So I'm not someone who makes threads over here.
But it's almost new years
What do you think 2024 is gonna bring in politics and current events? What do you hope happens next? What do you have your fingers crossed about? What do you dread?

I'll answer
What do you think 2024 is gonna bring in politics and current events? I think more people's and countries are gonna denounce the inhumanity in Israel continued attacks on Gaza strip. Not sure if it will actually change anything though.
What do you hope happens next? I hope more states ban Trump on the ballot. But then Supreme Court may have to weigh in and I dread that.
What do you have your fingers crossed about? Fingers crossed az Supreme Court decides that the pre-statehood territorial law banning all abortions cannot be enforced in what is now a state.
What do you dread? The election process ramp up and all the talking heads and political jabs and that Trump will be on the ballot in some states even if he's not really eligible to run as a stinking insurrectionist.

I cannot begin to guess what will happen in 2024.
I can tell you I am not looking forward to the election.

I'm worried about the election. Not just at the federal level, but across the board.
I don't trust SCOTUS.
I keep waiting for some state to attempt to keep POTUS off the ballot as retaliation for 45 being removed.

This board is gonna be really quiet as we all bury our heads in our hands and shake our heads at the state of things

I am dreading that this is an election year. I just…no. I want to bury my head in the sand. This. I am totally freaked out about the election and trying not to let that be the theme of the entire year. I think Nikki Hayley will win the NH and SC primaries and the unbelievably bored press corps will spend a week frantically making it a, "Could TFG actually have a real challenge on his hands" because GOD FORBID they do any self reflection on how they cover him or try to do better. I think deep fakes are going to be a huge problem at an ever increasing basis. I think Dems will take the House but lose the Senate. The 2024 map was already really rough and Kirsten and Joe made it worse. I am very concerned for Tester, Brown, and the MI seat being vacated by Stabenow. Vivek Ramaswamy will absolutely get a show on Fox or Newsmax. That was the actual goal. Ron Desanis should slink into the shadows in shame but I feel like he will team up with Elon Musk to do something weird. SCOTUS will rule in favor of gun nuts in Rahimi and it's going to be bad. I just.....I dread wgat that decision will mean for so many women. I think Ruben Gallego has a good chance of pulling off a win in Arizona. He is goimg to have to find a way to reach those Independents who are interested in Synema but Senator Blake Masters being the likely outcome of them voting for her is a compelling argument, and Gallego is a skilled campaigner and he knows Arizona. Mitch McConnell will retire. He will oversee the flipping of the Senate and then announce his retirement. Someone is goimg to give George Santos a reality show. A Lauren Boebert sex tape will come out. There is way too much seismic activity lately, I am concerned that a major earthquake is coming somewhere in the world. I also think labor is having a moment and we will see more strikes/unionizing in the new year. The Taylor Travis thing will blow up shortly after the Super Bowl. And Michigan will win the national championship.

Making my point for me, apparently my IL's felt a tiny earthquake at their house yesterday. In Michigan.

I feel oddly at ease though my biggest concern is Biden's health in general. If he's up against TFG Biden will win. If Nikki Haley somehow pulls off the biggest upset in the world, she will.
The general conservative public and rank and file are getting bored of MAGA politics and their embarrassing year. Johnson will either get ousted or step down. McCarthy will get a show.
I think it would be delicious if boebert still lost even flipping districts. I think glusenkamp perez will get at least one more term turning WA03 reliably purple and giving disillusioned former Republicans a potential inroad to the big tent.
I think many are finally (FINALLY) waking up to the power of local politics and labor and angry liberal moms will wrest school boards/counties back from the brink.
I think climate change is so significant we'll actually have to stop avoiding it and it will become a more bipartisan issue. Though I think the shine of electric cars will wear off due to some dire issues.
I think congress will continue to be an embarrassment and while I think SCOTUS will continue to destroy their reputation, I think we also might get some positive surprises.
And I truly truly believe if we can make it to 2025 with our democracy still intact, we will start to come out the other side of this nightmare. It's been a rough couple decades and we aren't out of the woods yet but given millennial political and economic power and the current ghouls all...aging out...we may see a major sea change if we can just hang on.
I hope the current wars end and no new ones start but I'm dubious on that front.

I'm so nervous for the election. I get anxious just thinking about it. I will likely have many bow outs from politics this year to preserve my own sanity and mental health.
I'm also nervous about the climate change going on. The earthquakes and super storms like the crazy hurricanes and tornadoes and everything, it all feels like it's getting out of control.
SCOTUS scares the shit out of me. They're going to make some ruling that will have major negative implications.
One thing I do feel good about is Gen Z all coming to voting age. Having grown up with unfettered access to social platforms and the Internet, they are in the know, they don't put up with shit, and they generally are very socially liberal. I need them to, unfortunately, help pull us out of this shit sandwich we've built ourselves into. I would also like to see more millennials running for office and bringing the average age down. It would be nice if the people making the laws would actually be young enough to live long enough to feel and experience the repercussions of their decisions.

I am pumped that my daughter and her friends turn 18 this year. The conservative ones of them are more liberal than I am. We desperately need Gen Z and their votes.
That’s the only bright spot I’ve got. I am not ready or looking forward to the chaos of an election year. My mental health is in a bad place right now; I am limiting exposure for my sanity.

My son turn 18 in November 2024, like days before the election. I’m not ready for that part, but I at least know the way her will vote. So now we need to get him all set.

I am not looking forward to the shenanigans we'll surely experience this year In hopefully positive mental health news we are getting a kitten. We pick her up Tues 😍 She has one eye (the other was infected when she was rescued and had to be removed) and we're planning on naming her Calypso after the Greek goddess that trapped Odysseus. Even MH who is not really a pet person (and also allergic to cats) was immediately enamored Attachments:

Any interest in starting a 2024 Bingo thread? We could list out 10-20 things we think will happen in 2024 and see who’s the closest next December 31?
I tried to find a free bingo card generator but they all were highly sketchy.

mrsweasley, I want to smoosh her face! She's super cute. I always love looking at rescue kitties and dreaming of adopting another. But we already have two. And DD1 will reach our set "old enough for your own pet" age this year and plans on getting another.

FFSC I'm not comfortable saying I'm going totally alcohol free until 2025 because if a R is elected in November I reserve the right to drink my face off. Ugh. FUCK the Electoral college.
