It dawned on me this morning that my primary reason for passing on a nanny is that we’d likely need to give her a car so she’d be able to fit three car seats bc dd2 (4yo) will need to attend preschool next year. Currently our plan is for dd2,3 and baby4 to attend $$daycare while dd1 attends before and aftercare at school. I’m reconsidering this now and wondering if getting a nanny for dd3, baby4 and having dd1 take the bus would be more cost effective. I’d pay a flat daily rate for getting dd1 on the bus and caring for 3 and 4, but send dd2 to ft daycare. I’d pay a higher rate the days dd1 is home and doesn’t have school. I’d give the nanny two car seats and permission to do a few free local activities with the two kids she’d have all day, but otherwise would expect they’d pass their time around our neighborhood and at home. If you have a nanny, what tasks does she help with that make your life easier? I’m assuming that would factor into what I pay, but I’m curious what I might be able to consider. So far I’m thinking, dress and bathe the little 2, general tidying of the toy room, run a load of kid laundry once a week. I’m terrified having a nanny might mean my house is destroyed everyday. I’d love to hear your experiences. What are your childcare plans?

I have less than zero experience with nannies, but iirc, some others here have had them before. Hopefully they can give you pointers on that front!
Since we only have to find care for this kid, the current plan is to get FT care for them M-F during work hours. If we get into the one we want, it's less than three blocks from where I work, so that would be really convenient.

My mom watches our kid while they’re infants and then they go to in-Home care. By the time this LO is old enough for DC, DD will be moving to preschool full time and hopefully the LO can just take her spot. dizzycooks i think it’s pretty normal for nannies to do very light house keeping/toy pick up. I’d just be sure to write out and try to include it in the job description you advertise. Rama I’m jealous that it’s so close!

Rama I’m hoping this board’s speed and # of members works in my favor 😊 We were planning on 3 in ft care, but it’s $1200/WEEK and extra for dd1 at school. Plus two pu/drop offs. Plus not on the way at all so I have to leave at 6:15am to accomplish drop offs by 7am. I’m trying to think outside the box.

I think I would expect a nanny to at a minimum clean the mess that is made throughout the day. So not necessarily vacuuming floors or cleaning bathrooms, but picking up toys in the playroom at the end of the day. I wouldn't expect her to wash last night's dinner dishes, but maybe the ones used for kid lunch. That sort of thing.
The baby is signed up for FT daycare at the center DS went to as a toddler. DS will be in 1st grade and will go to an extended day program at his school. I'll pay for the school bus to take him to school so I only have baby to drop off and then just have two pickups at the end the day, which is easy enough because I work ten min from home and nothing is further than a mile from my house.
That said, the daycare is thinking about expanding their programs to offer extended day for the local public schools, and if they do I would totally pay more for DS to do that. Then he and the baby would be in the same place in the afternoons.

We just finished with 4 daycare tours today. My brain is frazzled. We were thankfully able to eliminate one. But we still have 3 more to check out. Whyyyy are all infant rooms full time only?

Luckily my 3 are all out of daycare now so we aren't juggling that expense, but when my third was born we did have 3 in daycare for about 4 months. The oldest was half days only because we had district prek. We somewhat looked into getting a nanny but based only on cost it would have made sense if we had 3 in care full time. With that and the hassle of figuring out driving logistics and my own anxiety about other people driving my kids around, we stuck to the same center-based care that we used since our first started.
With this last baby and the luxury of only 1 in daycare (we do pay aftercare for my oldest 2 a few days a week... then there's camp in the summer) we're back to the drawing board. We may go back to our center we've always used or another one on the way to mh's work.
