Seriously, could we get to a place where a person summoned for jury duty could sue for/use the defense of, "I was afraid to serve on a jury/grand jury?"

We just got an ask from our principal to help support 4 new international teachers to our school (one of which is DD1’s new PM teacher). They are in temporary housing and are asking for donations of sliver ware, linens, cleaning supplies etc like these teachers are refugees or something. They have a month to go still til their first paycheck. Just like, fuck man. How is this education these days? Can’t we do better? Why are these new teachers being put in this position?

That's terrible on multiple levels. We should want the people teaching our children to be comfortable and supported by the world around them and be able to live in the community they support. We should not require them to provide free labor as they set up their classroom and learning space.

That's horrible. When I got my first teaching job, I didn't realize until my orientation two days before school started, that I wouldn't get my first paycheck till Sept 25 even though the first day of school was like Aug 15. We were only paid once a month then. Thankfully, I was living with my parents that year or idk how I would've done it.

We start workdays mid-August, but get a full paycheck the last day out of the month as they "pre-pay" us for our time in June. I guess you have to pay it back if you quit mid-year?? But yeah, we still get paid once a month (and have no option to spread our 10 checks over 12 months in our district). It's all we know, so we pay all bills at the beginning of the month. Our 2 teacher house is very ready for August paychecks. May 31 was a loooooong time ago.

Sounds about right! Welcome to America! But seriously, I hope your school community is able to rally around them so they feel very welcomed. Our state legislature still has not passed the next budget so we don't get our step raises until then. I really feel for all the bus drivers and IAs who really deserve bigger paychecks. We are supposed to get some kind of raises, but they like to screw over the 15+ years of experience crowd. What was being floated around came down to a $20/month increase for those of us with 15+ years, which both H and I are. Medicaid expansion is also finally supposed to happen here, but I mean they're in no hurry to actually help their constituents. BUT, they were able to come back in session this week to override a bunch of the govenor's vetoes because hey deciding to be hateful, soulless dicks is a no-brainer! We now have various anti-trans laws on the books and have made it easier for charter schools to do whatever the fuck they want. The proposed budget also wants to give $300 MILLION more dollars to our private school voucher fund. So yeah, it's been a shitty summer for public education here. But it's all part of their plan, and we're so fucking gerrymandered it seems impossible to get them out.

Yeah I moved here at the end of July my first year teaching, started PD August 10, but didn't get paid until September 1. And I had a broken ankle that summer and couldn't work, so I had to borrow money from my parents to buy groceries and such for a couple of weeks. Part of the problem was that moving is expensive and that plus security deposit on an apartment ate up so much of my savings.

Our community is typically extremely generous and I know the PTA and others are working on it, just hate that this is the way.

My mom had to renew her driver's license yesterday. It had been 8 years. She was excited to tell me that she switched her political affiliation to democrat from republican. ❤️

Quick FYai that yesterday's the Daily is an amazing piece on the Lahaina fire and one survivor's story but it is harrowing, so tread with care if you aren't in a good place mentally.
I am currently in a good place and I bawled.

elle holy fucking shit. I don't even know what to say about that. Definitely no conflict of interest. Oh and his wife also received payments from the anti-aborttion group leading the case. Trump Judge’s Anti-Abortion Ruling Followed Payments From Group Leading Case The conservative group arguing the abortion pill case has made frequent payments to the spouse of James Ho, who just helped threaten access to the medicine.
