To be fair, Barbie got nominated for a lot more than Ken. America Ferrera! Best Picture. Greta for adapted screenplay. I think Lily Gladstone will win Best Actress for Flower Moon. And Christopher Nolan will win for directing Oppenheimer, because war propaganda. But it is shameful that Margot and Greta were snubbed in those categories.

(what a moment for her and Native Americans!) But Greta and Margot should have been nominated.

byjove I don't disagree with you. But the tweet you shared ignores the other nominations Barbie did get. America Ferrera's performance was Oscar worthy as well.

I thought Margot did a great job as Barbie but I do get why Ryan was nominated. He was very close to completely stealing the show from all of them IMO. He's just a really talented actor. I mean, the Oscars are a fucking joke now anyway, so, meh.

I hope Billie Eilish and Finneas win for their song from Barbie.

And yes for sure Greta was snubbed for best director. But the fact that Barbie got so many noms at all is progress for a movie that previously would have been not highbrow enough for the award show anyway.

It was so well put together. I agree. I have watched it at least 5 times in the background while working. I am a sucker for a well made satire though.

I'm just thrilled at how many noms it got, while also be pissed at the snubs at the same time. Progress, I guess.
I can't decide which song I want to win. Ken's song is just perfect for the movie, whereas Eilish's song is absolutely lovely, but could fit is so many other movies with similar themes. So which one to go with? The lovely song, or the song perfectly made to fit its movie? I love them both.
I have a strong urge to watch the movie again after work today to celebrate the noms.

I'll forever be angry that Oppenheimer didn't even mention the impact the tests had on the local community. I don't expect them to fit it in the movie necessarily, but a post script detailing the devastation would have been the right thing to do.

I hope the "prog rock, power ballad, dream ballet" wins best song. Or is at least performed in it's entirety at the award show.
I'm not surprised Margot didnt get a nom (love her though I do). Greta not getting one is insane.

I have been learning more about it from women who worked on the project as well as the current fight for aid by the Downwinders in NM. Plus there are current incidents of lab employees being exposed. Just shocking all around and trying to finally become aware of the facts.

This is my hill. People make fun of cities that don’t get much snow when the problem is really the ice and the hills. Atlanta was the butt of every joke every other year but the city had like 5 snow plows total and is more hilly than people think it is. I lived on a side street in the middle of the city that never got plowed and it was like a luge for a week after any measurable snow. I just wouldn’t drive and people who did would just bump off cars all the way down. and I remember one year Dallas had the same thing and everyone made fun of them. So I support all the people dealing with ice and dumb ass comments about not handling the weather. No one can deal with ice. Our main roads were totally drivable by last Wednesday but the residential city neighborhood we live in never gets plowed so just getting to the main roads was a challenge until yesterday. There's also big trees so lots of shade keeping things cool. Ice is the damn worst but it seems to have happened enough here over the years that people hit the grocery store, weed store, then batten down the hatches which is basically how we now handle it vs trying to plow through it. It's better than people trying to drive in it. I roll my eyes at the teasing but I'd never make fun of another even milder/warmer locale for not handling it. Even as someone who has grown up driving in the land of feet upon feet upon feet of snow, driving in ice is scary and difficult. No amount of winter driving skills can save you if you lose control on any amount of measurable ice. Unless you live somewhere that gets regular winter weather, your city or whatever likely doesn't have the capability to deal with it. Not every place is NY that has road salt houses every dozen miles on the highways and enough plows to never not be clearing every street. And most residents don't have the winter driving skills. Better safe than sorry, every time, period.

I joined the local rec center as a gym recently and have, as such, had more cable news around me than I am accustomed to (just as a cord cutter, not because I judge cable news).
It has been downright twighlight zone-ish the last couple of days watching the pundits pretend like the NH GOP primary was an actual contest. It was like a surprise party where the guest of honor planned the whole thing and, still, way less fun. Just what a bizarre act of political ritualism to watch. Of course, a presidential primary is newsworthy, but it also wasn't.....news.

Like, it's always first, it never tells us much, and TFG was always going to win there? I'm surprised his showing is so poor honestly.

I think if Haley was going to make a show of strength it would probably have to be NH, and the press absolutely can not act like it's in the bag for TFG bc that could affect turnout. They had to make clear that it wasn't yet decided. But trying to pretend like it was this exciting cliffhanger was just weird.

This seems promising!
After 20 months of demands, obstruction and delay, the Turkish parliament voted Tuesday night in favor of Sweden joining NATO, clearing one of the final hurdles for a major expansion of the military alliance set in motion by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan still needs to sign the ratification document. Assuming he does, Hungary would be the last remaining holdout. Officials there have previously signaled that they would not, ultimately, stand in the way. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced, somewhat cryptically, that he had invited the Swedish prime minister to visit to “negotiate on Sweden’s NATO accession.” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson appeared to respond only to the Turkish vote, writing on X, formerly Twitter, “Today we are one step closer to becoming a full member of NATO.”

I was going to ask why Biden was a write-in but decided to look for myself instead and it just all seems silly.
Not voting. Voting is important.
But all the jockeying to be first and best and all the money spent.
I know it will never happen, but there should be one primary election day (federal holiday so people can vote) and one general election day (federal holiday so people can vote).

I would love a standard primary day. That way we can all vote for the same candidates without them dropping out before my state even gets a voice.
