Fuck. I'm sorry. I hate these brinkmanship games that don't affect the ones playing them.

Pretty sure the country will be more pissed about the shutdown. This is ridiculous.

I have no doubt we do have some dumb spending. But it’s also like kind of not noticeable from the average citizens pov. Like we get shit here in this country. No health care, no food, bad infrastructure….So I don’t think the jury is going to rule in their favor on that point.

Hunter indicted on gun charges today. huh? Please explain if anyone can. But like isn't the GOP the guns on parade. Are they throwing spaghetti??? Facts: Hunter lied on one of the forms he was required to fill out when he purchased the gun-about not being under the influence of substances, which he was and then possessed the gun when he was using illegal substances, also against the law . So on the face the charges make sense. In everyday life it’s rarely a stand alone charge, was potentially included as part of his failed plea deal’s immunity provision (his defense) and the judge that blew up the plea in the first place was a Trump appointee along with a question of whether the law he’s charged with violating is even constitutional. Clearly something else is at play but It’s certainly a sticky wicket.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of it is that this special counsel was appointed to find anything and with all the pressure he was getting from the GQP (even though he was supposed to be independent to avoid that pressure), this was the only thing he thought he had a chance of sticking. Or maybe I'm being a bit too tinfoil-y.

Ugh. My DH is DoD and they had a meeting yesterday about likely being furloughed at the end of the month.

Eta: the blue check is currently back, unsure when it was reinstated (guessing they'll try to claim mistake or something)

I’m pretty pro union (H belongs to one) but asking for a 40% pay increase while asking to reduce the number of hours you work seems pretty counterintuitive.

When your company is making record billions in profits the workers want more. Always the first ask is big and silly so subsequent asks seem reasonable.

I’m not against the higher wages at all, but if you know chances of getting that working your existing hours are slim, I guess I would want the wages to be increased at existing hours and negotiate the next time on a reduced work schedule not negotiate for both at the same time.

I always knew uaw as united auto workers until they supported student workers at calif schools like berkley on strike.
They are International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. Student workers/grad students etc belong to something like Coalition of Academic Student Employees. So the student workers union at many universities are part of UAW.
That reassures me as mom of a 23 yr old 3rd year grad student possibly going on strike for better conditions (like no raise in psy rate since 2010) that with uaw behind them if they have grown ups from uaw bargaining with them. It's not just a bunch of 20 to 26 year old gone amuck. Lol
If they go on strike he'd get strike pay from union of $500 a week which is more than he's paid now lol

It's not just a bunch of 20 to 26 year old gone amuck. Lol I worked for the Steelworkers Union for quite some time. Same thing for them. They represent college adjunct professors, nurses, glass workers, oil workers, pharmacists. Unions have been working for the last 10 years to expand and rebrand themselves.

After starting unionizing and bringing up topics that burden the grad students and other student workers is food insecurities.
For most students one 2 week paycheck goes to live somewhere even on campus is $$$ and the other 2 week paycheck is everything else. transportation utilities, food. Most of the student workers go to food banks maybe qualify for food stamps if they are a resident.
So to help out some departments started food pantries where the students could find something to ear. My son and his coworkers divided up the physics dept food pantry 5 lb bag of potatoes lol.

Did anyone else listen to the closing argument from Ken Paxton’s defense attorney? He managed to blame Biden, the Bush family, make fun of a man for crying on the stand, and declare that this is a partisan issue within the Republican Party while making his theatrical case.

Ugh. My DH is DoD and they had a meeting yesterday about likely being furloughed at the end of the month. FX it doesn't happen! I think even if we get a government shutdown, there is a chance the DOD bill gets passed. I hope so, for you all! We are definitely preparing for a shutdown in our house. The nice thing about me going back to work is that we will at least have my income if things go south.

The nice thing about me going back to work is that we will at least have my income if things go south. My org is funded slightly differently, so as long as we have funds, we’ll stay open and operational even if the gov is shutdown- right now it looks like we can make it to January if the DOD bill doesn’t pass- if longer than that, then 😬 just praying it doesn’t go on like last time! Of course with the gov shut down, money isn’t coming in and doing our jobs becomes difficult, but I know I’m in a lucky position comparatively. FX for everyone!
