I found this letter from the president of Wesleyan University to be fairly thoughtful and respectful of the students. This I can respect I think my biggest thing is that fear that comes with a message vs actual hate speech when the fear is what is being used when they send in police. I’m not downplaying someone’s fear because I know it’s real but if they are not actively violent or violating space then there is no need for riot gear and mace ETA: and of course no hate speech ever

I think these protests are just bringing back the 2020 George Floyd memories and it got ugly in my city with peaceful protestors as it did many from outside influences and I need to just stop watching the coverage

Just openly painting all the protesters as idiot kids perpetuating antisemitism. Why are 18 year olds old enough to sign on to thousands of dollars of student loans and to be sent to war, but not to express themselves through peaceful protests?!

I went to UT Austin and am very unhappy with the university’s response. The treatment of peaceful protestors has been appalling, and it seems the situation is continuing to escalate.

My sister went to Columbia and we were discussing how proud we were of the students. And we are just so dismayed at the university’s handling of it all. Really makes you proud to be associated with those student but also really pissed to be an alum connected with the university. I’m glad my school (Brown) agreed to divest from Israel. ::hairflip:: Very proud of the work the protestors did there. Of course there’s plenty wrong with Brown’s response to other issues, including but not limited to their reparations. Womppp. I hope these protestors- students and faculty and family members joining- come out on top. They’re so very brave. I am just shocked / not shocked at the stance these administrations have taken against the protests.

Re Brown, I think the divestment is more impressive given that the Ivies generally have a large/strong Jewish contingency. Not to say that they aren't against the treatment of Palestine, but it certainly makes the issue much more complicated. My alma mater also has a VERY strong Jewish presence, and there has been no word about protests there, which I feel isn't a coincidence. I have several friends that lobby for Isreal in DC, and let's just say it's been a tricky (for me) as of late.

I am filled equal parts with rage and awe for these young people. I've spent all morning watching videos from Columbia and UCLA overnight, and I just... it's outright dystopian.

I saw on I believe abc news the title of the stores anti Israel protests when that isn’t really what it is. It’s anti war/free the hostages

The Hinds Hall banner made me cry. Also seeing these young people face suspension, arrest, violence and not getting to finish their programs yet they remain steadfast. It fills me with so many emotions and gave me a glimmer of hope for the future.

Some pro Israeli counter protesters are spewing so much hateful, racist garbage as well as being physically violent but I don’t see any media talking about it, which is frustrating. Some were launching fireworks into protest camps last night.

it won't take much to be less sleazy than gaetz, but I've never met a naval aviator I'd trust as far as I could throw. *Granted I, as a very adorable teen, was unfortunately in their company A LOT. You have to be pretty sleazy to get elected in today's GOP, which really sucks I got some dirt on Hawley this weekend, and he is apparently completely different in person. He puts on a show for the MAGA crowd.

Seeing the videos of the pro-Israelis attacking the oescefuk protestors is so frustrating and awful as, at least in the ones I saw, they weren’t being shut down by the police.

The one that always gets me is when they sing, "where you go I will follow, Palestine. where you go I will go. where you go I will go, Palestine. where you go I will go. your people are my people. your people are mine." ETA link www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwP7FbQ/

I’ll also be completely honest. I am just in awe of these protestors because I don’t know if I would have had the balls to stay through all this. The fear of suspension when my parents worked so hard to provide for me to get to college, let alone an Ivy, would have me pausing. Not to say there aren’t plenty of protestors in the same boat, but college-aged me might not have had the cajones to withstand the confrontation and consequences these kids have.
I don’t know what the outcome will be at the end of the day for what happens to these people in their day to day lives and schooling, but my gosh I know these protests can’t help the dead but I hope it helps the world truly stop Netanyahu and save the remaining victims.
