I hope this is a lesson for publishers on why internet trolls don't need book deals.

A prankster called Nikki Haley pretending to be the PM of Poland and asked her about the US position on the Independence of a fictitious island nation. Ambassador Haley totally pretended to know all about Binomo and the Russian intereference in their elections. 🤦

Just logistically, I suspect there may be a lot of people in the House/Senate trying to explain to constituents why they were racing so fast to pass this tax bill that people can't even figure out about the real estate tax prepayment deal. Ordinarily, in a big tax reform process, it moves slowly enough that tax experts can keep up and provide reasonably solid advice for their clients. This might be a good leverage point to use as well in the upcoming elections.

I will say, I'm really really glad I don't work in payroll I've read that the big processors, like ADP, will probably be able to sort things through by early February, crossing fingers - but I truly feel for the smaller companies trying to deal. And the poor tax assessor offices - what a mess.

It's almost like ramming through major legislation in a week isn't a good idea There are state filing blanks for the industry I work in where 35% is literally hard-coded all over the place. We're also scrambling to get year-end balance sheet adjusted to reflect our expected future taxes. Not fun.

people at my place are supposed to use vacation by 12-31 and can only carry over 40 hours to 6-30 of the next year. Apparently we may be revising that carryforward total due to the vacation people weren't taking this holiday season due to the Tax Act. Our people will be taken care of sometime/somehow, but this really hit a lot of planned vacation time for a ton of people in so many industries.

Not political but crazy. A guy named Burke super-liked my sister on tinder last night and she thought he looked familiar so she did a quick Google and... it is Jon Benet Ramsey's brother. He's a software engineer hanging out in Oregon and looking for love, FYI.

At my employer, vacation starts at 15 days off and up to 25 days (based on eight hour days). We have additional holidays/personal days/sick time. You're are supposed to take all vacation before 12-31 of whatever year. We do not allow people to accrue vacation for years on end into one big pool to be paid out upon leaving the employer (you can imagine the line item amount!). It's use or lose.
Currently, we do allow people to carry up to 40 hours (5 days) vacation through to June 30 of the following year, to allow for responding to client crises, etc.. With the demand on the time of our people based on the date of the signing of the tax act, a ton of people (executives on down) were unable to take scheduled vacation between Christmas/New Years. So, now a lot of these people were already planning to carry a number of hours forward to June 30. Let's add in another 40 hours of lost vacation time between the Tax Act signing and New Year's Eve because they were called in to meet client needs for advice on the implications/implementation of the Tax Act during the last week. Ouch.
Policies may have to be 'tweaked' this year so no one loses a lot of vacation time. But, service to our clients comes first.
we're not the only industry running into this - I suspect a lot of folks in any of the financial industry sectors have been working like crazy, and I think many public companies (domestic and international) are also working long long hours since the Act's signing.
I hope this makes a little more sense.

Thanks, dc2london. They'll figure out something. And, I know leadership does appreciate the sacrifices people have made to serve our clients. But, yeah, too bad this all went down right at the holidays.

My parents are scrambling to prepay their taxes tomorrow. They are very worried about losing the deduction. Luckily, their township already had tax bills prepared, so it should work out for them.
ETA: They live in NY and pay relatively high state and local taxes. Since they are prepaying billed taxes, they should be able to deduct them this year.

Is prepaying something we should do? As in prepay before the new year? What deduction do I lose by not doing this? Our taxes are not escrowed, we pay oop.

I'll even throw in an extra caveat here and say that that doesn't count Trump's visits to his golf club in Loudoun county (45-60 minutes outside the city) or Trump International (in the city). Alsoalso, GW spent a lot of time clearing brush in Crawford, but at least we can say he wasn't directly profiting from doing so.
