TIL what AAVE is. But I love this list. It very nicely sums up everything that was being said in the UO this morning.

This article is spot on.
I don't get uncomfortable when we have the convos today in UO. I used to but it's something I read a lot about it and I'm beyond the discomfort stage. But I do question how to respond, bc I read and I don't want to contribute bc it's not my convo nor do I want to make it about me. And I find the "listening and learning" comments somewhat obnoxious. But I also don't want the woc to think I'm just chatting about shopping while they're having the convo bc I think it is valuable.

This is a very good bullet point list of what was talked about in the UO this morning. And oddly perfect in its timing. It would be fantastic to always have a timely, bulleted list of UO each week.

As a white woman married to a black man, I sometimes don't know where I fit in discussions about race or discrimination or whatnot.
I don't experience certain things, but I have to raise my boys to face it.

I might not be the right person to respond here, but in my social justice groups, we use "holding space." It is a way to say you validate someone's experiences and walk with them. Again, anyone can correct me if this isn't appropriate.

I appreciate this and the discussion in the UO today. I was going to save this for my FFFC tomorrow, but I don't have much diversity IMRL, that's something that I feel uncomfortable with, and I don't really know how to change it. However, it's important to me to be conscious and respectful and to raise my son that way too. I want to know how to be better.

Bluebird, don't listen to me, I'm not the intended audience for those comments. So I was just noting how they make me feel, but I may be completely off-base.

I lurk these threads and always learn something/get a new perspective. So thank you all for that. I read an article linked in the comments of this one that I thought did a really good job going through the 'why' part of the discussion and what privilege means for a white person. I 'knew' most of this information but hadn't thought about it this way so it put the discussion in a different light for me. billmoyers.com/story/odds-required-viewing-white-progressives/

I read this a few days ago and thought of it as I was reading yesterday but I wasn't participating in the UO at that point.
I've definitely said some foot in mouth things that came from a well meaning place but were not the right thing. I'm grateful when someone takes the time to correct me but I know it's no one's "job" and it must be exhausting for poc.

I've been trying to figure out what I want to say but I suck at words before coffee. Basically I'll just +1 every thing that Cher said and echo Bunny that "holding space" is what I've seen in my SJ groups as well. I am glad that this is prevalent topic of discussion here and super grateful for those taking the time/energy to educate when they most certainly don't have to.❤️
