Disgustingly, I think it's all too common for those with power, privilege and money to be abusers. In addition, it's also very much human nature to deny that the people you know (and find charming, etc) could possibly be abusers. We, as human beings, really don't want to believe the worst of those we have positive interactions with, if that makes sense.
That said, none of the above excuses supporting abusers and traffickers, obviously.

Dolly wrote Beyoncé’s version of Jolene (at least she got sole writing credit for it) so I’m not sure why anyone would have issues with it. Plus, it’s amazing.

Dolly is a true artist and welcomes work inspired by hers. People attacking this cover of Jolene like it’s some sacred cannon of work are so transparent. Like how many previous covers of Jolene have there been. I can think of at least 5 with the bands and singers I listen to. And if it’s about changing the lyrics - that doesn’t happen without Dolly’s blessing. So if she’s ok with it, why are people so pressed? I appreciate it more when people just say they don’t like Beyoncé. Just be honest. I genuinely just don’t like the cover. I love Dolly, I like Beyonce, but I don’t like the lyrics. I wouldn’t like the lyrics no matter who sung or approved them, they feel more cringey than empowering to me. (People are absolutely being racist and anti-Black regarding the album, so I’ve kept my opinions to myself to not contribute to that bullshit, but I assume this is a safer space amongst friends who know that’s not influencing my personal POV.)

I like a lot of the album but I don’t know if I’m in the same “omggggggg best ever” space as a lot of people. But then whenever I see any post of someone saying they don’t like it, I’m like “oh I know exactly why you don’t like it”. But I’m sure there can exist a space where you (and I) cannot love all of it from a purely subjective level without being a racist jerk who’s just mad that Beyoncé is doing it.

Cher all of us must like everything at the same exact level and enthusiasm, come on now. 😜 My husband openly despises Beyoncé (not for racist reasons) and also strongly dislikes about 80% of the music I like, and we coexist wonderfully. I’m always a little “huh” at people who look down on others for just not liking the same music.

Oh no…when people are dissing it for the racist / gatekeeping reasons, it’s very clear. It’s nothing about the music. It’s not - the lyrics are not that good. Or this song doesn’t fit with the album. It’s “how dare she” energy. How dare Beyoncé change the lyrics. How dare she call this country music.
I didn’t get that into Renaissance outside the hits but it just wasn’t as much in the musical genres that I listen to. This hits on the country, folk, sixties/seventies rock sounds that I enjoy but it’s so fresh and exciting. And knowing how much effort was put into the song choices, order, and how she brought in Black artists in the genres past and present. That’s what is making it for me. But I’m sure a lot of others felt the same about Renaissance.

I actually went to this super cheesy tourist country western dinner show with my family on vacation tonight and had a chuckle about how much the old timey music they were playing was like Beyoncé’s album. They had the stomp and clap western stuff (which I feel like Texas Hold Em is getting dissed for), patsy cline ballads similar to Daughter or Protector, the poppy Dolly Parton song 9-5. Like she does all that. Not just some songs about trucks and beers that are interchangable.

It doesn’t sound country to me per se, but there’s for sure country influence and fusion. The racist gatekeeping is bizarre to me because Black artists are the foundation for pretty much all of my favourite genres. I only really listen to older (classic, traditional? Idk) country/bluegrass/soul etc so I can’t speak much on modern country sound.

And honestly I’m not in the beehive or really a huge fan either and disliked Renaissance at all. He is not matching my energy with this album. I think what I like the most about it is the history behind the songs. I don’t like Levi’s jeans like everybody else (although it’s catchy) but when I found out why she wrote it it grew on me more. Can I ask what’s cringey about the Jolene lyrics? I ask because I have not listened to that one as much as the others because I do think Miley is my favorite cover of that one

I ask because I have not listened to that one as much as the others because I do think Miley is my favorite cover of that one It’s just really unrelatable to me. If MH cheated my issue would be with him. Even as a concept song I’m just like, why? I don’t foresee myself at 42 warning women about coming for my man. I like the original song (and agree about Miley’s cover), but it came out in the 70’s and doesn’t hit the same today, especially with the script flipped. It pulls on sexist stereotypes rather than being a refreshing take. I don’t care for the album honestly but appreciate the inspiration and some of what was put together. Largely, it’s not that serious though, and I’m happy people are resonating with it.

Jolene was literally just a bank teller that was flirting with Dolly's husband. She's even admitted the real story wasn't as deep as the song she wrote. I have a feeling Beyonce's emotions behind the song are probably more intense than Dolly's were based on Jay-Z being who he is lol. I agree with babybean that the concept behind the song feels outdated. That said, I still enjoy listening to it, ha.

We don’t wanna be raising married men lol. I think it would have been better worded along the lines of “we grew up togethee” or something else. But other than that I don’t mind the song. I love the duet with Miley like everyone else does lol. And I enjoy the album. Edit: I mean the line from beyonces version. That’s not in dollys version
