I left this march feeling defeated. The government shutdown isn’t looking good for Dems. (At leash what I can tell from headlines on the news) I don’t know about that. They’re going full-tilt fear-mongering, shutting the government down over something a lot of people actually support. I hope so. I feel really on edge. I just got home! We were allowed to go past the white house today. It. Was. Packed. I couldn't move on the street in front of the WH. We chanted Shame, Black lives matter, this is what democracy looks like, and immigrants are welcome here. People were standing in the park across from the white house and just giving it the finger, lol. I am exhausted. I was on my feet for 6 hours. My only complaint was the speakers went over and it went over the time almost 2 hours. Everyone was ready to leave and march.

Who is blocking what? The GOP House won’t even promise a vote on DACA (which they could just, you know, vote down.)

Most of the folks I've seen are quoting a long line of issues with the NYT for canceling their subscriptions, including the Nazis next door piece. There have definitely been some shows of bad judgement in the Trump era. But I'll swallow a couple bad editorials and features a year to keep funding the newsroom and their investigative team. I mean, the Weinstein story alone cancels out all of Bret Stephens editorials. And the fact that we were all glued to their needle on election nights cancels an annoying headline. If we're looking for a news source that always pleases us, I don't think we're looking for a news source at all.

Well right now the House is fighting over a floor chart. House GOP and WH are saying they won’t do anything related to immigration in a CR - even a promise of a vote. And the Senate Dems objected to a cloture vote on a 3-wk CR with no promise of taking up immigration. So nothing today seemingly.

If we're looking for a news source that always pleases us, I don't think we're looking for a news source at all. One of the chief criticisms of the left after the election was that there are these swaths of "forgotten Americans" who feel ignored or left behind. While I haven't loved the way some news outlets have tried to address/correct that (and do a deep dive post-mortem on 2016), I can't fault them for doing it. I think everyone, everywhere, is trying to find their footing in the Trump era. And I think a lot of the criticism of the Times has been warranted. But groundbreaking journalism requires risk taking and that's not always going to work out great. I'm ok with accepting some missteps. I might critique it, but I still consider the NYT an invaluable resource.

AYFKM? He's trying to spin the woman's march as something positive for him. He is so delusional. WTF? Well, the NYC march went by Trump Tower and if he could have heard the booing as we passed, I don’t think there’d be any doubt that we were all marching against him.

I mean, it's your money, spend it how you want. I'd just suggest rerouting the funds to NPR or your local daily instead of pocketing the savings. This isn't exactly the time to divest from quality reporting.

Sounds like *maybe* House and Senate GOP could be onsame page now: 3-week clean CR with promise of DACA vote.
We’ll see what Schumer and the Dems do.

I'm not surprised he tried to take credit for the Women's Marches. When he's criticized, his strategy is always to try to spin the news to take credit or call it fake. But I'm encouraged that most people, even on the right, realize how ridiculous that is. I loved so many pictures from the Women's Marches. I really hope I can go next time.

According to a short piece in TIME, Cape Town (South Africa) is going to run out of water on April 21st. Due to the severe drought the last few years and a population growth that has nearly doubled in the last twenty years, the city has less than 90 days worth of water left in its reservoirs.
The city says it will be forced to turn off taps for all but essential services. Residents will be able to collect 6.6 gallons a day from water points protected by armed guards.
Schools may be forced to close and parents might not be able to work if hotels and restaurants close. Tourism is a very large part of Cape Town's economy and that will obviously take a massive hit.
Fuck the GOP and any and all climate change deniers.

The captions for Trump "working" during the shut down are making me kind of happy.
"This WH photo is of @realdonaldtrump working during the #TrumpShutdown...with not a single thing on his desk. Just a phone that, in all likelihood, is not even plugged in."
"He looks like a toddler whose dad let him play with his work phone."

Eric Trump saying the shutdown is "good for us" politically is all over Facebook and Twitter. That's going to be pretty hard to play off as no big deal.

So they shutdown the government and the best they think they can comprise on is a 3 week CR? So we can just do this again in a month!? AYFKM?

It's kind of counterproductive, imho. They've broken so many important stories this year, but one editor fires off one bad headline and everyone's like "peace!" I guess journalism IS dead... Agreed. I think it’s better to stay- write in and say “I’m disappointed in this headline because _______ and I’d like to see this addressed”. Push for the changes you’d like to see by presenting valid arguments to support those changes. If you just throw up your arms and walk away over a headline it looks like you left in a snit. IMHO. Or flog Maggie Habermann on Twitter every Tuesday 🙄

So let me get this straight: not only were there not very many people at Trump's inauguration, but a bunch of those that DID attend were powerful Russians? Lovely
