My DS arrived unexpectedly before I even thought of packing a bag, so I was wondering if any BTDT mom's wanted to share what they packed and what they actually used.

Things I actually used:
2-3 pairs of comfy clothes (and at that I think I only used one, I was in the hospital gown most of the time) Toiletries Phone charger 1-2 pairs of clothes for baby Nursing stuff if you plan on BFing (bras, pillow, nipple cream, etc)
My hospital provided a TON of stuff for me & baby, I suppose you could call ahead and check or ask when you do your hospital tour. The only thing they provided for H was something to sleep on, so I would advise having him pack like he's going away for a weekend + snacks, pain meds, a blanket, and a pillow.

I packed a lot of stuff but really only used:
- toiletries - phone charger & extension cord - outfit for baby to come home in and blanket - outfit for me to come home in - STD form - extra bags
I stayed in the hospital gown and used the underwear and pads they provided. The baby only wore a diaper and was wrapped in a blanket the whole time. They also gave me samples of lanolin cream when I needed it.
I had a scheduled CS though so I didn't need anything for the actual labor and delivery part.

I packed too much stuff for me the first time around. I didn't wear any of the clothes I packed for myself, except a going home outfit of maternity yoga pants and a maternity top. I wore hospital gowns for my entire stay - didn't want to get my own clothes/underwear gross and possibly stained from blood (sorry TMI). I shouldn't have packed so many feminine/postpartum care products - the hospital provided all the pads, underwear, self-care supplies, diapers, nipple cream, tucks pads, etc. that I could possibly need. I also didn't need to bring my own breast pump - the hospital grade ones are great and they should have one for you to use if you need it (of course things might be different at various hospitals, so I think it would be a good idea to check what supplies the hospital provides in advance).
The things I used were: -prenatal vitamins (since I planned to breastfeed) -phone charger -toiletries/toothbrush -chapstick -basic makeup for going home -one going home outfit for me -one going home outfit for baby (although I am glad we had 2-3 packed in case of an accident or spit up). -snacks for DH -pillows from home for DH (the hospital ones they gave him sucked)
Wish I had packed:
-hands-free pumping bra. DS didn't latch until day 3, so I had to pump the first 3 days. It was so annoying to hold the pump flanges to my chest every 2 hours for 20 minutes. Couldn't use my phone or anything, and just had to kind of stare at the wall. Ugh.
I would also second that DH should pack as though he is going away for the weekend.
Finally, if it's going to be cold outside, I would pack a blanket and maybe a warmer hat you could use for when you transfer baby to the car and for the drive home.

At least mine did, and other hospitals in my area. Like others said, I lived in the hospital gown (it was BFing friendly) so I basically brought a bunch of clothes and only ended up wearing a maxi dress out (July baby). I wouldnt pack too many clothes for yourself. Extra bags are key so that you can "steal" a bunch of stuff from the hospital (mesh undies, pads, diapers, etc...). This time around I'll bring: Snacks for DH and myself (if I'm allowed to eat) Vaseline over chapstick - lasts longer Toiletries (toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, hair ties, etc...) Additional Empty bags (probably just 1-2) Nursing pillow/additional pillow from home. My bed was not comfy first time around. Extra sheets/blankets/pillow for DH Phone/iPad chargers Outfit to bring baby home in Possibly a nice robe for me for pictures Makeup for pictures (#vain)

rachydc, I've heard the hospital pads are like bricks, so I'm bringing some of my own for comfort.

rachydc , I've heard the hospital pads are like bricks, so I'm bringing some of my own for comfort. Well, they are but much needed bricks!! Our hospital had pads with ice packs built into them and they were AMAZING. I didnt tear or anything but doesn't mean I was any less sore. I used them only the first few days, then once I was home I was back in my own pads.

Things I used:
Snacks Toiletries Toothbrush Hairbrush Makeup Comfy pajamas (it felt good to get out of a hospital robe) Going home outfit for baby Going home outfit for me Clothes for DH Phone chargers Extension cord for charger Flip flops Chapstick Coconut oil for nipples Extra hair elastics
Things the hospital gave me that I used:
Lansinoh nipple cream Pads and mesh underwear (They were the best. The nurses gave me extra to take home.) Colace Fuzzy socks Diapers Onesies Hats Blankets
If I had it to do over, I'd bring a nursing pillow. Didn't even realize how amazing my nursing pillow was until like a week later when I actually started using it.
Things I had no use for:
Bras (went braless the whole time until we left.) Books iPad (I was just too tired to even think about reading.)

rachydc , I've heard the hospital pads are like bricks, so I'm bringing some of my own for comfort. Make sure they are huge and highly absorbent. +1 to rachydc's need for ice packs. I, unfortunately, did have a lot of stitches and going without the ice pack and giant hospital provided pad was not going to happen. They give you the brick pads for a reason. If you really don't want to use them I would suggest an adult diaper. I bought some always ones based on a blog post I read before I had my first and they were a complete lifesaver when I got home. The LAST thing I want to worry about with everything PP and newborn related going on is leaking blood on my bed or couch. Everyone, buy the adult diapers!

+1 about the pads with ice packs in them - totally forgot about that. I only used them the first few days, but they were amazeballs. Also, my hospital gave me the biggest pads I had ever seen in my life - but I needed them and was glad they were provided. I had brought some of my own (which I had thought would be big enough), but didn't end up using them because they wouldn't have done the job. This is also TMI - but the big issue is when you stand up to go to the bathroom or walk around. So.much.blood. I think only the massive hospital pads or an adult diaper could handle that, at least for the first day or two. That's just me though, maybe I bled more than others.

Lurker adding in slippers and shower shoes. The hospital provided slipper socks but then you're bringing in all the floor germs into bed with you or having to find socks before getting up and about your room or to use the restroom.
Also I brought a small notepad and pen for writing down questions for lactation consultants, doctors, pedi, etc. and visitor/gift lists for thank you notes.

Thanks everyone!
I'm delivering in the same hospital, so I know they'll have all the recovery stuff for me and diapers etc for baby.

@starzia I tried explaining this to MH. At work we have this think call BCP/DR (business continuity/disaster recovery plans) After the look of pure horror cleared my face, he asked if we have a DR plan for my vag. I told him to stop before he made me pee from laughing so hard

@starzia Are you doing an at home birth (sorry if you said already and I missed it)? If so, do you have tucks pads, a peri bottle, and a sitz bath (they sell these attachments you can put on the toilet seat, so you don't have to climb in the tub)? I remember thinking the tucks pads were the best thing ever. The sitz bath is supposed to be soothing too - you can add ingredients to it as well that helps with healing. I didn't have one, so I ended up using my peri bottle instead. However, I think a sitz bath would have been convenient/nice. The peri bottle basically allows you to squirt up water to wash things off after you use the bathroom for the first few weeks. It was essential for me - just made me feel a lot better/cleaner with all the pp bleeding.
If you are delivering in a hospital, you'll probably get the peri bottle and tucks pads from them - but not the sitz bath.
If I think of more things I'll let you know.
ETA: D'oh - I just read that you were asking about supplies for after you returned from the hospital. Ignore the question about home birth! If your hospital doesn't provide tucks pads - go get some for sure.

@starzia Oh yeah - for the baby, I would definitely have something on hand to suck out the nasal passages if she/he gets congested. We loved the NoseFrida. Nasal spray mist (Simply Saline is what we used) for babies is also amazing (better than drops) and will loosen stuff right up. The first night we got DS home from the hospital, he was super congested and was having trouble breathing - cue freak out. DH ran to the store to get the nasal mist, and we were able to NoseFrida the snot out. It was so scary for me though as a FTM who couldn't get the congestion out. The bulb aspirator didn't work for us at all. So, based on my experience - I would make sure you have things on hand to suck baby snot.

+1 to the NoseFrida. Gross looking/sounding, but very effective (especially when used with saline drops or most)! The bulb aspirator was fairly useless for us in comparison.

I knew there was bleeding but now I'm 😳😱. Going to start sneaking over to the mother/baby unit at work and squirreling away some massive pads...

@starzia, My hospital provided peri bottles, tucks pads, dermaplast(sp?) spray, and a sitz bath. The only thing I didn't end up using was the sitz bath. Maybe it was just me, but When I tried to put it on the toilet and sit on it I felt like my lady bits (episiotomy stitches) were ripping open all over again. So that was a hard pass. Everything else was basically necessary for me to function like a human. We also went and bought a new handheld shower head which was like a peri bottle, but more amazing for soothing and washing while in the shower.
For you and baby: Lanolin for nipples a nose sucker- the one they give you in the hospital is the best. Take it home. any fever or any other issues in your brand new baby and I guarantee you will be going in to the pedi. I wouldn't worry about any OTC meds just yet. Diaper rash cream Pain meds for you Adult diapers!!- It is my personal mission in life to make sure all new moms know about the wonders of adult diapers for PP nights.

The sitz bath was the worst. I did it once at the hospital and refused them from then on.
The peri bottles were essential. My hospital gave me a bunch.

Everyone (including my mom) raved about them to me, and I regretted not having one. Glad I just stuck with the peri bottle. I think I'll just continue with the peri bottle this time around again.

I delivered at birth centers inside of hospitals both times.
My list of what I brought and used is basically the same with the addition of the boppy and our own swaddles for DS2-
-I wore my own clothes and pads once I was able to shower. Not everyone needs the hospital provided ones. I went with the always thins with the purple wrapper for a couple days then dropped to the green for a few weeks.
-Phone charger/extension clothes
-iPad
- take home outfit for baby
I wore my own labor gown for DS2 until the anesthesiologist made me change into a hospital gown 👎🏻
The hospital provided kimonos, receiving blankets, diapers, formula, and pacifiers for baby and pads, ice packs, peri body, tucks, dermaplast, and gowns for me.
Both times I wish I had remembered my own pillow.

I brought - clothes for me, outfit for baby, computer, phone, powers cords, snacks, pacifier (!!). I can think of much else.
Comfy clothes for me were crucial. I felt better in my own stuff as soon I could wear them. The hospital gave us everything else.
Note - our hospital did not provide pacifiers or nipple cream so we brought them!
