Was anyone else following the kid who got rabies? I've read a few articles where the das said they didn't get the vaccine because the kid cried at the thought of the shots. Way too scary of a disease to not risk getting the shot.

I didn't realize there was a vaccine for rabies? I just follow the normal schedule so maybe it's grouped in one of the normal ones?

Who turns down a rabies vaccine if you were bitten?! Also I would be THAT person. I think raccoons are so damn cute. I would totally pet one.

Ideally, if you have access to the bat, then you should take that to be tested for rabies. Then you know if you need treatment.

The story I just read said they kept it in a bucket in the house for a week.. So they had it available if they wanted to test. I'm very confused by the families decisions with the whole thing.

Ive even seen recommendations if you see a bat in your house that you didn’t see come in... you should take it in to be tested because it could have bitten or scratched you in your sleep

Mmmm yeah that’s strange. I mean the chances are so slim that the bat would have rabies. But still. Ugh how sad.

There was one time my Mom thought she MAY have been bitten so they gave her the shot to be safe. It's not worth the risk for anyone, let alone a kid.

I remember a podcast that had a brief story about a girl who was bitten by a raccoon that they KNEW had rabies and they were having issues with insurance approving for the shots. either that or they had issues getting them in. Meanwhile his lady is like “I WAS BITTEN BY A RACCON THAT HAD RABIES”

Exactly. M hates the doctor because of shots but hello. Life savings vaccines > my kids aversion to them

peachsmama the bat didn't bite him. He got scratched. They cleaned the scratch and didn't think it was that big of a deal because he wasn't showing symptoms. Symptoms take a week or so to show up and once they do it's too late. I'm sure the dad is going to feel responsible for the rest of his life because he didn't just take the boy for the quick shot.

Oh I know. My issue is that the bat was sick. Thats why it was in the bucket. It was probably a "we'll just wait and see how it looks" thing and I can see that being the line of thinking.

Supposedly, the dad Googled alternatives to the vaccine and decided that washing the area was good enough.
Apparently their dog might also have rabies now.
The dad said they KNEW they should have taken him to the hospital immediately.

But if they have other children- I worry about their decisions for those.

But the fact remains they had a parental duty to take their child for medical attention and they did not. I agree the guilt is punishment enough.

Ok, I didn't know the Dad knew he should have gone. I thought they were just unaware since he wasn't immediately showing symptoms. Ugh.

I told you guys how I was added to that anti-vax nutter group, and I can easily see one of these people doing some shit like bathing in garlic, using essential oils, and doing massive amounts of Vitamin C instead of going to the fucking doctor.
These kids have ears oozing pus, high fevers, impetigo, all kinds of shit going on and their parents refuse to administer any meds, much less get them anywhere near a needle.
It's truly alarming that childrens' lives are in the hands of these idiots.
I don't know if the parents were like this, but they failed their child and I'm certain they know it.

Wow what a horrible story. The post exposure vaccine is a series of shots so I could kind of see wanting to avoid it but since he looked it up and knew better, it is definitely neglect.
I was rabies vaccinated working at the shelter and get a titer drawn at my physical every couple of years. Although since I'm not in the animal field anymore I probably don't need to.
