I have a very real (though slightly irrational) fear of my house burning down and destroying everything I care about, and I'm thinking about getting all of our old photos digitized. Does anyone have a service they have used or know of that you'd recommend?

This might be a long shot but check with your local library. Ours has a room where you can use their scanner and digitize old photos.
There are companies that do it, too, I’m sure.

My H brought ours to a local store that did it for us- highly recommend going that route as otherwise I think it probably takes forever.

My dad is a professional photographer and now that he's retired bought his own stuff to digitize everything and zomg it's so painfully slow. Absolutely pay someone else.
