DS2 is due in March! MH and I have hardest time agreeing on names - the main reason we weren't Team Green again was to cut the work on names in half. Here is a short list we've managed to agree on to varying degrees. Looking to narrow in.
DS1 is Ev.an Da.vid. We are leaning toward Patrick as a middle name as it honors 2 grandmas - one Patricia and one from Ireland. Our last name is 2 syllables, starts with R and is hard to spell/pronounce. Thoughts?
*UPDATE: Thanks for great input! We've edited our list and added new contenders (in blue). Thoughts on this new batch?*
Theo Alexander Miles Lucas Jack Leo Eli Holden Isaac Milo
Removed:
Jacob Julian (I am heartbroken to let this one go, but MH is a hard pass.)
Charlie Nicholas (Nico) Max

Max because I'm biased.
I'll also throw in Drew because I'm biased too, lol!

TIL shadesofgold is pregnant. From your list I love Theo, Miles, Luke, Alexander, and Julian. I’ll suggest: Gabriel Thayer Francis Jude

Julian is one of my all time favorite names. My cousins name is actually the reverse of Julian Patrick and I love it.
I also really love Theo.
I’ll add Grant and Elliott.

I think Julian is my favorite with Patrick and the last name starting with R that I made up in my head for you

I will say that as someone who has an Alexander, unless you plan to shorten it, it’s a mouthful and works better with a shorter middle name when the last name is multi-syllable
I love Julian and Lucas.

crunch, we both love the name Andrew, but we have 3 close friends and a cousin named Andrew, so we've ruled it out. @heartbot, we have the same favorites and same less favorites. (And, yes, the same Grant.) Jack and Max don't sound great with Patrick and I don't know why I never caught that. Good point... everyone. Love the love for Julian. It was my #1 favorite for DS1 but MH ruled it out because it "sounded like a blond playground bully from England." Then we discovered we actually produce blond playground bullies, so.

GIRL YOU KNOW I AM HERE FOR THIS.
Theo - LOVE (this is our boy name!), but be forewarned that Theo/Theodore is projected to be one of the top names of 2018, skyrocketing up from 150 to the top 5, because Ivanka Trump and her spawn have ruined everything. I saw 2 babies on Facebook this week named Theodore/nn Theo, which makes me sad for my own possible future baby naming.
Alexander - LOVE. Also love nn Alex.
Jacob - fine/eh
Julian - great
Jack - great
Charlie - love
Nicholas (Nico) - great, but not sure how Nico would sound with your last name.
Max - great
Miles - like
Luke/Lucas - LOVE, also on our list, love how it sounds with DS1's name too!
Side question: a lot of these are traditionally, nicknames, like Max, Jack, Charlie, and Theo. Are you using them as nns or are they the full name? Just curious. For instance, I like Theodore Patrick > Theo Patrick, or John Patrick nn Jack > Jack Patrick.

We swing very traditional but that gets us into Top 10 territory which we'd like to avoid. (see also: three kids in daycare named Oliver.) You're also right that Nico isn't great with our last name. (Why didn't I pronounce these out loud yet?) MH doesn't like nn Nick, so that was the compromise for Nicholas. It isn't a top favorite regardless. To answer your Q, they would be the shortened version as the full name (Theo not Theodore, etc.) However, I think Jack could be a good nn for Julian.

I was 'meh' on that for a while, but Mh insisted so I gave in. Max is a great name! And I think it stands alone more than Charlie vs Charles or Theo vs Theodore. I think Jack stands alone too, I just don't love "Jack Patrick" as much as the nickname Jack and then some other name like John which might flow better with Patrick... ETA: I love Jack as short for Julian! That's super cute. Jack + Ev.an / Julian + Ev.an is also great for siblings, I think...

I do like John Patrick, but then shadesofgold would have two sons with (essentially) the same name. LOL I don't get it... Is Evan the same as John? Color me confused. Also shadesofgold Theo is gorgeous and you should still use it if you love it. We probably will if we ever have a boy. Then again, we have a girl named Isa.bel, despite 500 million Isabellas and everyone thinking her name is Isabella and us having to say over and over again, no, because we just loved that name so much. Whatevs.

Men don't understand us. So we have a different nn instead... @blanche I did not know that! Someone suggested Elizabeth/Elisabeth (a beautiful name we were also considering!) to us as a middle name for our Isa.bel. I was like ummmmm Elisabeth and Isa.bel are the same name....

Another question, is it weird that I grew up with an Evan + Miles sib set? And people from my small town would definitely pick up on that?

So while it may gain popularity, I would still throw that name in. I also like Miles and Lucas from the original list.

We have very similar tastes in boys names. If DD was a boy, she was going to be Theodore nn Theo. And others on my list were Julian and Miles. So those get my vote.
My kids LN also starts with R and there were some first names that ended with R that sounded weird with it. Like, the two names just kinda rolled together into one, in a bad way. And some names that ended with R that didn't do that. But maybe I have sensative ears? Anyway, just make sure to say Alexander out loud with your ln.
Just for fun, here are some others that might work: Samuel Patrick Isaac Patrick Adrian Patrick

I think that sounds good in a sib set and with our last name! We'll see what MH thinks..

Your reason for MN Patrick is fabulous! I love how that works out.
I'd toss Max and and Jack for clashing with Patrick, and Charlie as a given name.
After that, I think it's just down to how popular/uncommon and how traditional/trendy you prefer. I love how Evan perfectly straddles that line between classic and modern, so you could go either way with his brother's name.
My personal preference would be Luke Patrick or Lucas Patrick. I love how Evan and Luke / Evan and Lucas sound.

Nooo, I loved Julian! I think Miles is still my favorite. Isaac is nice, but it feels clunky to pronounce with your DS1's name. I know. I thought I was making inroads with MH on that one, but ultimately it was a strong no. It may go down as one of the strongest and saddest disagreements of our marriage. ETA: I still love Miles, too. Do you think it's dumb to be hung up on the fact that I went to school with an Evan and Miles sib set?

I’m NAF of Isaac. I like Miles and I honestly would not care that I went to school with a sibset of those two names— those are classic, common names. I do also really like Lucas

Yay, my fav is still on your list! (Luke/Lucas.) Of the new options, I only like Eli Patrick.
I think Evan and Eli sounds like an awesome pair of brothers. Leo, Milo, and Holden sound just a smidge too trendy to go with Evan (also not a personal fan of those names). IsAAC PatrICK doesn't sounds like the best combo to me.
I don't think you could go wrong with Luke/Lucas or Eli....

Of the new batch, honestly, the only ones I hate are Holden and Jack. Best of the best: Alexander Patrick Milo Patrick Miles Patrick
Theo is so much better than Jack that I'd be inclined to give it a pass, even though it really should only be a nn. However, when I say Theo Patrick it sounds so much like Cleopatra it is throwing me for a loop.

ETA: I still love Miles, too. Do you think it's dumb to be hung up on the fact that I went to school with an Evan and Miles sib set? Leo - It's okay. I just get hung up on astrology & Titanic when I hear it though. Eli - It's okay. It pairs well with Evan and if Patrick is still the mn, I like Eli Patrick *your last name* Holden - Holden Caulfield is one of the most insufferable characters in the history of English literature. I can't. Isaac - Not my favorite, and hard pass to Isaac Patrick *your last name*. It's a like of 2-syllable cuh-sound names. Milo - Love. Evan and Milo is an adorbs combo and works well with Patrick as mn. Also solves your "Evan and Miles" problem while staying in that name family. I'm so glad you came to play. I have all the same reactions as you to the new additions (most are MH's). I'm lukewarm about Holden and Isaac, for the same fundamental reasons you list. I also think Eli and Leo are nice but not wow. I feel the same about Milo. Can you put in a good word with MH? He's having a hard time not thinking of Milo and Otis.

I like all of them!
I think my favorites are Alexander, Miles, Lucas, and Isaac as matches for your DS1's name (Guess @blanche and I disagree on that last oneone!), but only because I personally prefer Theo/Jack as nns instead of full names, but that's just my weird preference.
Can't wait to hear what you decide!
NB: There is a Milo in DD's class and I never know whether to say Mylo (like Milo + Otis) or Meelo (like Milo Ventimiglia - or *shudder* Milo Yiannopoulous) because I hear people at daycare say it different ways. That should not influence your decision, just wondering which one it is.
