Matt Walsh is as bad as Elizabeth Bartholet, just in the opposite direction. “Public school ‘science’ teaches girls have penises”?! I actually wouldn’t mind more oversight. I think VA’s system is pretty good except that no one has actually laid eyes on my children. I’ve spoken to the school system several times though. I would love to see more homeschool liaisons being more active in public schools. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with HSLDA and can see some of Bartholet’s points. Are you a homeschool parent, scottcool? Welcome!

My older son is a “public school dropout” and my younger has never been. There were many things I loved about PS, but it was hard on my son when it was combined with being a military brat and immune compromised. Sometimes I wish that I’d known before they were school aged that this was going to be our choice though... maybe planning earlier would have helped with the feeling that I’m always catching up instead of getting ahead!

I would not mind if homeschoolers were required to submit an annual statement from a legitimate medical doctor certifying that the doctor examined the child - school physical style. I do find it confusing when states like Nebraska mandate that parents must teach X number of hours but do not verify the homeschool records. Why mandate the hourly requirement in the first place then as the only ones that is burdening is the law abiding homeschooler? We’re supposed to have vaccine records, but the school board doesn’t actually require us to turn it in. Discussing which doctors in the area wouldn’t turn a HSer in for cheating was the way I found out our favorite HS group was anti-vax. I would support yearly physical legislation. Part of what I find frustrating about HSLDA is that they’re so supportive of the “fringe” HS families that the “normal” just trying to find the best solution HS families get left out.

Im trying to get ahead of the game! The city I work for has a large sports complex which also offers a home school PE. My big draw back on home schooling was the children being able to socialize but now-a-days there is a ton of options. Thank you
