L will be 5 months in a week. Nurses at home, bottles at daycare (usually 3 oz every couple hours, but we’ve been trying to up it to 4 oz). He’s been verrryyy distracted while nursing for the past couple weeks, popping off to look around/talk/squirm/suck on his hands. We’ve been nursing in a quiet and dark room. He would usually eventually latch and eat well. Extra short sessions happened occasionally, but were definitely not the norm.
Over the past week, bedtime and MOTN nursings have been mostly the usual length (5-10 min), but the rest of the day he hardly nurses for more than 2 min. He’ll pull off, arch his back, and turn away.. or just pull off and start talking, squirming, or sucking on his hands. Not really fussy at first, but if I try to get him to nurse more he’ll get fussy. I’ve tried burping him and he does occasionally, but won’t nurse more after that. At daycare this past week, he’s been only taking .5-2 oz each time and they’ve said its been a struggle to get him to eat. Overall throughout the day, he doesn’t seem extra fussy, although he has seemed more tired than usual.
Over the past couple weeks, he’s also started biting me, clamping down and pulling his head back, or latching/unlatching repeatedly. No teeth yet, and I don’t really see any swelling or white spots. Lots of drooling though and chewing on anything he can get his hands on.
I’ve been pumping like usual at work, getting the same amount as always, so I don’t think it’s supply related. I haven’t eaten anything out of the ordinary. He’s not sick or stuffy. Still having regular wet and dirty diapers.
Is this a nursing strike? He’s not flat out refusing, but definitely taking very little. And he seems to be equally not interested in breast or bottle. He went from the 25th to the 10th percentile from 2 to 4 months. He has gained in the past couple weeks, but it’s minimal. I’m just worried about his weight gain. At his 4 month, pedi said to keep an eye on it and we’ll see how he’s gaining at his 6 month appt. I’m not sure how long I should let this play out to see if it’s just a phase. Any thoughts/suggestions?
