I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing, but this is beyond and should not be ignored or dismissed.

I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing, but this is beyond and should not be ignored or dismissed. It feels important that this one rich MFer seems completely immune to consequences. It's hard to ask people to believe in the justice system when weapons-grade crooks like TFG continue to skate by with impunity.

I would hope there are consequences for TFG for that, but I'm (sadly) not holding my breath.

I'd guess that as long as they stay on board the Singaporean ship they are fine. But leaving ship they have certain amount of time and then passports visas etc. But yeah they just sit there in a boat that still has bridge on it?

Yes, the article said something about visas/documentation. Most of the sailors are from India, even though the ship is registered in Singapore.

I read a fantastic book recently called Outlaw Ocean that delves into international maritime law and has a lot of pages devoted to labor and exploitation. It sounds dreadfully boring but was absolutely fascinating. It truly is the Wild West on the water and they really can’t get off that ship unless it catches fire or starts going down.

We had a ship that I think ran aground in the Baltimore harbor a few years ago and the crew was stuck onboard for months (?maybe? I'll look for the article) because they couldn't legally disembark and IIRC this was 2020 too and covid....let me find it...

Adding this to my list. I love books that delve into some niche I wouldn't think to read about on my own.

He’s a journalist so it’s really put together like a collection of long form articles and it’s very readable and digestible. I want to find more weird niche books like it.

I don’t know who reads it but since they’re long form essays with a bit of a thru line I think it would be compelling to listen to.

Today is Trans Day of Visibility and César Chávez Day!
We went to LACMA last week and artists were actively creating a mural installation of Chávez and the farm workers . It was very cool to see in real time!

Also IDK if any of you know Mercury Stardust but right wing trolls reported their TDoV lives raising funds for gender affirming care for trans folks nationwide, so persistently, that Tiktok revoked MS's live privileges which is such BS

It was very cool to see in real time! My cousin posted that today is officially 366 days since they started their hormone injections, and I am so proud of them. They posted a video of their new voice, and I almost cried.

My library actually has a day of visibility display of books and links to resources. While NY is blue, my town runs pretty red, so it's nice to see.

'A state appellate court in Fort Worth, Texas, has acquitted Crystal Mason of an illegal voting conviction that would have required her to serve a five-year prison sentence. Judge Wade Birdwell wrote in his ruling that the state did not have enough evidence to prove that Mason knew she was ineligible to vote when she cast a ballot in the 2016 election. In a statement, the ACLU of Texas said this acquittal amounts to a "victory for Mason, a Black grandmother from Fort Worth, whose life was upended by the state's aggressive charges." "I am overjoyed to see my faith rewarded today," Mason said in a statement. "I was thrown into this fight for voting rights and will keep swinging to ensure no one else has to face what I've endured for over six years, a political ploy where minority voting rights are under attack." www.npr.org/2024/03/29/1241615870/crystal-mason-texas-voting-acquitted
