Ok, what are your kids currently working on in math?
I feel like Cadence staying home last year has made her fall behind. I'm debating on putting her in a math program to help her out (basically tutoring, but getting her up to speed and ahead). I emailed her teacher and finally heard back, but she basically said flash cards and some game program that is on their ipads would help.
I asked Cadence last night about how math is going and she said bad because she is always needing or asking for help. This alone tells me to get her enrolled in the program.
Numbers: she confuses double digit numbers (20 is 12, 30 is 13, etc.)
Adding: she's still using her fingers to add, although I have noticed recently the lower numbers she is starting to have memorized.
Subtracting: she will add. I remind her that the total can't be bigger than the first number because you are taking away. She agrees, says she gets it, then proceeds to do the same on the next problem.
Counting by 2, 5, 10...she won't unless you start it off, like she doesn't know how to start
Fact Families: she knows where the numbers go (for the most part), but if you then give her an addition or subtraction problem with that same family, she doesn't correlate it with what shes just done. Like 3, 4, & 7. 3+4=7, 4+3 = 7, 7-3 = 4, 7-4 = 3. If you then say what is 3 + 4? She will add it on her fingers. Although she has started hiding her fingers so I can't see them, but I know she is still using them.
I just want her to be up to speed and I know she isn't. And her teacher is....pretty useless, everyone I've talked to about her agrees.
We do have flashcards, games using dice helps so we've been playing those, we have place value bingo, which she enjoys. Her teacher basically said try flashcards and this game app they have on their school ipads. We do those things, I don't think it's helping.

S loves math so we do a lot of math games. Math war (card game war but you play with 2 cards and they have to add the 2 to see who wins - all face cards are 10 - I make him do the math and tell me who wins) khan academy or Prodigy game on the computer - he loved that last year, we had access through a teacher friend, not sure how much it would cost, but it's basically like a video game and you do math to beat characters We do a lot of math quizzes in the car. Even if she's using her fingers, it's still practice. Money - have her count her money and figure out how much it is. Or do little math problems with money. Like if you do X every day I will give you $.25 each day. How many days till you have $Y to buy an ice cream that cost $30 or something similar like that. color by numbers worksheets - I found a bunch on line like thisGood luck!!

As a former math teacher, get the help now if you have the time/money to do it. 2Nd grade math really just solidifies first grade math but 3rd grade math is hard. Help her with the small stuff now.

Evie's math homework is killing me. It's common core and so difficult for me on some things. I've had to ask my teacher friend to confirm I'm not doing it wrong! She also does word problems, carrying the 1 in two digit subtraction problems. If you youtube 2nd grade math, that might help. I've found some of the exact worksheets Evie brings home, are the youtube examples.
She's currently working on adding coins.

I've heard that Beast Academy is a good math tool for any student who either wants to enrich or needs some help. Josie's class is focused on addition and subtraction, but I often see challenge sections of her homework/school work where she is able to include different ways to solve the problems using multiplication and division. Also, her school has a math interventionalist. Maybe check to see if C's school does as well.

I agree to get the help now because this will be the foundation for everything else. Will it be once a week tutoring or more?
We are supposed to be doing math facts at home daily- she sent home cut out flash cards for us to practice- and we don’t. I used to do them twice a week and then got lazy. M has been doing math facts since last year and knows most of them. Beginning of the year he would get stumped on problems with 9. Don’t know why, but he would always have to think a bit longer on those. They have weekly tests where they have to answer 50 facts. (numbers 1-15) In order to be deemed proficient they have to get all 50 right 4 weeks in a row. I don’t think M had done that yet. He kills me because it will come back with 1 wrong and he knows the answer but I think he is just going fast. I’m not sure if it’s a timed test. He has been getting all 50 the last maybe 2 times, so I’ll see if he can keep his streak going.
I’ve tried to get M to use his fingers when he isn’t sure and he just doesn’t know how or refuses to, even when I show him.
He loves math and has been teaching himself multiplication. I think Mh has helped him some. I think he has all of his 2s and some of his 3s down.

His flash cards for home look like this. You cover up one number and ask what’s x +/- y? Maybe it will be helpful if you start with 1 family of numbers and focus on just those for a week. Instead of doing a lot of different ones at once, she may remember with a small focus group done every day. Like 2+2, 2+3, 2+4, and on. Repetition is what will help her. In the car just say- ok let’s count by 2’s, let’s count by 5s, and eventually she will remember from the repetition daily.

C has to do 5 minutes of math facts in Freckle nightly. We usually do a block of time over the weekend though. He probably learned the most math by counting his "fat stacks" of cash as he calls them. It made it easier for me to help him understand and since he really wants to know how much he has, he pays attention. Math has been easier for him than reading but maybe a reading technique we used will work for her. We would play football and before we would throw the ball he would have to get the word on the flashcard right. Since sports may not be her thing you could probably find a way to do this with dance or another game.
I agree with getting help now. I hate seeing C struggle with ELA so I am sure this is hard for you.

I would see about a tutor/program through the school. Especially since what you've been doing with her at home doesn't seem to be showing improvement. I'm sorry her teacher isn't responsive, but I agree it's a critical time to make sure she has the foundations. 3rd grade math is no joke and they move quickly from there. M is in 4th grade and they are already multiplying fractions.
Good luck.

Could you find out what program they are using for math and find supplemental things for it? I did that for L this year.

chrisy01, I have access to all of their school apps, the only ones she wants to do are obviously the games because she knows how to manipulate them into giving her easier problems....you get so many wrong and they go down a level to make it easier. Girl is smart with these damn computer programs. I told you about her and her friend downloading and figuring out a movie making app that they started doing in class instead of their work? Yeah, teacher didn't seem to notice or care. I had a talk with Cadence last night about how we need to prioritize school and homework first and the fun things like tablet time and playing with her toys are only options when homework is done. This was after another nightmare session of her being too tired to get her seesaw assignments done and flipping out, tears, yelling, etc. But, after I got her calm and centered we were able to talk it out and she understands she has to do that stuff first so that she isn't so tired while doing it. She has been doing a color by number app on her personal tablet that she really enjoys, so I found some color by sum worksheets that she might like. I'll work more with the flashcards and told her we would take it back to square one if we needed to and work our way up. I understand the math, I love math, I just think she needs someone to go slower one-on-one back to the first grade stuff that she was forced to learn virtually last year. We did it with writing, so I'll just have to do it with math as well. The program I was looking at would likely force her to quit riding lessons because of cost, so that's not an option. I'm going to try and reach out to her favorite substitute teacher and see if maybe she does any tutoring on the side.
