Are we still using this thread for randoms? I have my first mammogram scheduled for Friday. Can't help being nervous. You got this! With the family history we have and turning 40 in April I really need to do this too. Is 40 when we are supposed to start those? I turn 40 in April too, I should probably look into that. I have my annual appt tomorrow so I'll have to ask about it.

My doctor recommended it for me and said I could perhaps start at 40 and get it every two years until 45.

Are we still using this thread for randoms? I have my first mammogram scheduled for Friday. Can't help being nervous. I just had my first mammogram a month or so ago. One thing that I'm glad that they told me was that it's super common to be called back for a second set of scans after your first mammogram, because they don't have anything to compare it to. I had a tiny dot in my right breast so they called me back for another mammogram and an ultrasound. The saw it again in the second mammogram, but couldn't be sure that they found it in the ultrasound. So they said that it was probably nothing but to come back in 6 months. Knowing that establishing a baseline in a patient can sometimes extra visits has really kept me from freaking out about it. But deodorant is not something that anyone said to me. Not in my prep work and not at the mammogram itself. I see it now from google, but I wonder why no one said anything to me. I doubt it had anything to do with my spot, since it was not near my armpit, but huh.

nelzie I had my annual appt last month and I turn 40 later this year. My GYN placed the order and dated it ahead for my bday. She said they will call me to schedule when the order hits. (No close family hx for me)

(No close family hx for me) Exactly this - I have some family history, but no one young, so I think 40 is the standard. My doctor also gave me a warning that they might want to ultrasound, etc. after the initial imaging.

I dropped my little kid off at daycare today without his lunch (thankfully it's a short drive back) and even worse, I'm pretty sure I accidentally returned my big kid's school library book to the town library. He does not do well with these kinds of mistakes and I was fully expecting him to refuse to go to school today but off he went thankfully.

I don't have any family history, but my primary care recommended annual mammograms starting at 40. For me the worst part was not being able to wear deodorant until after the scan, so I like to do them in the AM. They're uncomfortable but quick.

I had my first mammogram last fall and the woman doing them was so kind and gentle, reassuring. It was not bad at all. She quickly got herself a repeat costumer! I hope your first is a likewise smooth experience.

I slept so weirdly last night that I woke up from a sharp pain in my neck, and now I can't move it. Why is getting older such a literal pain?

Speaking of aging. Planning for my 40th birthday party is underway after much drama. It’s going to be a month after my birthday so I’ll just be getting over turning 40 when I celebrate again.
But 40 is the new 30 right???

There was an open house at B's school last night and we got to watch the orchestra perform. Y'all, he's first chair cello! I'm so proud of him.
We also got to meet his French horn teacher and he said B was catching up really quickly and that he has a great ear for picking up music, which we always thought too. It's really nice to hear someone with a Masters in Music degree say it!

This is timely as I had my annual gyn appointment this morning. I started mammograms at 40. Today she referred me to genetic counselling because of my family cancer history so that will be an adventure!

I think I'm going to find a new PCP closer by, which is kind of daunting.

For those with family history of breast cancer consider talking to a breast specialist, if you're able to. Based on family history, my primary care doc had recommended I start mammograms at 35, but the breast specialist also recommended an annual breast MRI. Good luck on the mammogram Rusty Red. I agree with others, there are so many callbacks that it's almost expected. Some of the nicest medical professionals I've met have been working the mammogram machine so I hope that's your experience too.

My doctor and the tech both told me that i will get called back for something. They have no comparison so they will find something to flag. And yes, the mammogram techs I have had have been absolutely wonderful.

I thought I was going to have to start early mammograms this year because my grandma was diagnosed under 50 but my GYN says they recommend you start at 10 years younger than their diagnosis. So I’m on the standard age 40 path.

H turns 40 this year. His 30th birthday was awful. We were going to go on a whiskey tour for his birthday this year and to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary since we never got a honeymoon. Of course now H’s cousin is getting married 2 weeks before we wanted to go and we can’t swing both so I guess our original trip is on hold (the cousin is a first cousin who has had a rough life and looks up to H so it would be upsetting to the groom not to go)

Anything you could do on the trip to celebrate

I'm not a high risk, as only my maternal grandmother had it, but doc said 40 to start as well.
SO's mom just got diagnosed recently and had to undergo surgery and now treatment, so he's hyper about me getting it done as well.

Thanks for posting this as I need to schedule my mammogram. I’ve been getting them since I was 35 since my mom had breast cancer. Rusty Red - you got this. Like others said, there is a decent chance you will be called back for a 2nd scan, especially if you have bigger breasts as there is a lot of dense tissue they might want to further explore. Some places have wipes to take off your deodorant in case you forget.
