My DD is 3.5 and we read a ton of picture books daily but we've just recently started doing some chapter books as well. We do a chapter a night. We've read Beezus and Ramona and Charlotte's Web and now we need another book. I tried Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but she was not as interested, I think because the hero was a boy.
Any suggestions of easy chapter books to try from here? They need to be plot-driven or she loses interest. I'm wary to start a series of books (like Little House) because the later books are too advanced. I ordered Matilda but I think it might still be a touch too hard.

Magic Tree House books are good early chapter books. Anna Hibiscus and Judy Moody and Junior B Jones are also popular ones.
Let me try to remember others - I'll report back.

My girls loved the Notebook of Doom books. They are sort of like little kid X Files books with really punny villains (a forkupine for example). They have a good sense of humor and chapters that aren't too long.

I'm going to order a Magic Tree House book. She'll like that it's a brother and sister. And I think I might actually have the Judy Moody books somewhere....pretty sure I have never gotten rid of a book.

Dd loves the great and the pain series from Judy Bloom I've never heard of this series. Judy Blume always just makes me think of passing a tattered copy of Forever around my group of friends in sixth grade. But again, My DD is really into any story with a brother and sister (sometimes she makes me add a little brother into picture books) so this is right up her alley.

I was going to suggest The Magic Treehouse books. My DS loves them. Also The Boxcar Children.

The Betsy-Tacy books. They are a series but you can read the first couple on their own.

Ooh I need this. We have been doing chapters from 5 minute spiderman stories and we're almost done the book. I have found DS really really thrives/bedtime is way easier with the chapter a night routine.Notebook of doom sounds fun.

It's boys, but DS loves the Superfudge books.
Flat Stanley was cute too, but again, boys.

The Mercy Watson books are shorter but definite favorites in our house. The Hamster Princess series is funny and longer (Princess Harriet Hamsterbone would rather fight ogrecats and cliff dive than behave like a "proper" princess).

I second Mercy Watson and will add anything by Kate DiCamillo. I also loved American Girl and started reading them/having them read to me around her age.

My kids loved them and they are much more tolerable than most to read.

The Secret World of Og by Pierre Berton. Lots of magic and rich imagery. The main characters are a group of male and female siblings.
The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White
