Hello! I’m bluebird. I have a 2 year old son, and H and I have been TFAS for over a year. I’m 35 and H is 38.
I have my HSG on Tuesday afternoon and am feeling nervous about it. What have your experiences been?

Bluebird, I'm sorry you find yourself here, but welcome! Personally, I had an awful HSG experience. They hadn't told me to take ibuprofen ahead of time, though I learned later you can take 600-800mg about an hour before. It hurt way more than menstrual cramps, and you can't squirm or put your hand on your abdomen because of the pictures. But my tech and nurse were really kind and as gentle as possible, and afterwards they made sure I was feeling ok since the pain made me light headed. They had juice and crackers on hand, and they gave me ibuprofen there. Hopefully your HSG will not be that bad! Plenty of women do just fine and don't have that level of pain, so here's hoping you're one of the luckier ones!

Hi Bluebird, welcome, and I hope you’re not around here too long. I just had my HSG on 12/26. Definitely take 2 ibuprofen about an hour before. I really didn’t have a horrible experience during (a little cranky and a lot of pressure), but I had horrible cramps & dizziness/nausea for over a day after. It felt like I was on my period during the worst day of cramping. I’m really glad I took the entire day off work. I hope your HSG goes well and that you get good results!

Yikes, they did not tell me to take anything before, so I definitely will now. Will I be okay to drive afterwards? I’ll be halfway across town and supposed to pick DS up afterwards...

You should be fine. I had a 45min drive in traffic afterward. It wasn’t pleasant, but I did it. When I got home I got out my heating pad & popped in a movie to watch in bed.

You should be fine to drive. I was able to drive home, but spent the rest of the day with a heating pad.

Hi Bluebird and welcome! I'm sorry you find yourself here. I've had two HSG's, and they weren't awful. Definitely take ibuprofen 800mg an hour beforehand! The catheter they put into the uterus is uncomfortable/annoying, but not super painful. I did not get bad cramps with the dye either time like some others do. You will leak fluid/dye and spot or lightly bleed so bring a pad with you. Definitely take the rest of the day off work and relax. You should be fine to go back to work the next day though. Please make sure you're doing your HSG somewhere where they are experienced with these. I had to have 2 HSG's because my first one was done incorrectly. The catheter wasn't in right and/or I wasn't positioned correctly because dye didn't go up the left side of my uterus or tube. Long story short, an MRI of my Pelvis and a second HSG proved that I did have a whole uterus and left tube and my left tube was open! Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Hi Bluebird. My HSG wasn’t bad at all. They had me take Advil with food an hour beforehand. It certainly wasn’t comfortable, but I was good to go once it was over. I hope you have the same experience!

Welcome! My RE had me take 800 mg ibuprofen before hand and every 12 hours after if I needed. I also did a short round of antibiotics. My RE did the HSG himself and I literally felt nothing. He and the nurse were like, we’re done! And I was still waiting for something to happen. I had super mild cramping for a couple hours after but I didn’t take any more pain meds and was fine. Good luck and I hope your stay here is short!

Oh and I was instructed not to drive, but I feel like I could have and thought that was a little extra.

Try not to get too nervous! I heard some horror stories (and some not so horror stories) before mine and was panicked.
I took I think 600mg ibuprofen before hand and the procedure went fine. H met me there but wasn't allowed to come back. Other than the speculum being slightly uncomfortable, I didn't have any pain or anything. I did spot and leak dye for the afternoon so definitely bring a pad or two with you. They had them for me there but I'm not sure that every place does.
And +1 To making sure it's a reputable facility. I've heard of some having them done in their OBs office and they were awful. Mine was in the radiology department of a major hospital so they had a lot of experience.
ETA my tubes were open though so I'm sure that's at least some part of why I didn't have any pain. If they have to push the dye then I'm sure it's more painful.

I also wonder if the reason why my cramping/pressure was so bad was because they had to inject extra of the dye to get my right tube to spill. I have mild dilation of that tube from a prior surgery, and she thinks it may have had a partial blockage.

Welcome Bluebird. I was one of the lucky ones who had a very easy HSG experience. I took 600mg ibuprofen beforehand, but remember thinking "that's it?" when the catheter was inserted. My RE did it himself, and it was interesting to see and have him explain everything he saw.

Bluebird, sorry to see you over here but welcome. As others have said, I totally panicked before my HSG. I took 800mg ibuprofen beforehand, as per my RE's instructions. I honestly didn't feel a thing besides the initial speculum insert and a little prick with the catheter. I had one clear tube and one that was "tight" but cleared during the HSG. The dye is clear and after the initial spill out, I just had to use a liner for the rest of the day. Mine was done at my REs office by a radiologist and 2 of her team members. They do these all day, everyday. Try not to freak, whatever happens it will be over very quickly. GL!

Bluebird, Just came to add to the experiences of those who thought the HSG wasn't too bad. I did take Ibuprofen ahead of time, and had some cramping and spotting, but nothing unmanageable. And I went straight to work after and was ok. I have heard several ladies who had blockages say it was more painful for them, so that could happen, but I don't think that's the majority experience. Good luck!

How did it go Bluebird? I hope it was painless! Thanks for asking! I just got out. It was mildly uncomfortable with the catheter insertion, but not bad at all. I had it done at a radiological center, so now I have to wait for my doctor to call with the results.
