My DS (6) is driving me insane. He needs new sneakers desperately. Buying the same exact shoe in a bigger size is Not helping bc he flips out that the ankle and heel area is “too tight”. When I put his current ones next to the new ones, it’s clear he has stretched the old ones out. Telling him he needs to break the new ones in goes nowhere. He also hates anything tight so it has to be wide fitting.
We had luck with TSUKIHOSHI shoes but now the ankle/heels are an issue.
We have tried: Under armour, Nike, new balance, adidas, Reebok, Merrill, random ones, and nothing.
Other than sending him barefoot i am at my wits end. And I’m tired of buying and returning. And repeat.
Any thoughts?

Can you take him to like, a dsw or famous footwear and just try on everything? My kid has narrow little feet so I’m no help with the wides, but even different styles and colors in each brand seem to fit different so when he was younger we just had to go take like an hour of try on run around, try on run around, etc.

Can you get a shoe form thats in his size or preferably adjustable and use it as a shoe stretcher? So you put it in and pre stretch the shoes a bit?
Try to Have him wear 2 pairs of socks when he first tries shoes on at a store. Tell him he has to walk around the aisle a time or 3. And then have him go down to just 1 pair of shoes and do it again. Sometimes that will slightly stretch the shoe but also its a way to trick the brain to think the shoes now fit better. Does that make sense.

And try low tops like converse. Bad foot support though.

Edited because I didn’t read the post correctly. Look up different lacing patterns that allow more room in the heel/ankle. That might solve some problems? Also if you may want to try shoes that are actually wide width instead of shoes that run wide to see if it helps (if you haven’t already).

Vans and Skechers both are good for wide foot children according to my meatball for feet children.

Thanks friends. We tried DSW but there’s not a lot in our closest one. Today we went to an outlet mall and tried 5 stores before he lost his mind on us. So exhausting bc he gets so mad and won’t even let the foot go into the shoe completely before he throws it across the room. We have not tried keens. I will look into those. I was hoping to try vans or Skechers today but we never made it to those store bc I had the same thought- blurnette989 low tops so the ankle issue won’t be an issue. AmyG I will have to look into a shoe form. As I walked away from him today at the mall (dad stayed with him) I started thinking maybe I could pay someone to wear his shoes for awhile to stretch them out. Like how fucking insane is that?? I’m going crazy.

Plae? My DS liked the “Ty” shoe. It seems low around the ankle and he never wore a pair out before outgrowing it (thankfully because they’re pricey)

plae.co/collections/kids-shoesThe “raven/camo” and “navy/steel” seemed to stretch out more than the “red/steel” and “moonwalk/black” just in our experience.

I did buy the 1yo a pair of crocs and am so excited for baby crocs!! I have one like this, see also his sock preference. Breaking in shoes is always a struggle. Sometimes he wears his brother's old ones and I've also bought him some second hand just to avoid that initial heel rub/blisters. They also wore Nike Flex runners for a long time. They are a looser fit and slip-on, no laces.

So I'm throwing these out there because my ds who does not like change and has wide feet has been wearing this style for past 3 or 4 years straight. I didn't realize they don't come in wide...I can't remember exactly how we found them, but I think it was me taking him to the store and having him try them on, and then when he loved them and wanted the same thing in the next size up next time, I bought the next few sizes when they were on sale buy one get one some % off. So I'm honestly surprised now to see they don't have a wide option and am wondering if they did the last time I bought them, but anyway, if you happen to try on skechers specifically, these might be a good one to try because they are picky kid approved by at least 1: www.skechers.com/elite-flex---wasick/97891L_BBK.html

Have you tried an independent shoe store? I find they have better training than mall stores. We don't always use them, but when we have problems and my kiddo says everything is uncomfortable, we tend to go to one. I've bought and returned an absurd number of shoes because her feet aren't wide but have a high instep, so she's might wear a shoe that is falling off her foot and still tell me it is tight!

My wide footed child can’t wear vans. They are just way too narrow which is annoying because she loves them.

What about the Under Armor Slipspeeds? The heal on those can be pushed down so the shoes are slip on and then back up for a regular tennis shoe. The heal material looks like it would be soft and flexible.
