good recommendations or places to stay away from? Anyone have experience with Raymour & Flanigan? They have a couple sets that I really like but I haven't purchased from them before. Any thoughts or opinions appreciated!

Our 2yo DS is currently sleeping in the crib with the side off (toddler bed conversion). His room is pretty small, but we plan to move the crib and recliner into our room and give him this instead: www.roomstogokids.com/product/Bunk-Loft-Beds/Louie-Gray-Twin-Futon-Loft-Bed/36411635/ We’ll use the full size futon as his bed for now and figure when he gets older he’ll prefer to sleep up top and use the futon for studying and (more likely) video games. Short term, we’ll keep the changing pad on his low dresser. DD’s room is much bigger, so we plan to get her a bed with both bunk and trundle and the new baby girl will eventually move in with her. But who am I kidding, baby will be in our room for at least a year, so we might as well keep the crib nearby, lol.

Have you seen any in person? I'm pretty sure that was one of the brands we saw when we were looking for DD and I wasn't impressed. We ended up getting Ikea stuff because I've never had an issue with them. The really good stuff was $$$ and more than I wanted to spend on a kid
DS has an 8 year old metal bedframe from Ikea. It has survived a move and still looks great. We had a smaller budget and wanted to get a nice mattress. His dresser and nightstand are Hemnes from Ikea too. Total we spent about $850 but didn't buy it all at once, probably over 2 years. I believe the dresser (8 drawer) is cheaper now than it was when we bought it too. His desk is Micke from Ikea and just okay, but he likes it.
We ended up getting DD a metal Ikea frame and mattress last year. I was leaning towards a Hemnes frame, but she really wanted a pink bed and it was super easy to paint. We have been pleased with the mattress so far too. Hemnes dresser and nightstand in different styles/sizes for her.
I'm also weird and love putting stuff together, so that wasn't a deterrent for me. The 8 drawer Hemnes also doubled as a changing table for DD and worked great

mrsweasley, Quick question.. did you think the Hemnes was tall for changing table purposes? I'm used to being able to lean over the baby but my husband says it will be fine...

I'm 5'8 and it worked really well for me. I don't think I leaned over a lot though. We just threw a changing pad on top. If you have an Ikea nearby definitely take a look first, but dimensions are probably online too

We also bought DS the IKEA Hemnes set and got the bed with the slats. It’s nice because the bed isn’t as tall since we didn’t need a box spring. We got a full size bed because my hope is that it will last through high school. Maybe I’m too optimistic. Like @msweasly mentioned, it was around $850-ish. We got the nightstand and the 8 drawer dresser. We did also get the mattress there as well. I figure that can always be changed out in the future, if needed.

We bought "fancy" nursery furniture, so it could grow with the kid. For the crib, dresser, and armoire we spent about $1300. DS is about to turn 3 and I'm finally ready to convert his crib to a full size (we never did the toddler/day bed option because I wanted to keep him as contained as possible). The crib conversion will cost another $180, but I'm very happy with the selection. I plan to go a similar route again with LO #2 and just order some of the more high end pieces from BRU. Get the entire matching set and be done until the kid either graduates high school or completely tears the pieces apart... whichever comes first

mrsweasley I'll probably take a trip to ikea soon, I just wish it was a little closer to me. I've only been looking online so I haven't seen the sets in person. Can I ask how much was the mattress? There are so many options.

cornflakegirl - not msweasly but you can get a foam or spring mattress. We ended up getting a foam mattress for around $400. I’ve seen ranges from $129-800. It just depends what kind you choose.

There are so many options. We got the Hesstun in firm. It's about $400 but I got it when it was a family deal, plus I had a coupon for $50 off a purchase of $250 or more, so I want to say we saved at least $100 but I think it was closer to $150

mrsweasley , Quick question.. did you think the Hemnes was tall for changing table purposes? I'm used to being able to lean over the baby but my husband says it will be fine... I think our Hemnes dresser (we have it in our master) is shorter than our actual changing table (which admittedly, was a hand me down from a tall friend). We just put DD in a metal twin bed frame from Ikea, that is from when I was a teenager. It works wonderfully, and has a ton of storage space under (probably enough to trundle if we ever decide to go that route). I hear/have seen great things about the Ikea Kura bed - can be a canopy bed or flipped to be a (low) bunk, and is all standard twin size.

cornflakegirl, top bunks are not recommended for kids under age 6 because of the risk of falls. spring mattresses at ikea start at $120- we have one and it's perfectly fine for a kid. they sell them rolled up so they're easy to transport. i have to LOL at fancy kid furniture. my kids destroy everything. it's a good thing all our furniture is from ikea, goodwill, or-- my personal favorite-- free on the side of the road.

I always wanted one growing up by DH is nervous that he would fall off 😥 Ha, well we plan to leave the ladder off for a few years until he is older, just trying to get something he can grow into. The futon will be his full size bed for now and then he can move up once he gets older and needs more space to spread out.

I should clarify that I wouldn't put DS in a bunk bed now ha ha, but was thinking in a few years would be great-for sleepovers.

We are in the process of doing DDs big girl room and have things from all over. Her bed is from Wayfair, which I love for the variety and the reviews have never steered me wrong. Mattress from amazon, that hasnt come yet, but it was $150 for a mattress and box spring and again I trusted reviews. Dresser is the hemnes from ikea and we’re leaving the trofast system that she has had for a while in there for toys and books.

tarheelmom I love bunk beds! I always wanted one growing up by DH is nervous that he would fall off 😥 My mom gave us a really nice wooden bunk bed and I don't think I'll be using it. Like you, I'm afraid ds will fall off. I might let DD have them but idk if she wants bunk beds. Eta: Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think bunk beds would even fit in his new room. He has a low/angled ceiling on the only side the bed can go.

I plan on getting bunk beds for my older two. My oldest is turning 5 next month and my youngest will be on the bottom bunk (but will be almost 4 by then) I’m going to get the kind with stairs and a full rail. They are currently sleeping in the same room but my LO2s dresser is in the room that we will use for the baby now and I can’t fit comfortably 2 beds and 2 dressers without going vertical. I need a bigger house but I don’t see that happening before the baby gets here.
