Hi everyone! I’m mom to DS2 who is just over 4 weeks old. I’ve been struggling this time around to breastfeed him. His latch is not deep enough and he is a huge cluster and comfort feeder. It’s getting to the point where my nipples are never getting a chance to heal. We’ve been to 3 different LCs and have been told his latch is right and we are latching correctly. Obviously, it’s not as I’m still in pain. We’ve been checked for lip tie and tongue tie already. I’ve spent hours watching youtube videos to try to help get a deeper latch with no success. Do any of you have any youtube videos you could recommend for me to try? I’m at my wits end and am at the point where I’m looking at possibly using a nipple shield. I breastfed my first son until he was almost 2. I’d like to enjoy breastfeeding again without resenting or dreading it. TIA!

Flipple latch technique
Laid back breastfeeding
Jack Newman talking about what a good latch & good swallowing looks like- auto generated subtitles so they kinda suck
This one is long & I haven’t watched it all but I’m *hoping* it has tips on how to position baby’s body not just his head or your breast, because that tends to be the more adjustable thing and where the problem lies.

Have you gotten in touch with your local La Leche League Leader? They are peer support, not medical professionals, but in general lots of experience with latch and just talking to mothers. They’ll also be familiar with the professional resources in your area & beyond. This is the USA link but it’s an international organization www.llli.org/webus.htmlIf in the USA, Breastfeeding USA is another peer support org

LC is not a well regulated title & comes with varying degrees of training. Have you seen an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant)? uslca.org/resources/find-an-ibclc <— again the USA link but it’s an international certification You’re completely right that you should not still be in pain. Do you have any visible trauma, like cracks or scabs? Any signs of thrush, like white patches in baby’s mouth?

Thank you lily,. I’m one of those lucky people who live out in the middle on nowhere with no IBCLC near by. The 3 LCs were through my local hospital. I’ve seen a couple of those videos but there are some that are new to me. No thrush as of two weeks ago and DS2 has a doctor’s appointment this Thursday so I can have his pediatrician check again. I appreciate you taking the time to link the videos.

Have we talked about IBCLC before? Sorry if I repeated myself! There are some IBCLC who do video chat consultations, but I’m not sure how to find them or the going rates. LLL Leaders often willing to talk on the phone, especially if there’s not one local to you, and their help is always free. Sometimes the real time back & forth can uncover something previously missed. And talking to someone new can give a fresh perspective. I’ve heard great things about Jack Newman’s book The Latch but I haven’t read it personally. Hopefully as LO grows and his mouth gets bigger this becomes less of an issue, but no one wants you in pain just waiting & hoping. www.tt-lt-support-network.com I’ve heard this is a great resource for finding providers who are competent and experienced in diagnosing and treating lip & tongue ties, if you’re still worried that is a problem for y’all. I think they have a correlating Facebook group but again something I’m not personally involved in, so just going on what I’ve heard.
