I’m traveling to England with my sister, niece and DS this summer and we were thinking of spending a night or two in Paris if possible. Our trip is from the 13th to the 23rd of August. I know the Olympics are from July 26 through August 11. Do you think travel to Paris would be ill advised right after the Olympics? I’m wondering if things will be calmed down a bit.

In short, this summer is unpredictable due to the Olympics. You’re coming right in between the Olympics and Paralympics, which begin August 28th. The city has a bunch of road restrictions and metro restrictions that have been announced. For example, some metro stations have already closed and will reopen in September. You can read more here: anticiperlesjeux.gouv.fr/Museums and monuments will be open, but a lot are holding out their ticket sales for the moment (like the Eiffel Tower and the louvre). But you should be OK if you keep an eye on the sites to grab your tickets when they go on sale. I would expect most small shops to close for the month of August. I could be wrong, but that is the sense I’m getting from people I talk to. August is usually a month when smaller businesses close and with all the hassle this summer they are most likely taking a longer holiday.

I think for one night or two, it’s totally worth it to see the big sites. I wouldn’t recommend any more than that. Let me know if I can help with any other questions!

toebeans, truly if you can reschedule, I would. It's going to be a nightmare of people and nonsense.

You can always go to Amsterdam via Eurostar.

As a general rule, I'd not recommend Paris in August for the reasons jaidit shared about shops being closed, plus it is often very hot. Now, with the Olympics, it can only be worse.
