So it was just decided yesterday that the ILs are coming to our house for Thanksgiving dinner! I've never cooked a turkey before. Not to say I don't cook. A lot. But stuff like that doesn't really fit my style. I do want to do a traditional dinner though.
I'm going to make turkey/gravy stuffing (I'll use the Pepperidge farm recipe/seasoned bread cubes) cranberries (fresh, cooked with sugar and orange) brussels sprouts (maybe cooked with pancetta and butter, sort of sauteed) butternut squash (roasted with maple syrup and other seasonings) bread-I'll pick up something fresh at the store on Wednesday
MIL is going to do the mashed potatoes and dessert. I've never made good mashed potatoes. Probably because I have never followed a recipe to try.... She very likely will show up with other stuff to eat too, she usually does.
What is everyone else having? Any tips on the turkey? I think I'm leaning towards just getting a turkey breast, not a whole bird. We'll see what I can find at this point. Will I still be able to make gravy from roasting that?

I LOVE cooking turkey! Makes the house smell so delicious! I usually put a couple strips of bacon on the top while it's roasting.

That looks pretty good @esg! We had our thanksgiving with my family last night and it was non traditional. Steak, scalloped potatoes and spinach. Food was good but DS screamed the whole time. It will just be the 3 of us on the actual day so I'm sure we won't cook a whole turkey.

I love cooking turkey. I might do one between the holidays.
I'm going to my parents house. I will be bringing cranberry bbq meatballs and jalapeno cranberry dip with crackers. There will also be cheese and crackers and shrimp cocktail.
Dinner will be turkey/gravy, mashed potato casserole, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cranberries, muffins, rolls and other stuff. Then dessert.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!

I also bought all ingredients needed for spicy cheesy chicken meatballs. I think I will make and freeze some and munch on the rest.
I love holiday cooking. I couldn't stop myself!

Thanksgiving has my favourite food! At least, it's my favourite when my grandma is DHs family are not culinarily blessed. This year is my family's year, we have to alternate, so I'm really excited! It's basically the most traditional foods. Turkey Mashed potatoes Gravy Dressing-i think that's what it's called when it's not cooked in the bird Green bean casserole Cranberry sauce Fruit salad Lettuce salad Homemade bread Pumpkin and pecan pies-i actually don't like these.

I love cooking turkey. I might do one between the holidays. I'm going to my parents house. This is me exactly. Leftovers are my favorite, so I usually do another Thanksgiving feast a few weeks after Thanksgiving. I'm walking next door to my parents this year for turkey day. I'm making the cranberry sauce in the IP, a brie en croute, and a charcuterie board. Also bringing the beer since I always have a fully stocked beer fridge and wine since I just got a Winc delivery: Chop Shop Cabernet Sauvignon, Diviner Sauvignon Blanc, Honey Beast White Blend, and Invoke Syrah Trying to make things as easy as possible on my dad since he's still not 100% after the triple bypass.

I’ll have to find it, but I saw a hilarious article about how to slow down the drinking on thanksgiving.
1) start with a sparkling moscato 2) choose a light beer for watching the game 3) have a aperitif while having apps 4) start dinner with with white wine and end with red 5) last but not least, have a digestif after dinner.
NOW with dessert you can have your shots of wild turkey.
Pace yourselves!!

My aunt and grandma are going gambling on Thanksgiving, so it's just my parents, sister, MH, J and I. I am doing the desserts. I have only done a pie like twice in my life so I am nervous. I am doing a pumpkin pie, a banana cream pie, cranberry relish and possible a pumpkin roll if I have the time.
My parents are doing: The turkeys (one in the roaster, one deep-fried) Mashed potatoes Yams Stuffing Gravy
My sister is doing: Vegetables (that's all I know)

My friend and I are doing Thanksgiving together.
We've ordered a huge Smoked turkey from a BBQ place I love and then we split up the sides. It's only going to be 4 adults and 2 toddlers but were having the following.
14 lb smoked turkey (only size they offered) Green bean casserole Rosemary Mashed potatoes Baked mac and cheese Pioneer woman stuffing (New recipe) Cranberry sauce Jello ambrosia Gravy Butternut squash bake Crescent rolls Dessert : Apple tart Chocolate truffle tart Cream cheese pumpkin swirl
I'm really excited because we've split the sides up and all I have to do is grab the smoked turkey the day before. We're also going to have a fire pit, some beers, and make smores.

Hm...I might add this to the menu too. Sweet potatoes!I'm probably going to make a few dishes ahead of time on Wednesday and then find various ways to heat them up while the turkey is cooking. I have a variety of slow cookers, the Instant Pot and a toaster oven that I can use to make all this happen. DH and his dad eat A LOT. So I want to make sure to make enough and still have some yummy leftovers!!!
