Ahh I hadn't heard about that. The recs in that say they suspect it's over and not to avoid them so I would assume it's okay now!

Wait what is this about soft serve? Are you talking ice cream- I have all summer to be pregnant I will need soft serve ice cream to survive. I think it has to do with the machines, like if the employees at DQ don't clean the ice cream machine it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. This is terrible news and now I am not sure I want to eat bacteria infested ice cream when I am not pregnant.

This is terrible news and now I am not sure I want to eat bacteria infested ice cream when I am not pregnant. This is one I took my chances with while pregnant with DS. Soft serve in the summer is my favorite and there's a local ice cream shop with the best soft serve I've ever had. By the time summer rolled around I was far enough along to feel ok eating it, so I imagine I'll do the same this time. It's gross to think of what some machines may be like, but I choose to believe my locally-owned shop where the owner himself helps serve the ice cream takes care of their equipment. Or at least I hope they do anyway!!

Being horrified by the new knowledge that soft serve may not be safe, I did some digging. Yes, the concern is listeria from unsanitary equipment. However, since all commercial soft serve is made with pasteurized milk and many soft serve machines (especially at big chains like DQ and McDonalds) are very regularly sanitized, it’s probably fine.
Probably the bigger risk is blood sugar issues from all the refined sugar, but that’s a different issue.
Personally, I’ll probably not worry too much and still have some if it’s from a reputable place. I’ll skip the sketchy ice cream trucks though. To each their own!

Oh, to be sure I had ice cream during my last pregnancy. I'm sure I'll have some too this time around since I'll be pregnant all through the summer.

I hadn't heard the soft serve thing before! I imagine I had some milk shakes made with soft serve with DS! Refresh me on the soft cheeses deal - is it no soft cheese, period? Or can you have them as long as they're pasteurized? I feel like I remember buying blue cheese from the grocery store and having to look for the brands that were pasteurized....Although, that was probably much further along. Also, I didn't see this one mentioned above in the "refresher course": Anyone with pet cats! Remember to be extra cautious with cleaning the kitty litter as cat feces can carry toxoplasmosis. This actually goes for birds too! I remember this one well, cause MH was responsible for cleaning a lot of shit around here Haha! It was a nice for me!

tbirdlove it’s only unpasteurized soft cheeses that are a concern — think fancy French Brie. Most grocery store prepackaged cheese is pasteurized at should say so on the label. Also yay for not cleaning out the cat box! I’m also happy to outsource that job to DH.

I think most restaurants in the States use pasteurized cheeses even for gorgonzola or blue cheese. Maybe not at a super fancy french place or something, but generally it's a non issue. Here is Portugal though it is almost the opposite. Very little cheese is pasteurized.

I’m glad this was bumped up again because I thought of another question. When are we supposed to stop sleeping on our back? Like mid 2nd tri? I can’t remember!

I’m glad this was bumped up again because I thought of another question. When are we supposed to stop sleeping on our back? Like mid 2nd tri? I can’t remember! My midwife always said as long as it felt comfortable it was ok. She said my body would tell me when I needed to turn. I started putting a pillow under one side of my back probably around 16 weeks In my second pregnancy.

I don't remember when it happened, but I do remember getting to the point where my stomach just felt too heavy to get comfortable on my back. At that point I side-slept the rest of the time.

Super helpful thread, this is awesome.
Just realized, I'll be pregnant in the summer too! And this surreality took on a little more form. Guise! Yay! We're having babies!
My question... I've read the baby's yolk sac provides balanced nutrition through week ten or so and then placenta takes over, is this true that what I eat now won't have a direct impact on baby's health? I'm feeling guilty for not being up to eating many veggies, and wanting a bit more sugar than usual, and wondering how important it is for us to power through on willpower.

sunshiney I need to know this too. I currently drink 2-3 cups of coffee. I’m working on cutting down but would like to do it a bit more gradually not overnight. I’ve been so tired all weekend probably from withdrawal. I just realllly love coffee.

I can't remember where I learned it, but I believe the placenta takes over somewhere on the 8-12 week range, so that 10 weeks would be in line with what I read. But like I said I can't remember where I got that from and can't confirm it was a 100% accurate scientific source.

sunshiney From what I recall, the little squish’s nutritional needs are so small that our diets don’t make much difference now. I’ve been eating absolute junk this time around because not a thing sounds good. I keep telling myself that I’ll get it together around week 12 when I hopefully start to feel normal again.

sunshiney, Along with what's already been said I was told that the baby is such a parasite, it'll take what it needs regardless, so as long as you weren't malnourished before getting pregnant you should be okay. So especially in the survival days of first tri morning sickness, I wouldn't be too worried if I ate less veggies and more sugar! And TBH, I'm just happy I can eat anything right now
