My OB doesn’t offer NIPT testing for non-high-risk pregnancies, so I just did the usual 16 week screen on Monday (at 17w1d).
The nurse called yesterday and said the results were positive for open neural tube defect. They are referring me to a MFM for more testing: a detailed ultrasound and likely more bloodwork.
This doesn’t mean there’s something for sure wrong with baby, just that there’s a red flag. The internet tells me false positives are a definite thing for this test.
But of course super distressing news. We really won’t know anything until the ultrasound.
Hopefully the MFM will call today to schedule my appointment. My OB’s office sent over my info yesterday afternoon. It’s not a transfer of care yet; I keep my local OB unless the MFM says otherwise.
I’m thankful baby looked good at my first ultrasound at 9w. I’m thankful the MFM is less than 2 hours drive from home. I really wish I were feeling baby move already. I’ve felt maybe a flutter or two. I think 18-19 weeks is when I started feeling DS consistently so hopefully soon. Hopefully everything is okay. Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm thinking of you and hoping for positive results from the MFM.
Can I ask if you had any bleeding first tri? My second's test came back elevated for Spina Bifida. The MFM found nothing during their ultrasounds and tests and she's now 2.5 & perfectly perfect. The MFM & my OB both stressed that sometimes first tri bleeding (I had a lot of spotting) can give false positives/elevated results.

I’ll be thinking of you, that must be very stressful.
It’s not too abnormal not to have movement yet, though I know it would be reassuring to you if you did. I hope you are able to get into the MFM soon and get more answers. I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you.

Glad to hear you got that scheduled, I’m sorry for the worry though. I hope you get good news at your ultrasound. I’m keeping you in my thoughts.
FWIW, I felt a couple of flutters here and there, maybe, before the last week and I’m 20w now. My MW and the OB said that’s totally normal.

That is very stressful lily, I will be thinking of you and will hope for the best news next week ! FYI, I am just starting to feel stronger movement a couple times a day and I am 19w, so it is not abnormal, but I was a bit worried about it too, so hugs.

Also, RE: movement. Do you know where your placenta is? I've felt both previous pregnancies fairly early (flutters right around the start of second tri, full on kicks around 18 weeks). I have an anterior placenta this time and just started feeling full on kicks/movements within the last week or two and I'll be 24 weeks on Saturday.

I’m sorry to hear this lily. It’s natural to be worried and it’s great you’re going to your appointment so soon. Keep us updated, odds are it’s nothing so best to get it checked.

But I’ll find out on Wednesday I’m sure. I know it’s totally normal not feeling movement yet, but this on top of being so crazy sick this whole pregnancy... eh, makes a momma anxious. Wednesday can’t get here fast enough.

Oh no, I'm so sorry you're having to go through all this. Thinking of you and hoping the appointment on Wednesday brings good news. <3
I only recently started being confident that I'm feeling baby move and even then, it's not like it was with DS1 and it's impossible not to compare pregnancies.

Forecast is calling for 1-3” of snow tomorrow. Louisiana shuts down for that kind of winter weather, so every time my phone has rung today I’ve been terrified it’s the MFM preemptively cancelling Wednesday clinic. Hasn’t happened yet, so FX it doesn’t and we can make the 80 mile drive safely.

Thus far MFM has only rescheduled appointments 830am and earlier tomorrow. So as long as we can make the drive, we should have the appointment tomorrow.

I hope there's no rescheduling. In December they had the roads pretty much cleared by late morning so FX.

Baby looks fine!!! And we’re having a boy!
Have to return in 10 weeks for another ultrasound because sometimes high AFP is correlated with restricted growth, but baby is a great size right now.
