The top shelf of a closet with a trigger lock is what the mom has said. Given everything we know, this is also woefully inadequate. Trigger locks can be the most accessible and affordable (or sometimes even free) gun locks so I don't want to downplay their importance as a tool to fight gun violence. But with a child in the home, they really, really should have had their firearms in a safe. Especially this child.

I also just can’t believe there are admin out there that wouldn’t take it seriously when told that a student might have a gun on them. Like…in the world we live in today in America, you just let this slide and not even try to find out what is going on with the kid?! I can’t wrap my head around it. The admin's response was heinous. Especially the "his pockets are too small to hold a gun" part when they didn't find a gun in the backpack and a staff member asked that the student be searched. Like truly, truly did the least despite multiple credible staff and student concerns.

I have a 6 year old, and he told another kid that he wanted to hurt him as a joke (obviously it is not funny, it's been dealt with, he doesn't have major behavioral concerns etc etc) a week ago and I had a phone call from the Dean of students within an hour and he had to meet with the kid and the Dean to reach a resolution. And that was just a very bad joke. The disparity in how schools handle these threads is astounding.

She said jokingly, not realizing the severity of her comment about a gun to another student and I had a phone call from the principal immediately. They grilled me about guns in the house and if they were locked, etc. I mean they took it so seriously.

That was also the third shooting on a school campus in that district in 2.5 years.

This is probably a dumb question but there aren’t laws about how guns have to be stored, correct? These exist mostly on a state by state basis, but states that enact secure storage laws tend to see decreases in gun violence and gun suicide.

Not going to quote bc I know that this poster doesn't share this belief, but keeping a firearm unsecured bc you think you need immediate access to it for self defense may actually make you less safe. Unsecured guns are at risk of theft, and stolen guns are often illegally trafficked and are more likely to be used in violent crimes than purchaser-owned guns.

. Not surprised. But glad it's being talked about. 'Barr Pressed Durham to Find Flaws in the Russia Investigation. It Didn’t Go Well. The review by John Durham at one point veered into a criminal investigation related to Donald Trump himself, even as it failed to find wrongdoing in the origins of the Russia inquiry. Mr. Barr and Mr. Durham never disclosed that their inquiry expanded in the fall of 2019, based on a tip from Italian officials, to include a criminal investigation into suspicious financial dealings related to Mr. Trump. The specifics of the tip and how they handled the investigation remain unclear, but Mr. Durham brought no charges over it. Mr. Durham used Russian intelligence memos — suspected by other U.S. officials of containing disinformation — to gain access to emails of an aide to George Soros, the financier and philanthropist who is a favorite target of the American right and Russian state media. Mr. Durham used grand jury powers to keep pursuing the emails even after a judge twice rejected his request for access to them. The emails yielded no evidence that Mr. Durham has cited in any case he pursued.' I will entertain not one single word about the 'dod.gy do.ss.ier' any longer. Fucking Bill Barr. Barr Pressed Durham to Find Flaws in the Russia Investigation. It Didn’t Go Well. nyti.ms/3XEpJ2xETA I'm out of gift articles for the month but here's a gift link from the coauthor

From the state 49th in gun laws and 4th in suicide I can say that when students tried to bring a nonbinding resolution to the floor regarding storage they were shut down. So common sense isn’t common

The parents put out a statement saying their gun(s?) is always in a secure place where the child has no access. So...yeah. I believe that is part of the investigation though, but nothing else has come out yet. So many failure points here. I just question why anyone would have guns in the home at all given what they are going through with their child. But I’m so far on the no guns ever spectrum that I just have to shut down my thoughts there. I’m not no gun ever, but I’m very much no gun in this situation and lock them all up all the time. This was preventable.

I like Adam and Katie, and I live very far from California, they don't need to send me so many emails. I just got one from Porter that seems very pointed after Schiff's announcement and I don't like it.

That Senator Feinstein resigns early and Newsom appoints someone and then we are all happy. I know people want to vote and not have the governor appoint but it’s already too much drama for me.

I love when pundits say "voters are smart" and then five seconds later are like, "After the commercial, we'll introduce you to the man who shot himself in the foot because he tried to pose on a live alligator for an instagram photo. The alligator ate his wife, who was holding the camera"

Didn't she already say she won't retire early and won't make a determination about running until 2024? 😬 But yes, early retirement would really be helpful right about now.
