I did like Henry Golding in a not squeaky clean role.

Ugh sorry to hear that sifl. It's not a good feeling when your spouse just doesn't get it.

My first and only baby is 4 and starting preschool. The preschool is full day at the elementary school and it is a shared classroom with the Kinder kids. Is it weird for me to take off work for her first day? So I can drop her off and pick her up and be available if she's scared or something?

fatpony, who cares about weird? I like to do drop off and pick up on the first day of school too. If she doesn't need you, you would have a whole day to yourself! I see no downside in this.

fatpony, if you have the time, take it. It's a hard transition for you and her both. Do what you need to do!

fatpony I always take the day off and usually have a back to school brunch with other parents. This year, I’ll be going to school with DS2 as the school nurse!

fatpony I always take the day off just in case. Get breakfast somewhere new, go shopping. It is mainly because I worry he will need me but is usually just an enjoyable day.

Normalize taking any day off you want! And hopefully not needing to pick up your DD and enjoying the milestone day.

fatpony, if you want to take the day off, you should take the day off! I would just prepare yourself that IME public school teachers - even those for the combined pre-K/K classes - are not going to be reaching out to you during the day. You won't hear anything if you're waiting around at home, so find something fun to do! This was the biggest adjustment for me going from daycare preschool to a big district public school pre-K. No daily reports about how their day went, no texts from the DCP with funny pictures. For awhile it felt like a black hole of information, but I got used to it. Obviously I could email the teacher (who we loved) about any concerns, but the long and short of what I knew about how any given day went was a "fine" from my kid.

We also drop-off on first days but just do whatever the normal end-of-day transportation situation is because my kids would forever say "but you picked me up the first day..." So we just start the way we intend to go on. And it's easier for the staff to do what's on the transpo schedule.

That was one of the biggest adjustments for me this last year with kindergarten. His teacher would send a preview of each week via email to everyone, but otherwise just trying to get him to tell me what he did, which, not the most enthusiastic about recapping his day lol. I’m going to enjoy the updates from daycare while I can with the twins haha.

I have loved all of my kids' teachers so far and they've all been great about responding to my emails after school. But I can't think of one time that I've gotten a call or email from them about something during the day. Even if a kid needs to go home sick, it's the office/nurse who calls.

And I think all preK/K teachers use the same sentences about the first week(s) in their class emails:
"We are learning classroom routines, using our listening ears and working on our calm bodies."
ETA It sounds like I’m making fun but God bless the educators.

richard, she's never been to daycare and ahs only attended 2.5 hour programs 3x a week, with nearly no communication because public schools. So I'm not expecting updates but for me the emergency is she's freaking out so much she pukes from crying, that sort of thing. But yeah, I'd like to at least send her off on her school bus and be there to meet her too.
