The Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a container ship: The fucking NYT morning newsletter had the audacity to lead with “a bridge collapsed overnight in Baltimore, but first we’re covering trumps legal woes” ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME NYT A BRIDGE COLLAPSE IN A MAJOR AMERICAN CITY WITH CARS ON IT IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN DAY 5,786 OF THAT TURD. WHAT

So I’ve been getting pretty doom scrolly lately and feeling the weight of it all but then shit like this comes out and it’s like, there is so much progress happening even when a lot of shit is happening. And then I can breathe. Incredible indeed.

I had that thought too. Like, had it been later into the morning the bridge would have been busier. The fact that only seven cars went in is horrible, but far from the worst outcome. The 35W bridge collapsed over the Mississippi River here in 2007 during rush hour and while thousands of people were on their way to a Twins game downtown. It was a packed bridge. And that was just a spontaneous collapse, not caused by anything hitting it. My grandpa was on one of the first rescue boats from the Sheriff's water team to get to the scene. It was devastating. Oh JFC that must have been awful.

So it would have or could have been worse, despite the time of day. Ugh, just everything about this makes me sick to my stomach and heartbroken.

If anyone has questions or would like to know my interpretation of the ship that hit the Bridge, or if you want some of my pilot friends thoughts, just tag me!
For context: I am a marine engineer, with friends and spouse still in the industry. My BFF was a tugboat mate for years in that region, and her partner is still a tug boat captain. I have a few classmates who pilot in the Baltmore/Delaware region.

Truly terrible.

I have a few classmates who pilot in the Baltmore/Delaware region. Hi, yes we need all the insight please Okay. Please ask questions if you have them.
Everything I'm saying is base on the 2-3 videos I've seen. That said: What we do know is that the ship lost power TWICE in the three minutes leading up to its collision with the Key Bridge. You can see these moments in the video when all the ship’s lights go dark. In between those two power loss events, the ship veered sharply to starboard. There could be two causes of this…
From the deck perspective (bridge people):
1) The steering could have failed when power was lost and the rudder may have gotten stuck hard to starboard.
2) In an attempt to stop the ship before the bridge, the pilot may have ordered full astern on the engine. On most ships, going astern on the engine causes something called “prop walk”, which causes the ship to swing to starboard. This scenario would be backed up by the thick black smoke pouring from the ship’s stack in the moment of power in between the two failures, indicating a sudden heavy load on the engine.
Of course, both things could have happened simultaneously.
From an engineering perspective, ships have redundant systems as well as emergency systems. From what I could see, when the power went out, they could have started a different generator set (usually you need more than one generator running for a ship that size), or the emergency generator kicked on which limits what gets power and what doesn't. My guess is something was overloading the gen-sets, e-generator, or the board. Personal experience, in losing power the first time, when they started up the second set of generators, the load sharing which is usually automatic might have switched to manual. If they were running around (which I suspect) they may not have notice that the board wasn't balancing load in time between the new group of generators evenly causing them to trip as well.
Also, the pilots (people certified and tested to navigate this specific waterway) on board are American and with it being a ship flagged in Singapore, in all likelihood the mates (deck/bridge people) were probably communicating through an interpreter which would slow down response. Communication between deck and engineering is subpar on a good day, even with radios. Would there have been enough hands to start generators, talk to the bridge, give bridge control (yes the engine room gives and takes control from the bridge), and keep an eye on the electrical panel? Not likely!
Most ships of this size only have a crew of 22-35 people. Half of which were probably asleep until stuff started hitting the fan. On my last ship of this size, we have 8 people in the engine department. (4 officers, 3 unlicensed, and a cadet) Deck department has maybe 5 more people not including steward staff (kitchen department possible house keeping too). That said, Chief Engineer and Captain usually are up during days and times like this. 1st engineer (American term) may have been up, and likely on duty with the 2nd engineer. 3rd was probably in bunk. Usually only 1 oiler/unlicensed engine room personnel was up with them until stuff hit the fan. Similar with the deck department with the Captain, maybe 1st mate, and 2nd mate in the wheelhouse, and 3rd mate in their bunk. They may have had a tankerman, Ordinary seamen or helmsman actually taking the commands and steering the vessel.

My heart breaks for the families of the missing men. My father worked construction for 45 years (sometimes overnight roadwork). It can be an incredibly dangerous job.
And my heart breaks for Baltimore. I live in Maryland. While the city gets a bad rap, I love it. It has that unique mixture of centuries-old American history, salt of the earth blue-collar folks, and charm.

Biden says the Fed gov will pay for the rebuild. Asking Congress to act. I hope they put politics aside and do the right thing. When the bridge collapsed in MN in 2007, the House unanimously passed funding to rebuild it 2 days later, then the Senate passed it by UC. I know things are politically worse now, but 2007 was no picnic either. Let’s hope this Congress does the right thing.

Cheshie6 thank you for all of that information! I've always been curious about how transport of such magnitude operates. I can't wrap my brain around it. It seems like such an intricate industry with so many moving parts. It's really fascinating to get some insight on it.

Man freak accidents are just so traumatizing. We just had a freak accident happen to us last week and while we keep telling DS(6) that it’s not gonna happen again, I keep hearing about more (different types), and keep imagine more ways freak or regular accidents can happen.
The poor workers and missing people and their families.
Times like these I wish I had faith in something because fuck man, life is a lot.

We also got fed funding to rebuild 95 last year, so fingers crossed that they pass this 🤞🏻 It's times like these that I'm glad Joe is in charge.

Cheshie6 thank you!! I'm just so out of sorts today with this. My first thought at 5:30 this morning, was that some hacker had taken over our news station Facebook feeds. I have driven over that bridge countless times, have boated under, by, and around countless times, it's just always been THERE. There are still 6 construction workers missing at this time. I'm sure opening the port will be the largest priority after search and rescue but the port impact and the travel impact seem insurmountable to me. So sad.

I am so over people. Not everything has to be a conspiracy theory. The amount of people saying that the bridge collapse was a set up or terrorism is going to make me scream.

My grandmother is from Huntsville (and DD was born there!) and I can't wait to tell her. She lives in Georgia but most of the rest of her siblings still live in the Huntsville area. My mom and both her brothers, my late grandfather, and most of their other grandchildren are conservatives, but she's the reason I'm a Democrat. I know she and her siblings are loving this.

You know, the rest of the world teases that Americans will use anything but the metric system but I love our weird little units of measurement. And I love even more that in a couple generations no one will quite remember (without looking it up) why we call it a Scarramucci, just that it’s about ten days.

A time when being so terrible at your job gave you a measurement of time. I was honestly wondering if she outlasted any of the leftovers in my fridge or the cut lettuce. Looked it up, consensus seems to be 4 days. It will never not be funny to me to measure this way and be confused that jiffy is an actual measurement of time.
