Have you guys seen this? Its a fan made origin story of Voldemort and they just got the okay to go ahead from Warner Brothers!!!! As long as they dont make any money off it WB is allowing them to complete the project and it will be released free on Youtube when its done. I just watched the trailer for it and holy fucking shit it looks incredible. movieweb.com/voldemort-origins-of-heir-fan-film-approved-warner-bros/

Yep, will watch. TBH, I never had any interest in watching Fantastic Beasts but this looks like it could be awesome.

Yep, will watch. TBH, I never had any interest in watching Fantastic Beasts but this looks like it could be awesome. I enjoyed FB, but it wasn't really Harry Potter. Plus all the stuff with Ilvermorny left a bad taste in my mouth. I find her version of American wizardry tl be very problematic

I read the FB screenplay, but haven't made the time to read into her American wizardry stuff yet. (I haven't logged into Pottermore in months because I just don't have the time to get sucked in.)

It's CA for one. The names of the houses are animals and creatures from different Native legends and different tribes. Some of which are sacred. Plus they are twisted versions of themselves. And 2, Ilvermorny's founding reads WAY too much like a white savior to me. I've talked about it before. Here's a link that discusses it some

And it's not really touched on in FB at all. They barely mention the school. But when JK was confronted about it, she basically ghosted. Never apologized, never acknowledged it.

I had had no idea any of those names had been appropriated, because it never occurred to me to look into it. Her Hogwarts stuff was all fictional (right?) so why distort actual Native symbols and legends? It baffles me.

And the Hogwarts names are made up AFAIK, but there are some parts that are drawn from European legends. Which is fine, because she's European and it's the mainstream culture. I think there was a lot of potential in her new schools to work WITH members of the cultures and incorporate them into a fictional magical tradition. But they way she went about it is wrong and discounts the rich history of North America. And the problematic parts too. One source I read talked about how she doesn't even mention things like slavery. I really wanted to love the expanded universe, but I can't. And I'm kind of derailing this thread. If we want, we can make a separate one to talk about racism in fandoms and how we should react to it.

Would have loved to see a more thoughtfully interwoven story with real research put into it but after reading about it I cant support it. We can make a new thread if you want, I'm sure there are plenty of examples we can learn from

I'd probably watch it but they kind of lost me with the heir of Gryffindor bit.
Pretty damn impressive for a fan made trailer though.

athn64,thanks for posting that link. I'm going read when I get home form work. I vaguely remember hearing about this when the Ilvermorny stuff first came out, but I was really off HP for a while. I did enjoy FBAWTFT movie a lot, because as much as I liked HP I never really connected to any of the characters and actively disliked some. SO it was nice to have adult characters be the main focus and pulled me back in to the HP world.

I grew up with HP, I was 18 when Deathly Hallows came out so I could always relate to Harry but I really agree with you about having adult characters now that I can connect with. I also almost enjoyed Fantastic Beasts more because I didn't know the story, I didn't know what was going to happen so the element of surprise was more exciting in this movie to me. All this to say I agree with you

All this to say I agree with you Harry is the one character I cannot stand! I always thought he was whiny and immature, and I know he's a teenage boy so that's expected, blah blah blah, but I just could not relate at all with him.
But I am also the person who hates the movie Jurassic Park because the kids in the movie ruin it for me, so I think I am just crotchety.
