JJ made a movie for the fanboys. It fixed basically everything I remember them complaining about from TLJ. And the boys in front of me ate up all that stuff so I think it worked, in that respect. Left me pretty hollow as a TLJ fan though. Things I liked: -I liked the fight scenes where Rey and kylo were in two different places but perfectly physically interacting with each other. -I liked the water planet, and the fight at the water planet -I liked that Finn met other storm troopers and his force powers were addressed. I wish he had a little more to do though.
How lame were the knights of ren??? I laughed every time they were on screen. The fetch quest beginning and repeated death fakeouts were lame and annoying. I also got annoyed with three back to back scenes of old mentors giving young counterparts advice. I’m glad kylo got redeemed but was sad he died. I knew JJ wasn’t going to let Rey stand as a nobody, but I still roles my eyes hard at the “reveal”.

I will preface this by saying: 1. I am in so deep with SW that they could film shit on a plate and I'd watch it. 2. I like cheesy bad movies. I find them hilarious and go out of my way to watch them. 3. I went in with really low expectations and just hoped for a better movie than episode 2, but I can see how so many people are going to HAAAAAATEEEEEEE it. The guy next to me was visibly annoyed with most of the movie, which made it even more funny to me. 4. I was mostly annoyed with the half fucking hour of previews before the damn movie, then with anything in the movie itself. I actually really liked it. But it was so bad. Like so cheesy bad. It started with the scroll when I read the words "Supreme Leader Kylo Ren" I burst out laughing and whispered to MH that this would be a shit show and it was. MH and I were rolling the entire time. The planet name that rhymed with testicle. The "wayfinder" that literally finds the way. Come the fuck on. DEAD! -I really enjoyed the second half. I love what they did with Kylo/Ben. LOVED it. I'm glad he figured his shit out on his own and it was his mom's love that was the final push. - theseaword, I felt that the repeated old mentors were a huge goodbye to the fans, not necessarily to the characters on screen. The fans needed it and sure have it while I'm in the corner making my Rey and Kylo dolls kiss. -I fucking hate Sheev with the power of 1000 suns and I repeatedly wanted to punch him in his stupid fucking face. -The big reveal was laughable. Like beyond laughable. But I went with it because at this point sure, why not. It's Star Wars and they've done the most ludicrous story and plot lines before (midichlorians and the origins of the clone troopers to name a couple). The guy next to me yelled "that's not even possible" and well I lost it. (If anyone wants to talk about the big reveal further I'd be really interested in doing so. The only thing close in canon that I've read about is Gallius Rax and well that fucker died but the whole kid on Jakku thing is really interesting and I see possibilities.) - The thing with Hux was the best. I'm mad MH figured it out before me. In fact I was in complete denial because I've been on the Hux is going to start a coup thing for forever. I fucking love how quick that shit ended. HAHAHAHAHAHA like no, you aren't important at fucking all. - I would have liked to have seen more Rose and I'm hoping her lack of scenes wasn't a direct result of the intense fanboy harassment from the last movie. - I like how they made Leia's death both important to the story but didn't detract at all from what was happening in the main scene. - I love old crotchety Luke forever and ever Amen. - The knights of Ren were very background and pretty lame. I mean I don't think they should have been included in the entire storyline in the first place. They went nowhere. It's like they tried to do what they did with the bounty hunters in episode 5 but failed miserably. -Because of how ludicrous the big reveal was, I'm erasing the fact that Ben died and they're either doing some ghost boning or he's actually alive. Because why the fuck not. Palpatine has not only a son but a granddaughter. Huzzah! Anything is possible. SW logic.

I’m glad it wasn’t boring. I think it was bad and cash grabby but it wasn’t boring. Like I would watch it again and be fine, unlike the prequels which I have no desire to watch again because they are boring ass movies in addition to all the stupidity. I just felt like JJ made this movie using a checklist. It feels like a checklist instead of a movie.

So when I watch them it's basically like a 2 plus hour continuous meme.

I thoughts parts were cheesy, but overall, I liked it and felt satisfied. I liked the humor of it. But I’m sort of like, general fanboy type when it comes to Star Wars, not an analytical fan, so fan service works on me. I like the way it was shot, sort of grainy and very earth toned when the human actors were on. It reminded me of watching the VHS tapes over and over growing up.
I’m not a huge fan of Adam Driver as an actor, or his character’s story line over this trilogy, so I didn’t feel a lot of emotion about him. I liked where they finally (finally after so much dragging out) took his character.
Palpatine’s auditorium of chanting, faceless underworld Sith seemed pretty silly. He was still creepy AF though.
Apparently there was a kiss between two women? I totally missed it!
I saw it with a mix of friends who are obsessive (like super obsessive) and one who is a new fan. I’m in between on that scale. I think the moment that got all of us was when Chewbacca broke down over Leia. Like, damn, Chewy. 😭

Bookshelves the kiss was at the very end when they were all celebrating the destruction of the star destroyers a la the return of the Jedi ending. It was like a half second though so if you blinked you missed it.

I just saw a headline this morning as I was running out the door and didn’t have time to follow up.

I need the Internet to go ahead and hurry up and make GIFs of everything that Poe said. And his “can I kiss you now” expression at the end. He does it for me.

I thought there could’ve been more character development of Poe and Finn and that lack of trust, with Finn not telling him what he knew.
I’m still not sure I understand what they were trying to do with Finn’s character. They made him less bumbling this time, thank God. But like, when Rey is fighting Kylo on the water ship, and his instinct is, “I’m gonna run up behind her at this crucial time and scream her name and distract her!” My dude, why? He’s a good actor, give the guy something to work with.

Bookshelves, re palpatine's "audience" it was silly, but I think it perfectly fit in with his character. He's obsessed with himself so the fact that he had a bunch of hooded representations of sith surrounding him at his culminating moment made sense. I was annoyed he did the whole "she puts the lotion on her skin" with regard to dictating her actions. Yeah, I get it reinforced he was snoke, but been there done that.

I am kinda annoyed at the Rey/Ben kiss. So unnecessary. They could have made their bond non-romantic and I think that would have meant more.
There was just SO MUCH; it felt rushed. Vast improvement over the prequels, but it is my least favorite of the new ones. That being said - I’ll definitely watch it again.

I think Rey and kylo being physically into each other was set up in TLJ. We had that masturbation imagery (sorry!) of his wet glove, the thigh squeeze during the battle against Snoke, their hand holding alone in that hut...I never read them as platonic. They had chemistry!

I really liked it. A lot of it was very satisfying and there were enough surprises to balance out what was very, very predictable. There was so much fan service but I’m a fan so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They really minimized Rose’s role which I don’t mind on a story-level but I was disappointed for the actress.

Everyone is all "they gave everything for the fans". Well Yes! Of course they did. The fans drive the franchise ($$$). why the fuck would they finish a 9 part series with a fuck you to the fans? That doesn't make sense. Especially when they hope to continue making media within the franchise and sell merchandise.

I was entertained.
Some parts were cheesy or predictable but I’m not mad about it.
Poe was smoking hot in this one. As discussed, his dickish dude behavior in TLJ made him totally unattractive.
I wasn’t really on the Rey and Ben ship but I kind of am now.

I wasn’t really on the Rey and Ben ship but I kind of am now. ALL ABOARD! TOOT TOOT! It moved way too fast and so much was based around "fixing" things from TLJ, but I had fun and am happy enough. Not having a completed story arc going into this new trilogy did a huge disservice to their overall quality and cohesion. It's a bummer, but hopefully Disney/the entertainment industry has learned their lesson going forward.

I'm lost. I don't see what it "fixed" from TLJ. The biggest complaints that I remember were: Reylo Cranky old Luke No Snoke origins Rey's parentage
Both Reylo and cranky Luke were canon in this movie. Snoke's origin was one line. The only thing they spent anytime on was her parentage and that's because Kylo shoved it down her throat. It's not like she spent the movie on a quest to find out who they were. And even then we are left with a million questions because what the ever loving fuck to Palpatine having a son AND a hidden granddaughter. They better write some books explaining this shit because until then this is the more laughable than the existence of midichlorians.
I do think they should have left her as noone and had the Reylo bond because they were equal parts light and dark in the force.
Anywho according to what I've seen on the internet the fanboys still hated it even with all the "fixes". The only thing holding the fandom together is baby Yoda this point.

And Rey being no one (and that random kid inspired by Luke at the end) were tied to that theme. But now Rey is a palpatine and a Jedi and we are sort of back to the force only belonging to the Jedi. Fanboys were also very anti hux and kylo as they weren’t traditional, intimidating villains like snoke. So now they bring in palpatine as the big bad, and replace hux with Pride, a very by the book imperial. That sort of thing.

I would have preferred Rey stay a no one (but with some tie to the resistance like her parents helped with some mission and hid her on the planet but didn’t make it back) BUT I don’t mind that her being a Palpatine means she *chose* the light (or became a grey Jedi based on her new saber) over the Sith she was born to be. Plus Finn showed signs of being force sensitive so there’s still potential for more random Jedis.
And Palpatine spent many years being a normal-ish person and a senator. I wouldn’t have put it past him to have a younger, but probably unhappy wife at home with a couple kids during the prequels. The timing is a little squishy, but it works.
One one hand I loved the kiss between Ben and Rey bc hot but on the other I’m annoyed that she finally found love only to have it lost. And then she moved to tatooine by herself?! I hope it was just to hide the lightsabers there, but I would have liked confirmation that she has a permanent community.
Unrelated, I can’t shake how sad Chewy was when Leia died. That got me right in the feels. I also cried like a baby when Lando showed up with back up.

I liked it overall. It had some weak points, but it was much better than The Last Jedi.
I know a lot of people thought it was predictable that Kylo Ren turned back to good, but I think there was no way they would have ended the series with Han and Leia’s son being evil!

I know it’s not you saying it, but again, why are people so dumb. Do they want a series of twists just to be shocking that make no sense in the context of the themes of the narrative? Redemption has been the defining ducking theme of SWs. If Ben stayed evil and died, what the fuck is the message there?

That sort of thing. but the Force doesn't just belong to the Jedi, because Finn is clearly Force sensitive. Some people think the jab Luke makes at himself when he catches the lightsaber she throws into the fire and makes a quip about a Jedi's weapon deserves respect, which was a reference to when he tossed his lightsaber away after she gave it back to him in TLJ (which offended a lot of fanboys, apparently). Some people see that as a jab at TLJ's characterization of Luke, but I see it as him owning up to how he behaved and by the end of TLJ, he realized throwing away the past and hiding from it was not the way.
